Tesla fan builds LEGO Cybertruck and now rallying to get it made


One Tesla Cybertruck fan has gone the extra mile by creating a LEGO version of the futuristic electric truck and submitting it to the Danish toy maker’s Ideas program.

The proponent who goes by the handle BrickinNick on Twitter and Instagram shared his dream with his followers and requests for support to ‘brick’ his idea to life.

“The Tesla Cybertruck comes to life in the brick. And you can help this polarizing electric vehicle become a real LEGO set over on LEGO Ideas,” BrickinNick wrote.

The idea of creating a Cybertruck LEGO to immortalize the upcoming electric pick-up truck has gained some immediate support in Twitterverse.

“Woooh let’s get this made,” said a Twitter user @shaybaz.

Another Twitter user Joshua David Hopp wrote, “That should be an actual LEGO set. That’s epic.”

LEGO Ideas is a fan program that encourages enthusiasts to unleash their creativity. One can submit an idea online and build it using actual LEGO bricks or a virtual building tool. Once done, the toy builder submits photos of their creation to LEGO and await approval. When approved, one should promote the project online or offline to gain the support needed.

“The journey of becoming a LEGO Fan designer is incredibly challenging and requires a unique brick-built concept, solid planning, a boatload of determination, as well as a healthy amount of patience,” the LEGO Ideas website reads.

Ideas such as BrickinNick’s Tesla Cybetruck needs 10,000 supporters before qualifying for a round of expert review. Once approved, the toy builder then collaborates with LEGO designers to finalize the design for production and eventually for the store shelves.

In the past, other fans of Elon Musk and his companies submitted promising ideas to LEGO, including a campaign for a Space X Falcon 9 Rocket kit which has gained 2,700 supporters since its 2017 beginning. There was also a fan who built a Tesla Model 3 complete with Sentry Mode for LEGO Ideas.

The Tesla Cybertruck was unwrapped on Nov. 21 featuring an aggressive, futuristic design, ultra-hard stainless steel, 14K lbs. towing capacity, and a $40,000 base price.

It was not love at first sight for most at Wall Street with shares of Tesla taking a hit after the Cybertruck unveiling. LEGO even made fun of Tesla over Twitter following the Armored Glass fail.

As of reporting, the Tesla Cybertruck LEGO set has 124 supporters. The project has surpassed the 100-supporter milestone and has gained an extra 365 days for the campaign.  Supporters have 424 days left to cast their votes.

Ford Mach-E touchscreen demo only highlights Tesla’s stark lead in user experience


Tesla holds a lead in several aspects of the electric car market, from its battery management and efficiency to its over-the-air software updates. Part of this is due to its vertical integration, which allows the company to develop software that is specifically designed to work well with its vehicles’ hardware. This makes Tesla’s electric cars pretty much the vehicle equivalent of the iPhone and iOS in terms of its smoothness and ease of use. 

This is not to say that Tesla’s software is perfect, of course. The company’s vehicles still encounter bugs at times, and it is evident that there is still a lot of room for improvement. That being said, if a recent video of the Ford Mustang Mach-E’s in-car software and UI is any indication, it appears that even in its ever-improving state, Tesla’s in-car software is leagues beyond the competition. 

During the LA Auto Show, Tesla enthusiasts Rob of the Tesla Daily podcast, Galileo of YouTube’s Hyperchange channel, and TSLA investor Matt Joyce opted to take a look at the recently-unveiled Ford Mustang Mach-E, a premium all-electric crossover that is expected to compete with the upcoming Tesla Model Y. Strangely enough, to gain access to the vehicle’s interior, the Tesla Daily podcast host and the rest of the group had to pay a refundable reservation fee of $500.

Once inside, a Ford representative gave a brief walkthrough of the Mach-E’s features, particularly its portrait-oriented center display. Footage taken of the demo from the Hyperchange host revealed that the software in the Mach-E’s infotainment system is notably slow and laggy when responding to touch inputs. When asked about why this was the case, the Ford representative stated that it was likely due to the display being on for several days. 

Granted, the Ford Mustang Mach-E in the LA auto show was a demo unit, and as such, its software is likely still in its developmental phase. Thus, Ford has a good amount of time to refine its all-electric crossover’s software before it gets released to the market. 

