Tesla Model S, X with “Hardware 3” for Full Self-Driving now in production, inventory codes indicate


Tesla has begun producing Model X and Model S vehicles with the latest Autopilot hardware to support Full Self-Driving capabilities. Dubbed “HW3”, the new hardware is Tesla’s next iteration of its semi-autonomous driving-assist feature that includes Navigate on Autopilot, Advanced Summon, Auto Lane Change, Autopark, and the ability to respond to traffic lights.

Looking at the source code behind Tesla’s New Inventory site, we’re able to see that recently produced Model S and Model X with Autopilot have been given an “APH4” options code, signifying that these vehicles are equipped with the latest Full Self-Driving hardware. Tesla uses the option code sequence “APHx” to denote the type of Autopilot hardware installed in its vehicles. APH2 indicates HW2 and APH3 = HW2.5 (Autopilot 2.5). Thus, APH4 is HW3.

The tip comes to us from Tesla Info and Inventory, a web site which compiles inventory data for Tesla vehicles around the world, noted that internal vehicle “option codes” indicated a change from Hardware 2.5 to Hardware 3. The site pulls source data directly from Tesla’s car listing pages and analyzes the “config” data embedded in the HTML to determine this information.

This discovery aligns with the schedule for the HW3 installs previously set forth by Tesla CEO Elon Musk. Last October, Musk estimated a 6-month wait before the the new chips would be installed in all new production cars, meaning an April showing.

Musk has touted HW3 as the “world’s most advanced computer designed specifically” for the purpose of self-driving functionality, with Tesla holding a notable lead in the field overall. “If you add everyone else up combined, they’re probably 5% — I’m being generous — of the miles that Tesla has. And this difference is increasing,” Musk said in Tesla’s 2018 Q4 earnings call.

For vehicles without HW3 installed at the time of manufacture, Musk has stressed the simplicity of the upgrade process in Tesla’s 2018 Q2 earnings call. “We take out one computer and plug in the next. That’s it. All the connectors are compatible and you get an order of magnitude, more processing and you can run all the cameras at primary full resolution with the complex neural net.”

The simple upgrade to HW3 does require Tesla cars to have HW2 as the equipment needed for its functionality was included in those vehicles. The software uses an array of 8 cameras, 12 ultrasonic sensors, and a forward-facing radar paired with Tesla’s vision and neural net system.

The first features of the Full Self-Driving suite were included in the Version 9 software released in October. “Navigate on Autopilot”, an active guidance feature with Autosteer for highway driving (with driver supervision) came soon after with the release of HW2.5. Improvement in performance from software Version 8.1. to 9.0 was increased by about 400% in useful operations per second; however, the difference between V9.0 and HW3 will make a difference of 500-2000%, according to Musk. Tesla has been releasing iterative over-the-air updates over the last year in preparation for the coming HW3 and complete FSD capabilities.

The current iteration of Tesla’s FSD capabilities includes core highway navigation, autopark, and Summon for car retrieval in parking lots. Recognition of traffic signs and signals as well as city street driving are expected to be coming later this year.

Now that HW3 is on its way to current and future Tesla customers, Full Self-Driving certainly feels right around the corner. However, the biggest obstacle to full implementation still sits on the regulation side, a time-consuming yet necessary part of the consumer vehicle industry, especially when a company is handing over responsibility to a computer. Tesla’s Autopilot page still references full self-driving capabilities as something “in the future” that may happen after regulatory approval which “may take longer in some jurisdictions.”

Tesla’s dominance in the all-electric market will most likely work in its favor to overcome the legal hurdles in the way of autonomous driving. As sales continue to rise with the growing number of customers now able to meet more affordable price points, Tesla will keep accumulating useful data to hone its FSD software and make the case for its much-safer-than-humans capabilities. Other companies may have long been battling the same regulatory demons Tesla is now up against, but the electric car was also “killed off” prior to their very influential arrival on the market. In “Musk World”, there is improbable, but not often impossible.

