SpaceX says crew spacecraft abort test still on track for 2019 launch

NASA recently invited members of the media to apply for access to SpaceX’s Crew Dragon in-flight abort (IFA) test and, as of December 5th, the company reaffirmed that the crucial test is still on track to launch just weeks from now.

In September, SpaceX CEO Elon Musk revealed that Crew Dragon’s IFA spacecraft and Falcon 9 was scheduled to arrive in Florida within a few weeks. Days later, NASA confirmed that the rocket and spacecraft arrived in Florida on October 3rd, sooner, in fact, than Musk had predicted. Over the next few weeks, SpaceX technicians and engineers effectively closed out Crew Dragon capsule C205, priming it for operations and installing its body panels.

(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});

On November 13th, about six weeks after arriving in Florida, SpaceX successfully tested Crew Dragon’s redesigned propellant plumbing and high-pressure gas systems by static firing its Draco thrusters and SuperDraco abort engines. The successful static fire test lasted around 9 seconds, mirroring the SuperDraco impulse and thruster inputs the spacecraft would need to demonstrate in an actual in-flight abort. Crew Dragon has four sets of two SuperDraco engines capable of producing a combined thrust of more than 130,000 lbs (570 kN), almost as much thrust as the original SpaceX Merlin 1D engines used on Falcon 9 in the early 2010s.

Meant to verify that SpaceX has successfully redesigned Crew Dragon after the spacecraft suffered a catastrophic explosion during a very similar static fire attempt, November 13th’s was followed by an exhaustive hardware inspection and data review, some of which is likely still ongoing. Although NASA’s media invite suggests that a given launch event could be just a month or so away, there is a ton of uncertainty when dealing with major launches of new hardware (like Crew Dragon), meaning delays are all but guaranteed.

During a pre-launch media briefing ahead of SpaceX’s CRS-19 Cargo Dragon launch, director of Dragon mission management Jessica Jensen answered a question about Crew Dragon’s IFA test, cautiously stating that SpaceX teams are “targeting [a] December” launch. During SpaceX’s December 5th CRS-19 launch webcast, Dragon Engineering Manager John Federspiel briefly brought up Crew Dragon, noting that SpaceX was completing “minor refurbishment” following its successful static fire.

Most notably, he stated the IFA test was “targeted for February of 2020”, while Crew Dragon’s subsequent ‘Demo-2’ astronaut launch debut was expected to follow no earlier than (NET) “the first quarter of [2020]”, implying either February or March.

As it happened, SpaceX and several media outlets almost immediately attempted to correct the record, instead suggesting that Crew Dragon’s abort test is still tracking towards a launch later this month. Given that a senior Dragon engineering manager was the one to unblinkingly – and without correction – state that IFA is NET February 2020, there’s a strong possibility that he is technically correct but was not supposed to publicize the mission’s delay. At the same time, SpaceX appears to be firm on its claim that IFA is still aiming for a late-December launch. Delays would be no surprise – Crew Dragon’s Demo-1 launch debut took an agonizing three months to go from heading to the launchpad for the first to actually lifting off, almost entirely due to minor technical bugs and NASA paperwork.

Regardless, with less than four weeks left in 2019, SpaceX has an exceptionally tight schedule ahead of it to meet that December 2019 IFA launch goal and will effectively have to static fire IFA’s Falcon 9 before the end of the week or crush Crew Dragon’s inaugural processing time by at least a factor of four to achieve it. As such, a delay in 2020 should be all but expected at this point. With any luck, however, Crew Dragon will successfully perform its in-flight abort within the next 4-8 weeks, leaving SpaceX in a good place to prepare for its inaugural astronaut launch a few months later.

Elon Musk gets Governor’s welcome to build Tesla Cybertruck in Alaska

The Tesla Cybertruck may be polarizing, but it is a vehicle that has captured the interest of the motoring world and beyond. And while neither Tesla nor Elon Musk has announced any details about where the upcoming all-electric pickup truck would be produced, this has not deterred a government official from extending an offer to the CEO.