Unfortunately, veteran automakers have a reputation for releasing in-car software that is about as quick and responsive as the first touchscreen phones that attempted to rival the first iPhones more than a decade ago. The Jaguar I-PACE, for example, is a vehicle that has received over 60 awards from esteemed organizations and media agencies, but the vehicle’s infotainment system cannot hold a candle to the Model 3’s software and user interface. 

The same is true for the Audi e-tron. The vehicle is posh and luxurious, but when it comes to software, the car just does not feel like it is equipped with the best that tech has to offer. This is something that was explained by Elon Musk on Twitter, when he addressed why the auto industry is simply not very good at in-car tech. “Connected, autonomous cars require great software. Advanced factories also require great software. The car industry is not very good at software,” Musk wrote. 

Considering that the Mustang Mach-E is expected to be released next year, Ford would have to work really hard to make sure that its all-electric crossover gives users an experience that is more Tesla than Jaguar. The all-electric crossover market expects as much.

Tesla owner Smart Summons Model 3 across a snow covered parking lot


A Tesla Model 3 owner demonstrated his vehicle’s ability to “Smart Summon” across a snow-covered parking lot and it performed flawlessly. The video posted to Youtube is one of the first instances of Smart Summon being used in conditions where minimal visual indicators exist for the vehicle’s Autopilot suite of sensors.

YouTuber Daniel Spalding navigated his Red Multi-Coat Model 3 to his location using the Tesla App and Smart Summon’s “COME TO ME” feature. The demonstration showed the Model 3 carefully navigating toward Spalding’s location, giving the impression that the vehicle may have recognized the pathway in spite of the poor visibility.

The vehicle traveled at a controlled pace of 1 MPH, a slow but extremely safe pace considering the road conditions. In addition to this, the vehicle did not have any guidance from road lines are parking spots to maneuver, proving the software of Smart Summon does not need direct assistance from already painted street indicators to operate in a safe manner.

Spalding threw another wrench into the test by moving around the parking lot even more to confuse his Model 3. The car changed its destination and followed Spalding around without any issues, proving the vehicle was able to adapt to adjustments to the final location being summoned to.

Smart Summon is arguably Tesla’s most polarizing vehicle feature. While many owners are impressed with the performance and have demonstrated examples of how the feature has benefitted them, others have criticized the feature as “glitchy”, working intermittently, and with questionable benefits for consumers in its current state.

Smart Summon was released in late September with the V10 update and included Smart Summon and numerous entertainment features, such as Cuphead – Tesla Edition, Caraoke, Joe Mode, and “I’m Feeling Lucky.” During the company’s Q3 earnings call, CEO Elon Musk noted Smart Summon had been used by Tesla owners over 1 million times. Tesla would then use this data to improve upon the software. While it is not known how many times the feature has been used now, Musk said the Tesla owners were the reason the feature had been so successful. Musk said, “…this really illustrates the value of having a massive fleet, because it allows us to collect these corner cases and learn from them.”

Tesla’s Elon Musk explains Cybertruck’s adaptive air suspension after seeing a Ford F-350 get mangled


For the Tesla Cybertruck to excel in the pickup truck market, it will have to exceed or at least match the utility capabilities of the industry’s biggest players such as Ford, whose F-150 has become an icon of the United States. Elon Musk’s recent comment regarding the results of a rather shocking test on a Ford F-350 hints that the Cybertruck will have the goods to make it a formidable competitor in the pickup market, and then some. 

Tesla enthusiast John D. recently shared a video of a Ford F-350 with 3,000 lbs of payload in its bed being tested on a sloped platform. The video was brief, but it contained a particularly painful incident showing the F-350’s tailgate warping due to the way the vehicle was positioned. It was a bit shocking, to say the least, especially since the Ford truck is considered as one of the market’s more durable pickups. The massive truck’s tailgate could not be opened after it warped as well. 

Responding to the video, Elon Musk explained that such incidents would not happen on the Cybertruck, as the domineering all-electric vehicle is equipped with adaptive air suspension, which was demoed briefly during the vehicle’s unveiling event. “That’s why Cybertruck has active suspension height & damping control,” Musk said. 