Tesla’s Sentry Mode will feature location-based activation options, says Musk


Tesla CEO Elon Musk recently announced some new details for Sentry Mode, outlining the activation options of the newly released security feature. According to Musk, Tesla will be giving owners the choice to engage or disengage Sentry Mode depending on the vehicle’s location.

Taking cues from the Tesla community, Musk noted that Sentry Mode will have the following options: “Always,” “Exclude Home,” “Exclude Work,” “Exclude Saved Locations,” “Ask,” and “Off.” These options will make Sentry Mode far easier to use for electric car owners, especially since the feature required manual activation every time it was used when it was initially rolled out last month.

Based on Elon Musk’s tweet, Sentry Mode will give electric car owners the option of using location-based data to determine where the security feature should be activated. Such options will likely be appreciated by the Tesla community, considering that the company already utilizes location-based data for some of its vehicles’ features, including Smart Air Suspension for the Model S and Model X, and location-based auto folding mirrors for cars like the Model 3. With this system in place, Tesla owners need not worry that their vehicles will go full “Alarm” state while they are at home or at work.

Following reports of break-ins in the United States that appear to be specifically targeting the company’s electric cars, Elon Musk pledged to roll out a system that would help owners keep their vehicles safe. The result was Sentry Mode, a security system which uses the vehicles’ suite of sensors, lights, and speakers to potentially deter threats. Video feeds from the electric cars’ suite of cameras also allowed owners to take recordings of incidents around their vehicles.

Sentry Mode is a pretty robust security system that addresses a very serious issue. Nevertheless, Tesla has still managed to include some fun, pop culture references to the feature. Upon activation, Sentry Mode is represented by the glowing red “eye” of 2001: A Space Odyssey‘s AI villain, HAL 9000. A loud blast of classical music also greets would-be thieves once the security feature enters its “Alarm” state.

Several improvements have already been rolled out for Sentry Mode since it was released last month. Since its initial release, Sentry Mode has become more integrated with the Tesla mobile app. Footage recorded from the vehicles’ cameras could also be sent to Tesla for temporary backup.

Texas lawmaker doubles down against Tesla, accuses carmaker of violating ‘existing law’


Texas State Sen. Kelly Hancock (R-North Richland Hills) is doubling down on his statements against Tesla, noting in a recent statement to The Dallas Morning News that the electric car maker is actually in violation of existing law. Hancock claimed that his office was able to come to this conclusion after reaching out to the Department of Motor Vehicles.

The lawmaker further argued that S.B. 1415, which has been dubbed as the “anti-Tesla” bill, is simply intended to “reduce over-regulation of vehicle manufacturers in Texas.” Hancock also dismissed concerns that S.B. 1415 will prevent Tesla vehicles from being repaired and serviced within the state, adding that reports surrounding these reservations are “the definition of fake news.”

S.B. 1415 caught the Tesla community in Texas by surprise after language in the bill added “servicing” and “repairing” to the definition of dealership activities, preventing car manufacturers such as Tesla from performing essential maintenance on its vehicles in the state starting September 1. In a statement to The Dallas Morning News, Tesla noted that the bill would “leave Tesla drivers with very little recourse in terms of keeping their vehicles running safely in the state.”

Unlike traditional automakers, Tesla does not utilize dealerships, selling its cars and energy products through showrooms that are very similar to Apple Stores. Tesla states that it prefers to sell its vehicles directly to customers because dealerships don’t usually educate the public on the benefit and requirements of electric cars. This has resulted in Tesla being a target for the car dealership lobby in Texas, which has insisted that franchised dealerships benefit customers when it comes to service repairs and the car buying experience.

Despite this stalemate, Tesla has stated that its representatives met with Hancock’ staff recently in an attempt to make S.B. 1415 less threatening to the electric car maker’s business model. Hancock, for his part, argued that his communication with Tesla was an “attack” on his office. In a recent tweet, the Texas lawmaker added that Tesla “brought nothing to offer” when he met with the company’s representatives, resulting in no compromise being reached.

Teslarati has reached out to the office of Texas State Sen. Kelly Hancock regarding S.B. 1415 three times so far, though we are yet to receive a single response.