In a recent tweet, Alaska governor Governor Mike Dunleavy invited Tesla CEO Elon Musk to consider utilizing the state’s resources to build the electric car maker’s premium vehicles. The governor specifically mentioned the company’s recently-unveiled Cybertruck in his offer, stating that AK stands above other areas when it comes to balancing resource development.

“Hey @elonmusk & @Tesla: Let’s talk about utilizing #Alaska’s vast resources to help build #Tesla cars and the new Cybertruck. Nobody in the world balances resource development and environmental stewardship better than us,” he wrote.

(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});

Dunleavy’s invitation is quite notable considering that the governor has reportedly maintained a controversial stance on climate action, a topic that Tesla CEO Elon Musk is very particular about. Over his tenure as Alaska’s governor, critics have argued that Dunleavy’s administration has done very little to combat climate change, as shown when he disbanded the state’s climate response task force just months after assuming office.

Neither Tesla nor Elon Musk has posted a response to the governor’s open invitation so far.

Yet, behind Dunleavy’s controversies with his administration, it is difficult to deny that Tesla and Elon Musk are now being perceived as a potential economic booster for areas where its facilities are located at. Reno, NV, for example, is seeing businesses come to the area due to the presence of Gigafactory 1. A facility that produces electric cars in Alaska will likely have the same effect.

The Tesla Cybertruck is Tesla’s most radical creation to date. Built with a rigid ultra-strong stainless steel exoskeleton, the all-electric pickup truck is tough and capable of being put through serious punishment. This is something that was highlighted by auto veteran Jack Rickard in a discussion on YouTube’s EVTV channel. Rickard noted that the Cybertruck’s polarizing design was not just put in place to make the vehicle unique; it is also functional.

Thanks to its polarizing XY design, the Cybertruck will not require a stamping press or a paint shop. This makes the vehicle easy to make, and this opens up the potential of a production line that is more compact and efficient than those adopted by the company for its previous cars like the Model 3. With this in mind, Tesla may be able to produce the Cybertruck in facilities that are not as expansive as the Fremont factory of Gigafactory 3 in Shanghai. This, of course, could accelerate the rollout of Elon Musk’s boldest, most futuristic vehicle to date.

SpaceX just hit a major milestone on its launch to the space station

SpaceX has successfully launched Cargo Dragon’s 19th space station resupply mission and says that the event also marked a symbolic Falcon 9 booster landing milestone.

(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});

At 12:29 pm ET (16:29 UTC), Falcon 9 lit its nine fresh Merlin 1D engines and roared off of SpaceX’s Cape Canaveral LC-40 launch pad, beginning a nine-minute trip to place Cargo Dragon in low Earth orbit (LEO). That flight-proven Dragon capsule – C106 – was supported by a rare new Falcon 9 booster – B1059 – on its inaugural flight.

Seven or so minutes after launch and a few minutes after a successful reentry burn and landing burn, Falcon 9 booster B1059 gently touched down aboard drone ship Of Course I Stil Love You (OCISLY), SpaceX’s 46th booster landing. Perhaps even more impressive, SpaceX says that with the recovery, Falcon 9 B1059 became the 20th booster to successfully launch and land, rounding out a rocket lineage that stretches all the back to April 2016.

April 2016 marked the inaugural launch and landing of a Falcon 9 booster at sea, the first success after several failed attempts. About a year later, that booster, B1021, became the world’s first reused liquid-fueled rocket booster in March 2017, a milestone that set SpaceX’s pace for the next several years to come.

Falcon 9 B1021 became the first orbital-class booster to launch and land twice in March 2017. (SpaceX)

In the ~33 months since SpaceX debuted the world’s first reusable liquid rocket booster, the company has leaned heavily into the standard it set then, becoming one of the world’s most prolific launch providers and continually working to make its rockets as affordable and capable as possible. As of CRS-19’s flawless December 5th launch and landing, SpaceX has performed 46 successful booster landings, with three Falcon Heavy missions representing an outsized 7 of those thanks to their three first-stage boosters.

