Tesla Model 3 SR+ owners to get heated rear seats through OTA update

Tesla will release an over-the-air software update to owners of the Model 3 Standard Range Plus variants, activating the vehicle’s heated rear seats to combat cold winter months.

The request came from Andrew Carney, a Model 3 Standard Range Plus owner who directly tweeted at Tesla CEO Elon Musk, stating that while he was extremely thankful for his vehicle and its constant improvements through software updates, it would be great if Tesla could release a “cold weather” upgrade to activate the all-electric car’s heated rear seats. Carney even noted that he wouldn’t mind it if the activation of the feature would be a paid update.

(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});

Musk simply replied, “Sure,” effectively confirming that the Standard Range Plus Model 3 will eventually have all its seats heated. This should offer extra amounts of comfort for passengers, particularly as temperatures in the Western Hemisphere begin to drop significantly due to the arrival of the winter months.

Tesla has only offered heated rear seats in Model 3 variants that include the company’s Premium Interior, the Long Range Dual Motor AWD and the Performance version. Vehicles like the Standard Range and Standard Range Plus Model 3 are equipped with a “Partial Premium” interior instead. The 12-way heated seats in the SR+ are only available to the driver and the front passenger, subjecting those sitting in the back to keep warm exclusively through the car’s climate control system. Thus, with rear seat heaters, the SR+ Model 3 will likely become an even more bang-for-your-buck vehicle.

That being said, some Model 3 Standard Range Plus owners have remarked that they have had access to rear-heated seats for a brief period of time. Tesla Motors Club member Stodium posted a thread on the popular forum, stating he was surprised to see the option for activating his car’s heated rear seats on his dash screen. The Model 3 owner described his experience as follows.

“Just picked up my SR+ and noticed when I clicked on the air unit, I have the option for heated seats in the front and rear. From my understanding, partial premium interior doesn’t include heated rear seats. Not that I’m complaining about the added feature, but is this associated with a software issue or did someone at the factory accidentally give me access to premium features somewhere down the line. Curious if anybody else has any similar experiences,” he said.

Details regarding price and the rollout date of the Standard Range Plus Model 3’s rear seats heater OTA update have not been released by the electric car maker.

Tesla Model Y spied on Fremont test rack, rips through track at full speed

Recent spy videos of the upcoming Tesla Model Y have shown the all-electric crossover ripping through the Fremont factory’s test track like a supercar, despite rain and heavy winds. The speed of the Model Y is quite astounding, considering that its Performance variant has the most conservative specs among the vehicles donning Tesla’s “P” branding.

Two videos of the Model Y in Fremont’s test track were recently shared online. One, which featured a whole minute of the crossover gliding smoothly over the closed circuit, was filmed from a distance. Despite this, one can feel the hard acceleration of the Tesla Model Y as it launched from a dead stop. It remains unknown which variant of the Model Y was used for the session, but it would not be a surprise if it was a Performance version, considering its almost supercar-esque acceleration.

(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});

Apart from the aerial shot of the all-electric seven-seat crossover, a closer view of the Model Y’s trip to the track was shared by Global Equities Research analyst Trip Chowdhry, who recently visited Tesla’s Fremont facility for a factory check. The analyst noted that he saw the Model Y for the first time during the December 7 visit, and it was also the first time that he saw the vehicle at the track.

In a statement to Street Insider, Chowdhry stated that the Model Y was going at “super-high speeds during rain and heavy winds.” This was evident in his short video, which showed overcast skies and an all-electric crossover that was unforgivingly accelerating (seemingly) at full speed. Overall, Chowdhry came away from the sighting impressed, stating that what he saw was a “significant” development.

The Global Equities Research analyst stated that the Model Y’s full speed track sessions hint that the development of the upcoming vehicle is going as planned. Chowdhry added that he sees the Model Y becoming a significant revenue contributor for Tesla in the second half of 2020. The analyst’s observations seem to go in line with other sightings of the all-electric crossover in the United States. From CA to OH, the Model Y has been spotted in its different versions, including a Dual Motor AWD unit that was spotted with a tow hitch.