Tesla has been rapidly expanding its reach since the advent of the Model 3, and this is felt even in states like Texas, which are quite protective of its car dealerships. Amidst the Model 3’s ramp last year, North Texas residents registered nearly 3,000 new Tesla electric cars. The company also continues to expand its reach in the state, opening a new showroom at the Galleria Dallas earlier this year.

Tesla’s in-car web browsing experience to get a boost with Chromium


A recent announcement from Tesla CEO Elon Musk has teased that a faster, better in-car web browser will be rolled out to the company’s fleet of electric cars in the future. In a post on Twitter, Musk noted that Tesla’s in-car web browsers are “about to be upgraded to Chromium,” referring to the open-source relative of Google Chrome, arguably the most popular browser on the internet today.

Chromium and Google Chrome are practically joined at the hip. While it could easily be dubbed as the open-sourced sibling of Google Chrome, Chromium is also the project that generates the source code used by the popular web browser. Google kicked off the Chromium project the same time it launched the Chrome browser in 2008, and it has since evolved, thanks to input from individuals both from and outside the tech giant.

Computerworld dubs Chromium as the “ancestor of Chrome,” and in a way, this is accurate, since the latter has been augmented with proprietary code from Google. Chromium remains incredibly relevant until today, with an open source project dubbed Chromium OS being the foundation of Chrome OS, the operating system that powers Google’s ubiquitous Chromebooks.

Tesla’s electric cars are equipped with web browsers, though the user experience of the feature has mostly left much to be desired. Before improvements were rolled out last year, the in-car browsers in the Model S and Model X were next to useless, simply because they were just far too slow (a controlled test showed that it took 48.32 seconds before the in-car web browser loaded the official Tesla website).

Tesla eventually introduced updates last April to vehicles that are both equipped with older and newer Media Control Units (MCU), which improved users’ web experience. Yet, despite these updates, Tesla’s in-car browsers (including those in the Model 3) remain relatively slower compared to those found in devices such as smartphones and tablets.

The arrival of Chromium would most likely result in an improved web experience for Tesla owners, which will all but establish the company’s electric cars as among the most advanced tech devices in the world, bar none. There’s just something paradoxical about the Model S being one of the most technologically advanced machines on the road being relatively slow to load web pages, but with Chromium in the picture, this paradox will most certainly get addressed.

A fast, stable web browser will likely be a key feature for Tesla when it starts rolling out the functions of its Full Self-Driving suite. With drivers not actively operating the vehicle, activities such as web browsing will most definitely be prevalent for drivers and passengers alike. A browser that is worthy of Tesla’s tech will be key to this end.

Tesla Gigafactory 3 in China continues Phase 1 buildout after pile driving stage


Tesla’s Gigafactory 3 in China continues to be built in a rapid manner, with recent drone flyovers of the site suggesting that work on the facility’s first sections is well underway. Provided that construction does not slow down, it would not be surprising if Gigafactory 3 does get completed within Elon Musk’s ambitious timeframe.

Footage of the site gathered by 烏瓦 and shared on YouTube earlier this week revealed the absence of pile drivers, machines that are designed to help prepare the soil for the laying of foundations, in key areas of Gigafactory 3’s lot. With the pile driving stage being complete, the first phase of the project, which is expected to include to the buildout of a general assembly building, is able to continue.

From the air, it is evident that large sections of the 864,885-square meter lot have recently been paved with cement. Steel foundations, the first of which was inaugurated recently, are also being set up. There were even areas where metal scaffolding was being installed. Other sections of the expansive lot were abuzz with activity as well, with heavy machinery and human workers moving soil to make way for more construction.

In one part of the video, the channel’s host asked one of the workers in the site about the schedules being adopted for Gigafactory 3’s construction. According to the worker, the construction activities in the location continue overnight. A surveyor on the site also mentioned that the facility is being built like building blocks, which would allow Gigafactory 3 to be completed quickly.

Based on this recent footage, it seems undeniable that Gigafactory 3 is being built in a rapid manner. With China’s construction workforce fully mobilized, the progress in the facility’s buildout has been impressive. Shanghai official Chen Mingbo mentioned that Gigafactory 3’s initial construction would be completed by May earlier this month. Such a target is undoubtedly ambitious, but seeing the progress of the facility’s construction so far, it seems that the Shanghai official’s estimates might prove to be realistic.