All told, Falcon 9 alone has now completed 39 successful landings, meaning that of the rocket’s 76 total launches, more than half have been followed by booster recovery – this despite the fact that Falcon 9 debuted in 2010, while booster landings debuted in the final days of 2015.

After a relatively gentle launch and landing offered by Cargo Dragon’s lighter mass and lower target orbit, Falcon 9 B1059 should be a prime candidate for rapid reuse in the near future, perhaps supporting one of the two-dozen Starlink launches SpaceX has planned for 2020. Up next for SpaceX is a commercial communications satellite launch no earlier than December 15th, followed by either one or two more launches in the last week or two of the month, year, and decade.

Tesla’s Elon Musk wins defamation trial brought by British caver, “My faith in humanity is restored”

Tesla CEO Elon Musk has won a defamation lawsuit brought forth by British caver Vernon Unsworth. The jury of the Los Angeles federal court found Musk to be not liable for $190 million in damages asked by Unsworth. Musk’s Twitter exchange with Unsworth did not meet the legal standard for defamation, according to the court ruling on Friday.

Musk and Unsworth were involved in a war of words in the public eye after the Tesla CEO offered his help in the 2018 Tham Luang cave rescue in Thailand, where a team of junior soccer players was trapped. Musk offered multiple Tesla engineers, along with a small submarine to Thailand that was intended to rescue the boys from the cave.

Instead, Unsworth said the help from Musk was not genuine and accused him of running a “PR stunt” that had “absolutely no chance of working” and told him to “stick his submarine where it hurts,” in an interview with CNN. Musk responded with a tweet that insulted Unsworth, calling him a “pedo guy”, that has since been deleted. Musk stated the insult was commonly used in his native South Africa.

(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});

Musk testified in a Los Angeles courtroom on Tuesday and Wednesday and stated the tweet was not meant to be taken in a literal way. In fact, Musk did not realize Unsworth was apart of the search and rescue operation and thought he was “just some random creepy guy.” Musk apologized and said the tweets were “obviously a very off-the-cuff response.”

In court on Thursday, December 5, Unsworth said the words Musk used to describe him “humiliated him”. He told jurors, “It feels very raw. I feel humiliated. Ashamed. Dirtied. Effectively, from day one, I was given a life sentence without parole. It hurts to talk about it,” as he held back tears.

The $190 million Unsworth requested comprised of $150 million in punitive damages and $40 million for assumed and actual damages. However, Musk will not be required to pay this sum, a victory for the man responsible for bringing electric car company Tesla to the forefront. “my faith in humanity is restored,” Musk said as he left the courtroom.

All of the boys trapped in the cave survived. The only fatality took place during the search and rescue mission when a diver lost his life during the operation.

UK diesel sales see drastic decline amid Tesla and electric cars’ meteoric rise

Electric vehicles are becoming increasingly popular in the United Kingdom, while cars that are powered by diesel are seeing a decrease in demand. These statistics are based on figures released by The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT), a trade association for the automotive industry in the UK.

“Alternatively fueled vehicle (AFV) registrations reached a record market share, with more than one in 10 cars joining UK roads either hybrid, plug-in hybrid or pure electric,” the SMMT said. Compared to the month of November 2018, Battery Electric Vehicles (BEV) saw a 228.8% increase in sales, and became more than three times as popular in terms of market share, moving from 0.9% in 2018 to 3.0% in 2019, according to data released by the SMMT.

Inversely, Diesel plummeted dropped over 27% from what the UK saw in 2018. While these cars are still notably more popular than BEVs, Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicles (PHEV), or Hybrid Electric Vehicles (HEV) in terms of overall sales, their numbers are falling at a steady rate. Last month, only 36,941 diesel vehicles were sold, compared to 50,750 for the same month in 2018.

(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});

This decline in diesel sales could be attributed to former Chancellor of the Exchequer, the Royal Treasury, Philip Hammond’s decision to tax older diesel-powered vehicles last year. The tax charges £12.50 daily to diesel drivers in central London and took effect in April 2019. Next year, vans, buses, and other heavy pollution-emitting vehicles will see guidelines that may bring additional taxes, according to The Guardian. Weak business in the automotive market, decreasing consumer confidence, and uncertainty regarding clean air zones could also be attributed to the decreasing sales of diesel cars.