The Model Y could very well be Tesla’s dark horse for the coming year. The vehicle’s unveiling was understated, and Elon Musk gave a pretty conservative estimate on its first deliveries, stating that first handovers to customers will likely begin in Fall 2020. In the Q3 2019 Update Letter, Tesla announced that Model Y development was ahead of schedule, and that first deliveries will likely be held on Summer 2020 instead. Considering all these sightings and track tests, it would not be surprising if the Model Y’s deliveries end up being even earlier than expected.

Tesla (TSLA) shows strength amid analyst’s 1k Model Y weekly production update

Tesla shares (NASDAQ:TSLA) are up as a longtime bull provided a quick update on the upcoming Model Y crossover, stating that the electric car maker plans to produce 1,000 units of the vehicle per week to start. This is a bit conservative considering the current weekly output of the Model 3, but it hints at Tesla’s more deliberate approach with its production and delivery forecasts.

Baird analyst Ben Kallo recently toured Tesla’s Fremont factory together with several other investors. The tour was supervised by the electric car maker, but the analyst did provide a number of new details about the company’s preparations for the production of the Model Y

The analyst mentioned that investors in the tour were able to get a glimpse of giant presses “stamping aluminum body panels and robots picking batteries and placing them into battery packs that power the electric vehicles.” Interestingly, it was also mentioned that different Tesla vehicles currently run on the same assembly line, providing the company with flexibility in its vehicle production process. The Model Y will reportedly be included in this line when it enters production.

(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});

Kallo also stated that Tesla will aim to produce 1,000 Model Y per week once the vehicle enters production. This is quite conservative for Tesla, especially since the company is already producing the Model 3 at scale in both the Fremont factory and Gigafactory 3 in Shanghai, China. The Model Y and Model 3 share about 75% of their components, after all, and thus, expectations for the Y’s ramp have been quite optimistic.

Tesla made a mistake by setting hyper-aggressive targets for the Model 3 ramp in the past. After the vehicle’s initial deliveries in mid-2017, Elon Musk announced that Tesla will attempt to hit a production rate of 2,500 Model 3 per week by the end of the year. This target was reached at the end of Q2 2018, translating to a six-month delay. With this in mind, it appears that Tesla is taking a more cautious approach with its Model Y targets.

This ultimately bodes well for the electric car maker. Over-promising and under-delivering in deliveries and production have been an Achilles Heel for Tesla for far too long, and little by little, the company appears to be learning how to do the opposite. This was shown in Tesla’s forecasts with the Model Y, with Musk initially announcing a Fall 2020 delivery date for the vehicle. Tesla has since moved this estimate up to Summer 2020, but if recent reports are any indication, the all-electric crossover may start deliveries even earlier

With the Model Y, Tesla seems to be intent on under-promising and over-delivering. And considering that the vehicle has the potential to outsell the Model S, Model X, and Model 3 combined, this cautious approach may very well prove to be a masterstroke for the electric car maker.

As of writing, Tesla stock is trading +1.87% at $359.30 per share.

Disclosure: I have no ownership in shares of TSLA and have no plans to initiate any positions within 72 hours.

Tesla Gigafactory 4 complex to include on-site train station: report

Tesla Gigafactory 4 may have its own train station, based on recent reports from Germany.

German publication Bild recently shared what appeared to be the layout of Gigafactory 4, which will be built in Brandenburg, a town roughly an hour east of Berlin. The image depicted several parts of the upcoming facility, including its battery and drivetrain assembly, seat assembly, and final assembly area. It also showed a train station and a possible Autobahn exit.