The Tesla CEO’s statements seem to be the tip of the iceberg, as other features of the Cybertruck would likely prevent the same warping incidents that haunted the Ford F-350 in the test. The Cybertruck’s non-ladder-frame design, for example, means that its bed is not separated from the cab like the F-350. Its fully-integrated exoskeleton and XY design should also help greatly in load-bearing. 

This will likely be a strong selling point for the Cybertruck, considering that such warping incidents are reportedly often on vehicles that actually get put to work in the country. If Tesla can prove that the Cybertruck has what it takes to ensure that the vehicle does not warp even in conditions that would damage its competitors, it could establish itself as the pickup truck to beat in terms of durability. 

The Tesla Cybertruck is, in a way, a vehicle that is a page away from the electric car maker’s playbook. With a bold XY design, the Cybertruck is incredibly different compared to Tesla’s existing Model S, 3, and X lineup. Yet, despite this, the vehicle has been lauded by auto expert Jack Rickard, who noted that the pickup may very well prove to be Elon Musk’s boldest and greatest creation yet, thanks to its durability, power, features, and its potential off-road capability.

“He hit all the right notes, on here is a truck you can take a sledgehammer to, and you can beat this truck all you want and it doesn’t even show damage. And it has an off-road capability in case you ever roll it up onto the front lawn of your house,” he said.

Tesla China’s battery facility shell nears completion as Model 3 fleet assembles in GF3


Tesla’s Gigafactory 3 in China may still be waiting for its final approvals before it could start delivering the locally-produced Model 3, but the construction activities in the Shanghai-based complex are still moving at an accelerated pace. The electric car maker’s battery facility shell is almost done, for one, and a growing fleet of Model 3 has recently been spotted in GF3’s parking lots.

Recent footage from drone operator Wuwa Vision revealed that Gigafactory 3’s Phase 1 zone is fully complete and refined. Its grounds are fully paved, its roads are painted, and even the grass surrounding the factory have been planted. Multiple Teslas parked around the general assembly building could also be seen in the recent video. 

Yet, perhaps the most impressive aspect of the recent flyover was the fact that Gigafactory 3’s Phase 2 area, which is allotted for battery module production, is progressing well. Its factory shell is nearing completion, with Phase 2’s roofing almost complete and the building’s walls now being laid. The battery facility is notably smaller than the vehicle assembly building in the Phase 1 area, but it is a pretty massive building in its own right.

This is particularly impressive considering that work on Phase 2 only seemed to have started in late Q3 2019. In early September, the entire Phase 2 zone was only comprised of a plot of land with some digging going on. But around 12 weeks after that, a massive factory shell is now nearing completion. That’s not bad at all, considering that Tesla was also busy refining Gigafactory 3’s Model 3 production lines during this time. 

Apart from the stunning progress of Phase 2, a growing fleet of Made-in-China Model 3 was also sighted in the parking lot in between the general assembly building and the upcoming battery facility. Based on the drone flyover, it appears that there are over a hundred Model 3s parked in Gigafactory 3’s parking lots when the footage was taken. Considering that Tesla has already received a mass-production license from the Chinese government, there is a good chance that more Model 3s are being produced in the facility. 

Tesla’s Gigafactory 3 is a key difference-maker in the electric car maker’s efforts at breaching the local Chinese market. China hosts the world’s largest EV market, and having a local factory producing vehicles for local car buyers would likely play in Tesla’s favor, as it would allow the company to reduce its Model 3 costs in the country while helping the nation achieve its aggressive sustainability goals.

Tesla Model Y with matte black and chrome trim spotted at LA-Vegas Supercharger


A Tesla Model Y with a combination of matte black window trim and Tesla’s signature chrome trim was spotted at the Barstow, CA Supercharger station over the US Thanksgiving weekend.

Tesla owner and Redditor ChooChooSparky recounts pulling up next to the all-electric crossover while charging, but without initially realizing it was a Model Y.  “When I pulled up I thought ‘Wow, they’re serious about blacking it out to take a nap.’ Then when he pulled off the cover and I saw the black model 3 style door handles, ‘That’s no regular Tesla SUV!!,’” noted the Tesla owner.

Another Redditor was in the scene and confirmed the sighting.

“My wife and I were there when it was charging. They had the car completely covered and the guy driving it stayed in the car. I would have never noticed it was a model Y if they hadn’t started putting the cover on,” user Uofaer wrote.