It is no secret the appeal of electric cars has been spreading across the world. However, the need to ween off the dependence on petrol-powered vehicles is coming from the UK’s goal to phase-out fossil fuels as an energy source for cars in the coming years. In Scotland, the goal is 2032, while in England, Wales, and Northern Ireland, the goal is a bit more conservative at 2040.

Tesla’s presence in the UK has become more notable as of late. The Model 3 won the “Car of the Year”, “Best Electric Car”, “Best Company Car”, and “Best Safety” awards from the prestigious automotive magazine Parker’s Car Guides, who were impressed with the vehicle in a multitude of ways. Parker’s representatives said the vehicle was “capable, likable, and extremely good to drive,” a description that seems to be used quite often when talking about Tesla’s most affordable electric car. It was also named the third best-selling car in the UK by the SMMT.

The SMMT’s report that diesel vehicle sales are falling while electric car sales are rising may be a sign that those in the UK are recognizing the economic and environmental advantages of battery-powered transportation. Even some who are interested in high-performance vehicles are now finding their preferences shift to electric propulsion, as the instant torque from a premium EV like a Tesla gives vehicles an exhilarating experience.

Tesla Model 3 gets greenlight from China for local incentives

Tesla’s Made-in-China Model 3 will be receiving subsidies for new energy vehicles, a development that serves as a big push for the electric car manufacturer trying to bite a chunk of the sales pie in the world’s largest automotive market.

The vehicles qualified for government subsidy were announced by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology on Friday through its website. Based on the list, there are two variants of the Model 3 that are granted subsidies and an initial report by Bloomberg estimates the savings to be as much as $3,550.

The U.S. carmaker plans to sell the Made-in-China Model 3 for RMB355,800 or about $50,000, as per Tesla’s initial announcements about the vehicle.

(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});

Tesla will produce the Model 3 units at its new Gigafactory in Shanghai that aims to roll out 3,000 vehicles a week, and it plans to deliver the cars to consumers before the end of January 2020 if given the green light to sell its locally-made vehicles.

The entry on the official list of new energy vehicles receiving subsidies in China shows the two Tesla vehicles which received incentives are of the same weight, with slightly different driving mileage and power consumption per hundred kilometers. The numbers hint that it could be the Model 3 Standard Range without Autopilot and Standard Range Plus that comes with basic Autopilot.

There were earlier leaks that Elon Musk’s electric car company might produce a Dual Motor AWD Model 3 variant in China, but it wasn’t clear if these units will be similar to the Long Range Dual Motor AWD vehicles being imported by the carmaker from the US today.

Tesla Made-in-China Model 3 Subsidy (Source: China Ministry of Industry and Information Technology | Translated via Google)

With the sale of the Made-in-China 3 Model 3 units imminent, we can expect Tesla to release more information soon as it tries to penetrate the Chinese market that’s already enjoying the presence of brands such as BMW and Daimler, as well as local electric vehicle manufacturers such as Xpeng Motors and NIO.

The Gigafactory in Shanghai broke ground in January and was ready to start electric car production after just 10 months. Tesla announced during its Q3 earnings call that everything’s ahead of schedule in its factory in China and Musk’s team seems to be delivering as promised as there were also recent reports that the factory’s parking lot is starting to fill with locally-produced Model 3 units.

As China pushes for more electric vehicles on the road, the subsidy for Made-in-China Model 3 will help Tesla even convince more locals to get behind the wheels of their electric vehicles. If the Made-in-China Model 3 succeeds in the market, there’s a good chance that the electric car maker cam bring the Model Y to the local Chinese market as well.

Will Tesla Cybertruck fit inside a home garage?

The Tesla Cybertruck is a massive vehicle, which is saying something considering that the Model S and Model X are already pretty large cars in their own right. The upcoming all-electric pickup truck has also become so popular as of late that a Tesla enthusiast has developed an augmented reality mobile app that provides a 1:1 render of the Cybertruck in real-world settings.

