Recent reports in China continue to hint at the progress of the work inside Gigafactory 3. Just recently, Chinese sources have noted that a number of inspectors wearing Dürr uniforms have been sighted in the Gigafactory 3 complex, suggesting that work is now underway for what could very well be the electric car production facility’s paint shop.
The Dürr Group is one of the world’s leading mechanical and plant engineering firms that specializes in automation and digitization. Dürr, among its services, is also a premier provider of automated painting solutions. With this in mind, the presence of Dürr inspectors on the Gigafactory 3 site appears to suggest that the installation of the Model 3’s production equipment is proceeding well, or perhaps the construction of the paint shop is now underway.
The progress of the work in Gigafactory 3’s interior has been notable. While images of preliminary installations being done inside the general assembly building have emerged over the past months, the pictures that Tesla shared featuring production equipment populating Gigafactory 3’s floor in its Q2 2018 Update Letter have astounded the Tesla community. The first pillar of Gigafactory 3’s general assembly building was only set up in the middle of March, after all, which was less than five months ago.
This is not the first time that employees from notable companies have been spotted at the Gigafactory 3 complex. This past June, personnel wearing safety vests from ABB Robotics were spotted around the facility as the construction of the southwest substation was underway. ABB Robotics is a company that specializes in, among several segments, manufacturing, and power. With this in mind, and with recent reports of Dürr inspectors on the site, it appears that Gigafactory 3 is steadily nearing completion.
The buildout of Gigafactory 3 has been incredibly rapid. Elon Musk noted during the facility’s groundbreaking ceremony last January that he expects Model 3 production to begin by the end of the year. In a recent announcement on its official Weibo account, Tesla China noted that Gigafactory 3 is on track to meet its production target and that its buildout is running smoothly. The company also mentioned that the facility will build a “modification” of the Model 3, an apparent reference to the affordable version of the vehicle that will be produced in the factory.
While Elon Musk has stated that Gigafactory 3 will likely start Model 3 production at the end of the year, previous reports from China have suggested that trial production runs of the electric sedan could begin as early as September, ramping to a rate of around 3,000 vehicles per week once operations are fully underway.
