Tesla Gigafactory 3 employees to start end of July ahead of Model 3 production: report

It appears that Elon Musk’s infamously aggressive timetables have met their match, with recent local reports from China suggesting that Tesla’s Gigafactory 3 in Shanghai could have its first team of employees as early as the end of July 2019.

Chinese publication 21st Century Business Herald has noted that Tesla’s Gigafactory 3 is currently expected to begin trial runs of Model 3 production in September, around the same time as the completion of a substation being built southwest of the expansive general assembly building. Starting off the facility’s operations are employees who have passed through Tesla’s rigorous screening process, most of which have been hired through three rounds of well-received job fairs.

Tesla has so far ramped its hiring efforts for Gigafactory 3, hosting its third job fair at the start of this month. Similar to previous hiring events, numerous positions were opened by the company, from technicians and managers, production workers, and openings for the logistics and quality teams. The job fair was a success, as around 500 applicants with front-line vehicle production experience were reportedly interviewed by Tesla every day during the hiring event.

According to a Yicai Global report, employees who were able to meet Tesla’s standards have already received oral confirmation notifying them of their employment with the electric car maker. The workers have reportedly been informed to report for duty around the end of July 2019. This timeframe is quite notable, considering that large sections of Gigafactory 3, particularly the areas that remain uncovered, are still being prepared for operations.

With Tesla reportedly informing its first batch of Gigafactory 3 employees that they would start work as early as the end of July, it appears that initial sections of the massive electric car factory might already be nearing completion. This could very well be the case, considering that Gigafactory 3’s Phase 1 buildout has been largely completed. Images taken of several areas inside the facility last month, for example, suggest that some sections of the electric car production facility were already getting finished.

Elon Musk received some criticism earlier this year when he stated that he expects Gigafactory 3 to start Model 3 production by the end of the year. As it turns out, China’s workforce appears to be intent on outdoing the Tesla CEO’s infamously aggressive timetables. With its current pace and with the country’s targets in mind, it appears that Gigafactory 3 could very well hit volume production for the Model 3 earlier than expected.