Gigafactory 3 is expected to host the local production of the Model 3 and Model Y’s affordable variants. The facility is expected to incorporate both battery cell production and vehicle assembly, allowing Tesla to manufacture its electric cars efficiently for the Chinese market. During Gigafactory 3’s groundbreaking ceremony, Elon Musk noted that he expects the facility to start producing the Model 3 by the end of 2019.

Exclusive: Porsche’s electric heart beats in the Taycan’s Zuffenhausen factory


Beside the red-bricked walls of Porsche’s headquarters at Zuffenhausen, an electric transformation is taking place. It is a transformation that echoes back to its earliest days, despite the company’s pedigree with the internal combustion engine. Tall, modern-looking buildings sit side-by-side with older factories and shops that have literally witnessed history. The faint sounds of heavy machinery are audible in the distance, a reminder that work in the historic site is ongoing.

“We’re building a factory within a factory within a city with residences close by, hardly any space, and this in high speed,” says Porsche representative of the project David Tryggvason, lightly pointing out that the timeframe of the project is very Porsche-like: Sporty.

Porsche is actively engaged in a massive construction project in its Stuttgart-Zuffenhausen site, roughly 120 miles from Frankfurt, with the company running full throttle as it prepares for the production of the Taycan. The result of these efforts could only be described as a rebirth of sorts, since the company that started with an electric car is now pushing itself to re-embrace all-electric vehicles, perhaps just as intended by its founder, Ferdinand Porsche, more than a hundred years ago.

An electric transition

A lot is riding on the Porsche Taycan. During the company’s annual press conference, Porsche CEO Oliver Blume and Deputy Chairman of the Executive Board Lutz Meschke emphasized how all-electric vehicles like the Taycan and its lineup of hybrid cars are pertinent for the company’s future. In a statement, Meschke noted that by 2030, vehicles powered by an internal combustion engine would likely be the exception to the rule.

“One thing is clear: from 2030 onwards; there probably won’t be any vehicle model from Porsche without an electric variant. I actually presume that by 2025, we will have electrified significantly more than half of our entire model range. But the combustion engine will still be around in 2030. Our 911 will hopefully still be driving with them for a long time to come. Conventionally powered vehicles will at that point be the niche in our electric fleet,” he said.

Before it can produce a successful electric vehicle, Porsche needs to ensure that it has the facilities necessary to build a completely different type of car. The veteran automaker opted to construct several new facilities to accommodate the Taycan’s production, and it had to overcome numerous challenges to make the buildout possible. The Zuffenhausen site is a stone’s throw away from a residential neighborhood, and the site itself is split by a four-lane road. With space being scarce, Tryggvason notes that the company did the only thing it can do: it built up. Overall, building the Taycan is complex. Setting up the facility even more so. For the project manager, the challenges were worth it. “We believe in the product,” David said.

A high-stakes, collective effort

The company’s bet on the Taycan is evident in its investment for the vehicle and the actions of its own employees. Porsche is spending about 6 billion euros (around $6.81 billion) for the development of its electric mobility initiatives. Porsche Production 4.0, a campaign aimed at ushering in a new era of vehicle production, is also underway. Accelerating these developments is a deal that the carmaker struck with its employees, who agreed to forego a small part of their collective salary increase in exchange for their participation in the Taycan’s production and release.

David Tryggvason and Porsche Press Spokesman Jorg Walz later directed me to the roof of one of the new buildings, and I was able to get a pretty good view of the factory itself. They pointed out how the Taycan starts its life by having its electric motors, batteries, and axles assembled. The electric car’s body then gets put together, painted, and transported across a long conveyor system where it can go through final assembly and married to its electric drive unit.