Reactions from some Cybertruck reservation holders and users of the AR app show that future owners of the upcoming vehicle may need to find a larger garage for their all-electric pickup.

Tesla enthusiast Tesla Raj outlined these findings in a recent video, with the Model 3 owner using the AR mobile app to see if the all-electric pickup fits in his car garage. Average two-car garages in the United States are about 20×20, 22×22, and, in other cases, 24×24 ft. These spaces are more than enough for sedans like the Tesla Model 3 or crossovers like the Model Y, but when it comes to larger vehicles like the Cybertruck, garages like a 20×20 would be a bit too small.

(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});

The Tesla owner-enthusiast’s garage is one of these spaces. As could be seen in the AR Cybertruck app’s 1:1 render, the all-electric pickup’s tailgate is actually a few inches too long for the Model 3 owner’s garage. And that’s with the vehicle being parked really close to the wall.

The Tesla Cybertruck, despite its large, domineering stance, is actually not too wide. With a width of 79.8 inches, the Cybertruck is only a little bit wider than the Model X, which is 78.7 inches wide. What makes the Cybertruck large is the vehicle’s height, which stands at 75 inches (compared to the Model X’s 66.3 inches), and its length, which is listed at 231.7 inches (compared to the Model X’s 198.3 inches). The size of the Cybertruck is fairly similar to the length of iconic pickups like the Ford F-150 in its SuperCrew variant, but it is far larger than that of Tesla’s other vehicles.

It should be noted that it’s not just the Tesla Cybertruck that is causing parking challenges for their owners. Dodge truck owners, for example, have noted in the Turbo Diesel Register forum that their RAM pickups are far too long for their garage. The same is true for several Ford F-150 Supercrew owners, who have noted in the F-150 Forum that they are unable to park their trucks inside their garages, or if they do, there is barely any space left.

Ultimately, the Tesla Cybertruck is a large vehicle, and it would have the advantages and disadvantages inherent in a six-seater pickup. Thus, the garage space challenges that future Cybertruck owners would face are the same challenges being encountered by traditional pickup truck buyers today. Fortunately, Tesla CEO Elon Musk has stated that a smaller Cybertruck, perhaps similar in size to the Ford Ranger, may be released in the future. Such a vehicle will still be as daunting as the original Cybertruck, but it will be far friendlier to smaller parking spaces.

Check out Tesla Raj’s recent video below. A link to the official AR Cybertruck app from Tesla enthusiast and app developer Pat Carver could also be accessed here

Tesla nears Elon Musk’s ‘feature-complete’ Full Self-Driving suite in recent update

Tesla appears to be closing in on Elon Musk’s bold prediction that the electric car maker’s Full Self-Driving suite will be “feature-complete” by the end of the year. To become feature-complete, Tesla’s FSD suite must have the capability to navigate through city streets on its own, and it must be able to recognize stop signs, traffic lights, and other signages that it will encounter in inner-city driving.

A recent software update currently being released to the company’s fleet suggests that a feature-complete version of Full Self-Driving may indeed be rolled out to several members of Tesla’s early access program by the end of the year.

A number of Tesla owners with vehicles running the company’s NVIDIA hardware have started receiving the 2019.40.2 update. The update featured, apart from the usual improvements and bug fixes to Tesla’s software, a couple of features that will be extremely pertinent for inner-city driving. These are Adjacent Lane Speed Adjustments and Stop Sign Detection, two capabilities that would be invaluable for the company’s Full Self-Driving suite.

The following are the release notes for both of these features, as shared by the Tesla Riders Club on Twitter.

(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});

Adjacent Lane Speed Adjustments

“When your vehicle is moving at a significantly faster speed than vehicles in neighboring lanes, Autopilot now automatically reduces your driving speed. This is helpful in heavy traffic situations or when there is a long line of vehicles merging into a different lane or exiting onto an off-ramp. When your vehicle detects that adjacent lane traffic is significantly slower, the lane is highlighted with arrows and its vehicles are highlighted gray in the driving visualization. This speed adjustment can be temporarily overridden by pressing the accelerator pedal.”