Tesla has not confirmed if Bild‘s information about Gigafactory Berlin is accurate, but if it holds water, the upcoming facility may very well prove to be one of the company’s most efficient factories yet. A train station provides the company with easy transportation of cargo and materials, while access to the Autobahn will allow easy deliveries of vehicles. Workers from nearby cities would likely find it easier to get to the facility as well.

(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});

Below is a quick translation of the labels on the factory layout above as shared by Twitter user @xDreamCoding.

Recent job postings hint that the electric car manufacturer may plan to produce its own battery cells in the upcoming facility. According to the listing, Tesla is looking for a senior process engineering lead who will be able to help create “novel detailed designs for a wide range of systems from electrolyte to high purity water, involving unit operations such as pump and compressor systems, reverse osmosis, distillation, heat transfer fluid systems, etc.”

The plans to build the Gigafactory 4 were first revealed by Tesla CEO Elon Musk in November when he visited Germany to attend the Golden Steering Wheel Awards. Latest reports suggest that Tesla will build around 500,000 units annually in the 741-acre European facility with a focus on the Model Y crossover and the Model 3 sedan.

The purchase contract for the Gigafactory Berlin site is expected to be completed before the end of the year with a meeting of the Finance Committee set to be held as early as Dec. 17 or 18, according to Katrin Lange, Finance Minister of Brandenburg. Brandenburg Mayor Arne Christiani has also welcomed the developments, stating during an interview that Gigafactory 4 is “a unique opportunity for the region and for Brandenburg.”

The local government has also formed a special task force to ensure that the project proceeds smoothly and quickly.

Local newspapers reported that the electric vehicle maker will be pouring  $4.41 billion into the factory that will also help boost the country’s economy. The new facility is expected to create 3,000 jobs initially, eventually ramping all the way to 8,000.

Tesla critic Jim Cramer turns into full-on bull: ‘TSLA has all the ingredients of a winner’

Tesla has a new convert as tough critic Jim Cramer of CNBC’s Mad Money turns from an agnostic skeptic to an outright bull on the electric carmaker’s stock (NASDAQ:TSLA). The Mad Money host declared that he is now a true believer in Tesla, which he classifies as a battleground stock.

“All my career I have been fascinated by companies with vociferous bulls and ferocious bears, if only because they can be so entertaining,” Cramer said.

For the uninitiated, battleground stocks are those that attract strong, polarizing opinions from different sides. “First, they are cultish, meaning that there are people who love the product, not the earnings and the product transcends simple analysis. You can’t put a price to earnings ratio on cool, on but you might buy cool and therefore want to buy the stock. That had been my stance for years on Tesla,” said Cramer.

Cramer shared a story of how his wife and daughter helped convinced him to believe in Tesla. About three months ago, his daughter drove a Model 3 from Oregon to San Francisco. Within 100 miles of the 600-mile trip, he was surprised to get a call from his daughter, who was raving about how it was nice being behind the wheel of the electric vehicle. His daughter told him to “buy one.”

(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});

On another occasion, Cramer was with his wife and they tried a Model X following an endorsement from another couple. He confessed that he adored the Falcon Wing doors and the quality of the drive. Cramer’s wife also convinced him to buy Tesla’s Solar Roof. The unveiling of the Tesla Cybertruck also caught the attention of Cramer. While he labeled the press conference as close to a disaster following the vehicle’s failed “Armor Glass” demo, the demand following the unveiling of the all-electric pickup truck stunned the TV personality.

The second issue, according to Cramer, about battleground stocks is their financials. “The really Verdun-like slugfests tend to have terrible balance sheets, ones that can’t be fixed by simple operating earnings and instead need genuine manna from heaven to cure themselves of the concerns,” Cramer said.

However, he consulted one of the most skeptical CFOs in the world, who said this about Tesla. “The company could raise two billion dollars in a heartbeat,” he said. Cramer took note of how even TSLA bears recognize that Tesla may have a breakout as soon as next year.

Lastly, the former hedge fund manager considered how battleground stocks tend to have charismatic leaders.