A key to the successful production run of the Porsche Taycan is the company’s target of manufacturing the vehicle in a “smart, lean and green” manner. Examples of these include a flexi-line that uses automated guided vehicles for simpler assembly despite the expansive customization requests from Taycan buyers, optimizations in the use of resources and space, and an initiative to ensure that the entire production process of the all-electric car at Porsche’s Stuttgart-Zuffenhausen site is CO2-neutral. This is made possible through several programs such as the electrification of logistics vehicles, the use of waste heat in the paint shop, and a pilot trial that involves the adoption of nitrogen-absorbing facade surfaces, to name a few.

Race-bred batteries for a race-bred electric car

Not one to waste a rare opportunity to ask for details about the Taycan, I decided to ask a little about the electric car’s battery performance. Over the past year, several great electric vehicles were released by veteran carmakers such as Jaguar and Mercedes-Benz, but inasmuch as the machines themselves were impressive, their batteries left much to be desired. The I-PACE, for all its stunning interior and excellent design, is pretty much the electric equivalent of a gas guzzler. The Mercedes-Benz EQC seems to be the same.

Porsche uses pouch cells from LG Chem in the Taycan’s battery pack, which is expected to give the vehicle over 300 miles of range per charge under the NEDC standard. The company is aiming for ultra-fast 350 kW charging as well, thanks to its 800-volt technology, which was used first in Porsche’s LMP1 racecar 919 Hybrid. I asked how the Taycan’s battery holds up when charged continually with such a high rate of charge. Walz smiled and candidly stated “We’re very optimistic.”

After the annual press conference, I was able to sit in for an informal discussion of Porsche’s electrification with executive board member Detlev von Platen. The Porsche exec highlighted that the Taycan’s battery cells were closely developed by the company, thanks to its experience from its high-performance hybrid vehicles. Examples include the legendary Porsche 918 Spyder hypercar and the three-time Le Mans-winning Porsche 919 Hybrid racecar, both of which required some work in their batteries.

“So we’re absolutely involved, deeply involved, in the development of the (Taycan’s battery) cells and the technology behind it. We haven’t started last year with the Taycan. We have worked since a long time already on battery technology from motorsport. Our prototypes like the 919 Hybrid was electrified. So I would say, in general terms, that we have started to work on battery technology at least ten years now,” Von Platen candidly said.

I was reminded of David Tryggvason’s overview of the Taycan’s components a couple of days before, when he remarked that some of the Porsche personnel who worked for the 918 Spyder hypercar also worked in the development of the Taycan. Upon hearing Von Platen’s description of Porsche’s work with batteries, I couldn’t help but agree with his point. Porsche has produced several iconic vehicles in the past, and the majority of them are powered by the internal combustion engine. Despite this, it is difficult to argue that the best cars the company has ever produced, such as the 919 Hybrid, are imbued with electric propulsion at their core. Beneath the roaring engines of the vehicles were electric motors and batteries that ultimately unlocked the cars’ real potential.

From the past to the future

An engineer at heart, Ferdinand Porsche started with an electric car at the end of the 19th century. He later dipped his feet in hybrid propulsion, before going ahead and gaining mastery of the internal combustion engine. From this perspective, the development of the Taycan feels like a homage to the company’s roots, and this is a big reason why Porsche is dead serious about the vehicle. In what appears to be a gesture to prove this, the Taycan is being built on the company’s most historic site, and it will be produced alongside the 911, a vehicle that can only be dubbed as the quintessential Porsche.

As I grabbed my travel gear and scurried to the remaining shuttle that was awaiting my presence, I looked back at Porsche’s headquarters one last time. There in the dark sky stood a marvel of orderliness in this ever-changing world. It was a moment that can only to be described as surreal, when the past breathes new life into the future. Seconds later, as I buckled myself down on the shuttle seat and gazed into a disappearing Zuffenhausen site, the sounds of whirring machinery and vehicles rolling off the factory floor can be heard in the distance. Beneath this orchestra of sounds were the rhythmic thumps of heavy equipment that continued to work tirelessly to build Taycan’s upcoming production facilities.

I couldn’t help but imagine that the sounds were representative of the electric heartbeat of a carmaker, coming to life once more.