Autosteer Stop Sign Warning

“Your car may warn you in some cases if it detects that you are about to run a stop sign, in addition to stop lights, while Autosteer is in use. This is not a substitute for an attentive driver and will not stop the car.”

Adjacent Lane Speed Adjustments will likely be very valuable for users of Tesla’s Navigate on Autopilot with automatic lane changes. This ultimately gives users a smoother experience while using Autopilot, while providing an additional layer of safety for drivers. Autosteer Stop Sign Warning is a great companion feature to a previously released feature that allowed Teslas to detect traffic lights and alert users if they are about to run a red light. The recognition of stop signs is also an encouraging improvement for the company’s Neural Network, which appears to be learning more and more of the intricacies of everyday driving.

(Credit: Tesla)

Elon Musk has stated that he believes Full Self-Driving could be feature-complete by the end of 2019, and it would likely be rolled out to a select number of Tesla owners who are part of the early access program. Musk clarified what feature complete really means during the third-quarter earnings call.

“Yeah, feature-complete, I mean, it’s — the car is able to drive from one’s house to work, most likely without interventions. So it will still be supervised, but it will be able to drive — it will fill in the gap from low-speed autonomy — low-speed autonomy with Summon. You’ve got high-speed autonomy on the highway, and intermediate speed autonomy, which really just means traffic lights and stop signs.

“So feature-complete means it’s most likely able to do that without intervention, without human intervention, but it would still be supervised. And I’ve gone through this timeline before several times, but it is often misconstrued that there’s three major levels to autonomy. There’s the car being able to be autonomous but requiring supervision and intervention at times. That’s feature complete. Then there’s — and it doesn’t mean like every scenario, everywhere on earth, including ever corner case, it just means most of the time,” Musk said.

SpaceX’s Crew Dragon parachutes are almost ready for NASA astronauts

SpaceX says Crew Dragon’s upgraded “Mk3” parachutes are almost ready to safely return astronauts to Earth and need to pass just a few more consecutive tests before NASA will have the data it needs to qualify them.

(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});

Although SpaceX originally hoped to pursue a program of propulsive landing for Crew Dragon and Cargo Dragon space capsules, that effort was canceled to avoid the major cost increases and delays NASA’s qualification certification requirements would have triggered. Already designed with parachutes as a backup, SpaceX quickly pivoted and redesigned those parachutes as the primary (if not sole) method of gently landing astronauts back on Earth.

That decision was likely made in late 2016 or early 2017 and CEO Elon Musk announced the program’s cancellation – as well as plans for “Red Dragon” Mars landings – in July 2017. For the next 18 months, SpaceX worked with suppliers and NASA to design and test a parachute system up to the space agency’s extremely rigid standards. Coincidentally, Cargo Dragon suffered a significant (but survivable) parachute failure the same year when one of its three main chutes failed to deploy before splashdown. Additionally, Crew Dragon’s first “Mk1” parachutes suffered their own failures during testing.

A Mk2 variant was designed and built to account for Mk1’s issues, but it too suffered failures during field tests, particularly struggling to make it through tests simulating the failure of one Dragon’s main parachutes. As a result, NASA further required SpaceX to add a fourth parachute, requiring a whole new round of tests and experimentation due to the significantly different dynamics it introduced. Mk2 testing continued into 2019 but SpaceX quickly switched gears and worked with its supplier to design an even more upgraded “Mk3” parachute, building off of a cutting-edge program to model parachute deployment more accurately than ever before.

Over the course of 2019, SpaceX began to extensively test Mk3 parachutes with a variety of drop tests. Unfortunately, even Mk3 suffered a failure or two at first, leading SpaceX and its supplier to refine the design even further.