In a video posted to r/teslamotors, the Midnight Silver Metallic Model Y can be seen leaving the Barstow Supercharger station,  a common stopping point between Los Angeles and Las Vegas, and one of Tesla’s first fast-charging stations in Southern California. Noticeable is the Model 3-style door handles and “chrome deleted” matte black trim which made its first debut at the Tesla Model Y unveiling in early 2019. However, chrome trim was also present on the vehicle, a standard finish for the Model S, Model 3, and Model X.

“It actually looked like the chrome trim had tape wrapped all around it. A little part on the front door looked lifted up,” Redditor ChooChooSparky added.

This marks, at least, the fifth Tesla Model Y sighting in recent months and a strong indicator that pre-production could be taking place in early 2020. Just last month, a Model Y was spotted cruising along California Route 17 with several measurement apparatus most likely used to calibrate driver-assist features. Other Model Y sightings revealed the elusive “Wind Turbine” wheels, which were first showcased on a Model 3 prototype at the vehicle’s unveiling event.

As more and more sightings of the Model Y testing on public roads are reported, we can only assume that Elon Musk and his team are gearing up to produce what is anticipated to become the company’s best-selling car. Originally slated for the Fall of 2020, the new customer delivery date of Model Y has been moved up to Summer 2020.

There are also reports that Tesla has instructed parts suppliers BizLink and HOTA to begin production of Model Y parts earlier than scheduled. This indicates that mass production may soon start, possibly even before 2019 ends.

Tesla Model Y has a starting price of $48,000, seating for 5 to 7 people, and available in a Long Range, Dual Motor, and Performance configuration.

SpaceX Starship hardware mystery solved amid reports of Florida factory upheaval


A SpaceX Starship hardware mystery has been effectively solved after rocket parts arrived at Port Canaveral and were loaded aboard a transport ship, seemingly preparing for an unexpected journey by sea.

In an unexpected turn of events, SpaceX appears to be preparing to ship major Starship hardware from its Cocoa, Florida facility to a similar worksite in Boca Chica, Texas. Spotted for the first time in a photo taken by local photographer Greg Scott on November 30th, that hardware – at least two large stands and a nearly-complete steel tank dome – abruptly appeared beside SpaceX’s Port Canaveral dock space.

Seemingly within hours of their appearance, new vessel GO Discovery also arrived in Port Canaveral and parked by the same SpaceX docks. Shortly thereafter, workers loaded her with both build stands and a Starship tank dome and secured the surprise cargo. As it turns out, another local SpaceX-follower and prolific photographer/videographer happened to capture the disappearance of both stands and dome from SpaceX’s nearby Cocoa, FL Starship construction facility, where Starship Mk2 and Starship Mk4 were being built.

This neatly ties up the minor mystery of where that hardware went: SpaceX clearly moved all three parts to Port Canaveral, where they have since been loaded on a small supply ship. Two main questions remain, however: why have they been moved to the port and where are they headed?

The band is breaking up

Unfortunately, it appears that both questions can effectively be answered by a report published by YouTube channel “What about it?!”. According to former Cocoa employee that spoke to reporter and channel creator Felix Schlang, SpaceX has reportedly transferred up to 80% of the Starship facility’s workforce to other groups in Florida and Texas. Instead of the friendly internal competition that pitted Cocoa against Boca Chica in the race to first Starship flight, SpaceX is temporarily slowing down its Florida build operations and will redirect as much of its workforce and resources as possible to Boca Chica.

According to Schlang’s source, this will likely result in several months of relative downtime in Florida, while he was also told that Starship Mk2 and Mk4 are now effectively dead before arrival as a result of several challenging and reoccurring technical issues. Starship Mk2 likely shares some significant heritage with Starship Mk1, which lost its top during a pressure test. Roughly two-dozen steel Starship Mk4 rings may also be scrapped after SpaceX’s Florida team could not overcome a technical hurdle. Per the source, many of those single-weld steel rings were slightly different diameters, making it next to impossible to build a sound pressure vessel (i.e. Starship Mk4) with them.

