Tesla owners flood DMV in China as Model 3 deliveries continue to surge

Tesla’s Model 3 push in China appears to be bearing fruit, as more and more people take deliveries of the electric sedan this first quarter. This was highlighted by footage taken this Thursday in Beijing, which depicted what could only be described as a flood of Model 3 practically taking over one of the offices of Beijing’s Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV).

Recent footage shared online show throngs of Tesla Model 3 owners lining up to get license plates for their vehicles. Several lines of Model 3 were reportedly already present at the office’s grounds before peak hours, and over the day, more and more of the electric cars showed up. Interestingly enough, most of the vehicles in the footage were Model 3 Performance, as revealed by the sedans’ Power Sports Aero Wheels, which are only available for the Chinese market.

It should be noted that these instances are quite rare in China, especially considering that the Model 3 owners flooded the DMV office on a Thursday, which is in the middle of the workweek. The footage was also taken from only one of Beijing’s DMV locations. Thus, it would not be surprising at all if the government office’s other sites were just as filled with Model 3.

These updates from Beijing ultimately bodes well for Tesla’s current Model 3 push in China. Tesla started bringing the Model 3 to Europe and China this first quarter, and the company is pretty much betting on the vehicle to make as big of an impact on foreign markets as it did in the United States last year. Amidst reports of busy Tesla delivery centers and social media accounts from enthusiasts in the country, it appears that Chinese electric car buyers are warming up to the Model 3.

A part of this is likely due to the government’s strict policies regarding vehicles equipped with the internal combustion engine, and its overt support for electric cars. China is already the world’s largest market for electric vehicles, and the market is only bound to get bigger as the country continues its efforts to promote sustainable transportation. Today, China does this by incentivizing electric car owners, and among these perks is easier access to license plates for vehicles like the Model 3, as well as some tax benefits.

Tesla’s Model 3 strategy in China is only beginning. For now, the company is focusing on bringing the car’s higher-end trims such as the Long Range RWD, Long Range AWD, and Performance variants to the country. By the end of the year, Tesla aims to start Model 3 production in Gigafactory 3, which is expected to build affordable versions of the electric sedan, as well as the recently-unveiled Model Y SUV.