“[In October and November,] SpaceX says it successfully completed thirteen consecutive tests of Crew Dragon’s new Mk3 parachutes in less than two weeks. That essentially blew [NASA administrator Jim] Bridenstine’s expectations out of the water, as SpaceX surpassed his predicted 10 tests and did so barely three weeks into the tentative 12-week window he set. SpaceX now has plenty of time to either continue testing Crew Dragon’s parachutes or refocus its efforts on other equally important qualification challenges.

Prior to those thirteen consecutive successes, SpaceX suffered two failures during single-parachute Mk3 testing. The first two development tests of the Mk 3 design used loads much higher than the parachutes would ever see in operation in an effort to better understand overall design margins and system performance. After a period of rapid iteration with parachute provider Airborne Systems, the faults responsible for those two stress-test failures were resolved and subsequent drop tests confirmed that Mk3’s suspension lines – the numerous lines connecting the parachute to Crew Dragon – are far stronger than those on Mk2.”

Teslarati — November 3rd, 2019

In the latest chapter of the Crew Dragon parachute saga, on December 4th, SpaceX tweeted that the spacecraft’s upgraded Mk3 chutes recently completed their seventh successful “system test”. On November 3rd, CEO Elon Musk tweeted that one such multi-chute test had already been completed but said SpaceX wanted to successfully complete ten such consecutive tests before it would feel fully confident in the upgraded parachutes.

Just four cool parachutes, hanging out. (SpaceX)

If the seven tests SpaceX is now describing are part of the same planned series that kicked off in early November, then those seven were likely consecutive successes and leave just three more tests (give or take) to go. Additional testing may well be required by SpaceX, NASA, or both parties, but if Mk3 continues to perform as well as it has over the last two months, Crew Dragon’s recovery systems ought to be well on their way to NASA certification. Once NASA gives the go-ahead on Crew Dragon’s parachutes (and every other facet of the spacecraft), SpaceX can proceed with its Demo-2 mission, set to be SpaceX’s inaugural astronaut launch and likely to mark the first time the US has launched its own astronauts in nearly nine years.

Tesla vandal poses for Sentry Mode before aggressively stabbing Model 3 tires

A new video has surfaced of a man in CA slashing a Tesla Model 3’s tire, leaving the impression that the vandalism incidents against all-electric vehicles is far from over.

A YouTube account by the name of Le Go posted a video on December 4 of a man stabbing one of his Model 3’s tires during a particularly rainy night. Interestingly, the vandal actually seemed like he was aware he was being recorded, looking directly at the Model 3’s side cameras before dropping his bags of groceries, pulling out his cell phone flashlight, and pulling out a pocket knife. He then proceeded to stab the Model 3’s tire multiple times.

The man did suspiciously look around for others in the area to make sure he was not being watched by anyone. Fortunately, the car he was vandalizing was capturing the entire act on camera with a clear image of his face.

The Tesla Model 3 owner provided some background on the incident in the description of his YouTube upload.

“The incident happened around 3 AM when the car was parked by the leasing office of a rental apartment community in Newport Beach, CA. When I found out one of the tires was flat on my way to work, I checked the recordings made by the car. Its Sentry mode saves videos of all suspicious activities around the car from 4 cameras, one on each side.

After I got a loaner wheel from Tesla I brought the evidence to the police station. I was told by the police that there were other cars in the same area which had their tires slashed the same night. Apparently, the crime was not Tesla-targeting, but it was a Tesla Model 3 which caught the suspect on camera. The investigation is ongoing. I will keep you posted. If you happen to know this guy, please call NBPD.”

In the past few months, Sentry Mode has captured many incidents of Tesla vehicles being targeted in attacks. The most popular form of vandalism is keying, but Sentry Mode and Tesla’s Dashcam have managed to capture many different forms of hazing, including a recent “Coal Roll” attack in Miami, Florida. Luckily, many of these culprits and perpetrators have been brought to justice.

The repeated targeting of these events is eye-opening for a community of people who are driving cars that help our environment. There is an evident hatred of electric vehicles by people, and the specific reasons are unknown. However, Sentry Mode gives Tesla owners the opportunity to capture the perpetrators on camera, an advantage that other car brands do not have.