Combining the appearance of Starship hardware on GO Discovery just yesterday and reports of major Cocoa layoffs, it’s all but certain that the Starship components on Discovery are going to head to Boca Chica, Texas. Schlang’s source also indicated that all affected employees were given the option to transfer to Boca Chica or Hawthorne, a prime indication that this abrupt change in plans is more a strategic move than a financial one. With any luck, most affected employees will be able to transfer to Florida pad operations or Boca Chica, although such a major and abrupt change is likely a no-go for anyone with major ties to South Florida.

The Starship dome and stands now likely headed for Boca Chica were built over the course of a month or two in Florida, meaning that they were either built under the impression that they would support Boca Chica’s Starship Mk3 prototype or repurposed after SpaceX decided to pause work in Cocoa. Of note, something like 8-12 of Starship Mk4’s steel rings were able to be stacked and all of those double-rings are still present at SpaceX Cocoa, while a number of single rings were indeed scrapped over the last few weeks. A header tank was also reportedly removed from Starship Mk2’s more or less finished nose section. If any of that hardware is technically viable, there’s a good chance that they may also be shipped to Texas to expedite Starship Mk3 integration.

Ultimately, given how rapidly SpaceX makes and changes decisions, pausing work in Cocoa doesn’t come as much of a surprise. It’s also far from the end of SpaceX’s Florida Starship-building efforts – Schlang indicates that SpaceX will instead focus on a similar facility located within Kennedy Space Center, making the process of building Starships offsite and transporting to Launch Pad 39A far more viable.

With this latest surprise, it also appears that SpaceX is now laser-focused on getting Starship Mk3 ready for South Texas flight testing. Stay tuned for an update on a flurry of recent developments at SpaceX’s Boca Chica Starship facilities.

Tesla Autopilot steers around rogue barrier at construction site with ease


Tesla’s Autopilot continues to get more refined with each new update, and if a recent video from a Model 3 owner is any indication, it appears that the driver-assist system is getting more capable in recognizing and reacting to unexpected incidents on the road. Take, for example, a rogue construction cone strangely placed in the Tesla’s lane. 

Chris of the Dirty Tesla YouTube channel was conducting one of his “Tesla Challenge” videos when his Model 3, which was running 2019.40.1.1, encountered a construction site. The area was lined with numerous construction barrels, some of which started cutting off the Model 3’s lane. This proved to be no problem for Autopilot, as the driver-assist system simply moved to the next lane without missing a beat. 

As with many things in the freeway, something unexpected happened. At the end of the row of construction cones was a barrel that was actually in the Model 3’s lane. Hands ready at the steering wheel, the Tesla owner prepared to take over just in case the Autopilot does not react properly. But it did. As could be seen in the footage, the Model 3 avoided the stray construction cone before moving back to the center of its lane.

This is quite an improvement in Tesla’s driver-assist system, as the Model 3 ended up almost crossing into the next lane when it maneuvered around the rogue construction barrel. A look at the footage from the vehicle’s built-in dashcam showed just how close the Model 3 was to crossing into the adjacent lane during its evasive maneuver. The vehicle did not reduce its speed either when it avoided the construction zone. 

Unfortunately, Chris’ Model 3 is still equipped with Hardware 2.5 and thus, the construction cones on the road were not rendered on the vehicle’s center display. Had the car been equipped with HW 3.0, it would have likely depicted the exact location of the rogue barrel as Autopilot evaded it. This seemed to be the case, as Navigate on Autopilot’s blue line actually curved when the Model 3 was avoiding the construction barrel. 

These incidents hint at the subtle Autopilot improvements that Tesla has been releasing to its fleet with each new software update. With each improvement, the electric car maker is stepping a bit forward towards Elon Musk’s goal of releasing a feature-complete version of Full Self-Driving to the company’s early access users by the end of the year. With references to inner-city driving being found in Tesla’s source code, and with Navigate on Autopilot becoming more and more robust, Musk’s optimistic target may prove to be feasible after all.

Mexico Mayor orders Tesla Cybertrucks for police use: decision was ‘common sense’


The Tesla Cybertruck appears to be attracting more and more customers thanks to its price and utility, including those in positions of power. Just recently, the mayor of Cuidad Valles, a municipality in San Luis Potosí, Mexico, announced that he has reserved 15 units of the all-electric pickup. The reason? They’re tough, capable, and very affordable to maintain and run. 