Tesla Model Y and Model 3 will both be able to tow: report


A recent report from Norwegian media has noted that Tesla will be releasing towing equipment not only for the Model Y but also for the Model 3. The information was reportedly related by Tesla’s chief designer Franz von Holzhausen himself, who confirmed that such equipment was indeed coming for the electric vehicles.

Immediately following the Model Y event last week, the Swedish magazine Elbilen briefly conversed with Franz after he stepped off the stage asking if the newly unveiled SUV will have a towbar. After the Tesla Chief Designer said yes, the publication followed up with a question about the Model 3’s towing equipment. Franz’s response was brief, only stating “soon,” before smiling and disappearing into the crowd.

The utilization of a towbar for the Model Y was teased by images and videos taken of the vehicle during its unveiling. Teslarati‘s images, as well as footage from owner-enthusiast Daerik on YouTube, showed that the all-electric crossover was fitted with an unmistakable rear cover plate for a tow hitch receiver. The Model Y’s cover is rather similar to the plate found in the larger, more expensive Model X, which is also capable of towing.

Elon Musk has mentioned an optional tow hitch for the electric sedan in the past, though updates about the feature have been scarce. Things became more interesting in late January, when the Tesla Owners Club Norway (TOCN) discovered references to the Model 3’s towing capabilities in the vehicle’s diagrams. Mentioned were electrical towing-related components including a Trailer Light Controller and a Trailer Light ECU.

Tesla’s electric cars are capable of producing a lot of torque off the line due to their electric motors, making them ideal for towing projects. This makes even vehicles like an RWD Model 3 capable of pulling some serious cargo, as shown in some DIY projects that have been shared online. It should be noted that Teslas that are actually rated to haul heavy loads like the Model X are on a whole different level, as the SUV has shown impressive feats of strength in the past. Beyond its rated 5,000 lb towing capacity, the Model X has pulled a semi-trailer across the snow, a literal passenger airplane, and 250,000 pounds of dirt straight from a Boring Company tunnel.

Tesla’s vehicle reliability makes way for as-needed service, no annual maintenance needed


Tesla will no longer be offering an extended maintenance plan in favor of specific service recommendations on an as-needed basis.

Having analyzed billions of miles of real-world driving data from its worldwide fleet of vehicles, combined with internal engineering studies on vehicle reliability, durability, and safety, the electric carmaker found that there was less of a need for customers to bring their vehicles in for annual service when, in many instances, the vehicle did not require maintenance like a traditional gasoline car would.

In place of an annual maintenance checklist, Tesla owners will only need to bring their cars in for service when there’s a service need on a specific component at a specific interval. This will enable cars to stay on roads for longer periods of time.

Along with reducing servicing requirements for Model S, Model 3, and Model X vehicles, this change will effectively end the purchase of optional 3 and 4-year Maintenance Plans.

The all-electric car maker originally recommended a multi-point inspection every 12 months or 12,500 miles, but long-term data has now demonstrated most of the items are unnecessary thanks to advantages to electric vehicles.

The annual scheduled maintenance previously recommended included a bumper to bumper, roof to wheel inspection. Vehicle logs and alerts were examined, consumables such as wiper blades, key fob batteries, and air filters were inspected, among other common vehicle inspection items.

Under Tesla’s maintenance recommendations, the following are now suggested:

  • Cabin Air Filter
  • High Efficiency Particulate Air (HEPA) Filter
  • Tire Rotation, Balance and Wheel Alignment
  • Brake Fluid Test
  • Air Conditioning Service
  • Winter Care

Updating manufacturer maintenance recommendations with the customer in mind are one of the ways Tesla has demonstrated its commitment to improving its service experience. Owners have noted areas needing improvement in the electric vehicle manufacturer’s service recently, although their vehicles are well-loved in general.

Tesla has taken note of this weak spot and has been rolling out initiatives to improve its customer experience including opening in-house body shops and live status updates while their vehicles are being serviced. Similarly, because all of Tesla’s vehicles are connected, vehicle service logs are used to troubleshoot and identify customer concerns before a car is brought in for service.