The Mad Money host weighed in  how Tesla CEO Elon Musk fascinates him. “He’s a walking charisma machine, alternately entertaining and fun-loving and critical to the point of scathing, like someone else I know, yours truly. Sometimes I think he gives me a run for my money as the most sincerely insincere man in North America, other times he’s just a worldwide true believer,” he said.

(Credit: Jay In Shanghai/Twitter)

Cramer dislikes Musk for tweeting like crazy and how the Tesla CEO taunted analysts, though he stated that he has since tempered down his stance. “All of that ended though when he agreed as part of some weirdo SEC ruling to stop the incendiary tweeting and, on the last conference call he revealed his true rigor without the sardonic quips. That made me realize that he will have no problem negotiating with either the Chinese government for his Gigafactory built in record time or the coming gargantuan German factory for that matter,” Cramer noted.

To end, the Mad Money host summarized his points, “So, cult product? Check. Balance sheet? Check. Leader? Check. If you’re going to invest in a battleground stock, TSLA has all the ingredients of a winner.”

As Cramer announced his conversion to a TSLA believer, others have corroborated his analysis. ARK Invest founder and CEO Catherine Wood foresees Tesla stock to at least double by 2024. “We have our ‘bear price,’ five-year target as $700. That would be if they lost two-thirds of market shares and had no autonomous vehicles,” she said in an interview.

Last month, Canadian businessman and Shark Tank judge Kevin O’Leary, who has also been critical of Tesla stock, also changed his stance and invested in the electric car maker after seeing a potential path to profitability.

TSLA stock has also been showing some strength following the positive reports from China hinting that the deliveries of Made-in-China Model 3 units are imminent. Interest in the Tesla Cybertruck has also remained strong weeks after its unveiling.

On Wednesday, Tesla shares closed at $352.70, gaining 1.11%.

Here’s the full video of the Mad Money segment where host Jim Cramer explained how he became a true believer in Tesla:

SpaceX Cargo Dragon spacecraft arrives at space station on second to last mission

SpaceX’s Cargo Dragon has successfully rendezvoused with the International Space Station (ISS) as part of NASA’s CRS-19 resupply mission, marking what is almost certainly the spacecraft’s second to last orbital launch.

On December 5th, new Falcon 9 booster B1059 lifted off from SpaceX’s LC-40 Cape Canaveral Air Force Station (CCAFS) launch pad with a fresh upper stage and twice flown Cargo Dragon capsule C106 atop it. A little over nine minutes after launch, B1059 prepared to be robotically secured on drone ship Of Course I Still Love You (OCISLY) while Cargo Dragon – now in orbit – separated from Falcon 9’s upper stage and headed on its merry way.

Cargo Dragon’s 20th orbital mission and 19th trip to the ISS, CRS-19’s twice-flown spacecraft commanded the deployment of its two solar arrays, primed its Draco maneuvering thrusters, and opened up its Guidance, Navigation, and Control (GNC) bay. Using star trackers, inertial measurement devices, and lasers, Dragon then proceeded to precisely deliver itself to the ‘door’ of the space station before gradually approaching.

(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});

Astronauts aboard the ISS then manually guided Canadarm2 – a massive robotic arm externally attached to the space station – towards Cargo Dragon as it used its thrusters to essentially hover in place, ultimately grabbing the spacecraft with a sort of mechanical hand. At that point, Dragon effectively became a part of the ISS and astronauts monitored the subsequent (and mostly automated) process of using Canadarm2 to fully berth spacecraft with the station.

After berthing, astronauts are able to equalize the pressure between the ISS and visiting spacecraft and open the hatch, gaining access to whatever cargo it was loaded with prior to launch. Alternatively, visiting vehicles can also dock with the International Space Station, a process controlled entirely by the arriving spacecraft, a bit like berthing but with almost all of the risk on its shoulders. All Russian spacecraft currently use this method, as do Boeing’s Starliner and SpaceX’s Crew Dragon.