In a statement to news outlet El Imparcial, Mayor Adrián Esper Cárdenas explained that the 15 Cybertrucks he ordered will primarily be used by the municipality’s police force. The vehicles will also be utilized for otherwise heavy tasks such as pulling “water pipes and garbage containers” thanks to their power and speed. Overall, the reservation cost the municipality about MXN$30K or a little over US$1,500.

The Mexican mayor added that he ordered ten units of the Dual Motor AWD variant and an additional five units of the tri-motor AWD version. Cárdenas did not reveal which of the vehicles will be specifically deployed for the municipality’s police force. Speaking with media representatives, the mayor added that while the Cybertruck purchases would likely amount to about MXN$20 million pesos (about $1 million), these costs are expected to be offset by savings offered by the vehicles.

Cárdenas noted that the Cybertrucks would likely generate millions worth of savings per year due to their low operating costs. The mayor also assured members of the media that the cost of maintaining the vehicles is almost nothing compared to comparable vehicles. And if components do break, they can be replaced by warranty. Couple this with the Cybertrucks’ tough build and near-armored frame, and the vehicles will likely pay for themselves in savings within years of their service. 

Ultimately, Cárdenas argued that his decision to reserve 15 of Tesla’s Cybertrucks was a matter of “common sense,” considering that the vehicle is capable and able to offer a number of benefits to the municipality. 

The Tesla Cybertruck, with its tough exoskeleton and domineering size, has been eyed by law enforcement agencies for official use. In the United States, for example, the Kansas Highway Patrol serving the North Central Kansas area has noted on its official Twitter account that it is looking forward to using the all-electric pickup for its fleet of police vehicles. The Dubai Police has also placed an order for the Tesla Cybertruck, which will be deployed alongside some of the world’s most exclusive police cars like the Aston Martin One-77.

Tesla source code reveals Autopilot for city streets and Asia markets in focus


Tesla appears to be laying the groundwork for the rollout of upcoming Full Self-Driving features, as well as a more widespread release of Autopilot’s more advanced features in Asia. The updates were included in the electric car maker’s recently-released 19.40.1.1 update and shared on Twitter by Tesla owner @greentheonly, who has been analyzing the company’s driver-assist system for years. 

The Tesla owner-enthusiast noted that the recent update included a very interesting code. This code was “CityStreetsBehavior,” which is reportedly new in Tesla’s driver-assist system. The function of this code remains unannounced by Tesla, though its name does suggest that it relates to automatic driving in city streets, an upcoming feature for Tesla’s Full Self-Driving system.

Additional features of Tesla’s Full Self-Driving system have been mentioned by Elon Musk, with the CEO previously stating that he believes the company’s FSD suite would be “feature-complete” by the end of the year. This timeframe is closing in fast, though the addition of this new code in Autopilot suggests that Tesla is expediting its FSD rollout. It should be noted that Elon Musk has also mentioned that Tesla will likely conduct a limited early access release of FSD’s feature-complete version by the end of 2019. 

Also included among the changes included in Tesla’s recent update include several improvements such as license plate routing for the Chinese market and improved guidance view for China and Korea. Unfortunately, Autopilot also received some updates for the Japanese market that limits the driver-assist feature, similar to how it is employed in the European region

The inclusion of Autopilot improvements for the Chinese market is particularly notable, considering that Tesla is expected to expand its presence in the Asian country soon. With the completion of Gigafactory 3’s Phase 1 zone, Tesla is now ready to sell the Model 3 en masse in China. So far, the company has received a mass manufacturing license for Gigafactory 3 and is only now waiting for its final permits to start deliveries of the Model 3 to the region. 

With this in mind, there will likely be a massive influx of new Tesla owners in the Chinese market, and since Gigafactory 3 will be producing the Standard Range Plus Model 3, practically all of these vehicles will be equipped with basic Autopilot. License plate routing and improved guidance view would then be incredibly useful features for China-based Model 3 owners. 

Other key features included in Tesla’s recent update are improvements to Tesla’s charging features. The Model 3 Standard Range and Standard Range Plus, for example, are now capable of charging up to 170 kW, while the Mid-Range version has been improved to 200 kW. The company’s automatic wipers have also been improved, thanks to data gathered by the Neural Network.