As the $35,000 Model 3 Standard Range continues its roll out and the coming Model Y expected to be even more popular drawing near, shoring up the service side of Tesla’s ownership experience is a step in the right direction. Eliminating unnecessary check ups could have a positive impact on customer wait time thanks to freer service center schedules; regardless, keeping customers in their cars rather than waiting to be inside them is a good place to be overall.

Tesla has brought back its popular Referral Program, this time with a revised structure that allows the company to provide exclusive awards while maintaining a cost-effective structure.

Citing customer enthusiasm as one of the reasons for bringing back the successful Customer Referral Program, which recently came to an end on February 2 after it became too expensive to maintain, the newly restructured incentive program will bring back free Supercharging and the next-generation Roadster as the grand prize. Additionally, Tesla will be offering a Founders Series Model Y as part of one of the exclusive awards. Both vehicles will be signed by CEO Elon Musk and Chief Designer Franz von Holzhausen.

“We’ve heard from our customers that the Referral Program was one of their favorite reasons to tell their friends about Tesla, so today, we’re introducing an all-new Referral Program to give customers another way to share what they love about their cars,” notes Tesla in its blog post for the new Customer Referral Program.

Existing Tesla owners who refer a friend to purchase a new Tesla will be given 1,000 miles of free Supercharging. The buyer will also receive the same benefit.

Contrary to the past Referral Program that ultimately became cost-prohibitive after being opened to Model 3 customers and giving away roughly 160 Founder Series Tesla Roadster, the new program will be offering prize winners a monthly and quarterly chance to win a vehicle as opposed to giving one away.

“Each referral also gives you a chance to win a Founder’s Series Model Y monthly and a Founder’s series Roadster supercar quarterly, both signed by Elon Musk and Franz von Holzhausen,” notes Tesla.

Tesla owners who already have free unlimited Supercharging will be given two chances to win with each referral.

Tesla analyst reaffirms bullish stance after impressive Fremont, Gigafactory 1 visit


Tesla shares (NASDAQ:TSLA) might be facing headwinds in the market recently due to concerns over the company’s performance in the first quarter and Elon Musk’s ongoing issues with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), but a Wall Street analyst has argued that the electric car maker’s operations are doing better than expected.

Wedbush analyst Dan Ives, together with his peer Strecker Backe, recently took a tour of Tesla’s Fremont plant in California and the company’s Gigafactory 1 in Nevada. By the end of their visit and analysis, the two analysts doubled down on their bull case, partly due to the progress that the company has made with its battery and electric vehicle production.

A visit to Tesla’s Fremont factory will not be complete without a tour of the infamous tent housing an assembly line for the Model 3. While the sprung structure has remained polarizing and a constant target of ridicule from Tesla’s critics, Ives noted that the tent-based assembly line is actually performing very well, with processes in the location being robust and streamlined. “It was jaw-dropping in how efficient that process has now become in the tent. This is not a company that’s slowing down production,” Ives noted.

The Wedbush analysts were equally impressed by Tesla’s progress in its operations at Gigafactory 1, where it produces batteries and drive units for the Model 3. Ives wrote in a recent report to clients that based on what he has seen, Gigafactory 1’s current output will be able to support a steady production rate of 7,000 Model 3 per week, thanks to “more automation, robotics, data analysis, and streamlined capacity” at the site.

Commenting on Tesla’s recent challenges, which include Elon Musk and the SEC’s ongoing skirmishes, the Wedbush analyst argued that the electric car maker’s long-term strategy remains stable. “I view this as a company where, it was never going to be an easy road for Tesla. A lot of the issues are unfortunate that are happening with the SEC and Musk, and it’s created a sideshow that’s been a bit of an overhang on the name. But I look at the name as the first inning of what I view as a massive EV transformation that’s going to happen over the next decade,” Ives said.

Tesla is currently conducting its end of quarter push for Q1 2019. The company is hard at work delivering the Model 3 to China and Europe, the vehicle’s first two foreign markets. A leaked email from Tesla senior vice president Sanjay Shah also suggested that Tesla is rallying its workers to deliver up to 30,000 vehicles during the second half of March.

Dan Ives has a price target of $390 per share for Tesla.
