Tesla Cybertruck to challenge Ford F-150 in tug-of-war rematch

The Tesla Cybertruck will be going head-to-head against the Ford F-150 in a tug-of-war rematch. Following a challenge from Ford X VP Sundeep Madra, Musk has stated that the all-electric monster and the iconic veteran pickup will be going head-to-head once more, possibly as early next week.

During the Cybertruck’s unveiling, Tesla showcased a video of its pickup truck engaging in a tug-of-war battle against a Ford F-150. The all-electric truck did not break any sweat during the demonstration, easily pulling a screaming Ford behind it. The image it provided was notable, though the video itself seemed to have some issues.

For one, the F-150 used in the video appeared to be a 2WD XLT variant, which is equipped with either a lower-end V8 or Ford’s smaller 2.7L Ecoboost. This brought a lot of Tesla skeptics forward, many of whom argued that the test was unfavorable for the F-150 from the start.

Lightly responding to these points, Sundeep Madra, the VP for Ford X, the automaker’s venture incubator, asked Elon Musk if the CEO could send over a Cybertuck their way so that they can do an “apples to apples” test. Musk seemed game with the challenge, telling the Ford exec to “bring it on.”

Other notable personalities have since weighed in on the Tesla Cybertruck vs Ford F-150 tug-of-war battle. Astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson, for one, noted that if the Ford was really an RWD variant and it had no payload, the weight on its rear axle will be reduced and it will only offer mild traction for the Tesla to overcome. Musk has responded to this as well, stating that the torque in electric motors will still give it an edge against the Ford F-150.

“Electric motors also have insane torque. If we load both trucks to the max, electric still wins. Physics is the law, everything else is a recommendation,” Musk wrote, adding that the demonstration will be webcast, perhaps as early as next week.

A rematch between a top-tier Ford F-150 and the Tesla Cybertruck will definitely an exciting battle. If Ford does bring out its best F-150, the vehicle will be equipped with a top-of-the-line 3.5L Ecoboost engine that will provide a much bigger challenge to the Cybertruck compared to the seemingly XLT trim that it pulled in the demo. Couple this with the fact that Tesla’s working prototype for the Cybertruck is a mid-tier dual-motor AWD variant and Ford may have more than a fighting chance.

That being said, electric motors are known for their insane available power on demand. Even Tesla’s large city car, the Model X, is known to hold its own against a Hummer H2 in a tug-of-war battle. The Cybertruck, which is likely far heavier and tougher than the Model X, will likely be an even more formidable tug-of-war competitor.

Now if Ford brings out its F-150 electric prototype, the same vehicle that pulled over 1 million pounds in a demonstration, then the battle between the electric car maker and the longtime veteran automaker will get even more interesting.