Crew Dragon relies on its International Docking Adapter to mate with the ISS, sidestepping the need for robotic arm capture. (SpaceX)

As it turns out, CRS-19 – partially hinted at in the name – is the second to last launch of SpaceX’s Dragon 1 (Cargo Dragon), which become the first commercial spacecraft capable of reentering Earth’s atmosphere in 2010 and rendezvousing with a space station in 2012. Five months later, SpaceX launched CRS-1 – its first operational resupply mission – and the rest is (more or less) history.

In the seven years since CRS-1, Cargo Dragon – including CRS-19 – has now flown 18 successful space station resupply missions and delivered more than 90,000 lb (50,000 kg) to its ever-changing crew of astronauts. Cargo Dragon has undergone at least two significant upgrades and suffered its fair share of mishaps, but has still successfully completed its mission every time it reached orbit.

NASA’s CRS1 SpaceX contract ultimately called for a total of 20 Cargo Dragon missions to the ISS, although more could technically be added retroactively if both entities were to decide they were needed. Currently, the plan is for CRS-20 – Cargo Dragon’s next launch – to be the spacecraft’s last orbital mission and is scheduled no earlier than March 2020.

After CRS-20, SpaceX – via its subsequent CRS2 NASA contract – means to introduce a version of Crew Dragon (Dragon 2) modified for cargo-only missions, optimally taking flight-proven Crew capsules and reusing them as Cargo Dragon 2s.

An overview of the expected modifications needed to turn a Crew Dragon into a Cargo Dragon 2. (NASA OIG)

SpaceX recently revealed that the first Cargo Dragon 2 spacecraft will unexpectedly not feature Crew Dragon’s complex SuperDraco abort system, a feature that has recently created several roadblocks. However, this dramatically simplifies Dragon 2 and means that SpaceX is still quite confident that the upgraded cargo spacecraft will be ready for its launch debut next year.

Known as CRS-21, that mission will see SpaceX’s CRS launches move from LC-40 to Kennedy Space Center’s LC-39A pad in order to enable extremely late and convenient cargo-loading via Pad 39A’s Crew Access Arm (CAA), to be primarily used by astronauts boarding Crew Dragon. Similarly, Cargo Dragon 2 will dock with the ISS instead of using Dragon’s current berthing route, nominally requiring less hands-on astronaut time for each resupply mission.

Cargo Dragon will be missed but will forever remain a major piece of commercial spaceflight history. Dragon 2 will likely toe the line for the first half of the next decade, but SpaceX ultimately wants to get its generation Starship launch vehicle online as soon as possible – a feat that will make all Falcon and Dragon vehicles redundant if things go as planned.

Tesla Model S becomes LAPD Hollywood Division’s latest patrol car

Tesla Model S in traditional black-and-white paint will serve as one of the patrol cars of the Los Angeles Police Department Division as the police force increases efforts to become more environmentally conscious.

The LAPD announced the move on its Twitter account, with Captain Steve Lurie inviting citizens to say hi if they spot them cruising in the department’s Tesla Model S patrol car.

The division also jokingly warned everyone about how fast their new electric patrol car is and to avoid running away. “We weren’t kidding! Hollywood Division just got our hands on the department Tesla to test out for the next few months! If you see this thing behind you don’t even try and run!”

“No, we will not be utilizing Ludicrous Mode!”

The LAPD did not mention if there were modifications made to fit the vehicle with necessary police equipment.

(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});

The latest announcement of the LAPD coincides with the Tesla Model 3 patrol car reveal of the Westport Police Department in Connecticut. The all-electric police cruiser will begin active duty in January and joins Ford Explorers of the fleet. The department also plans to install a charging station at its headquarters.

Tesla police cars are nothing new in California, just like LAPD which tries to lower its carbon footprint, the Fremont Police Department also added a modified 2014 Model S 85 to their fleet of patrol cars.

Likewise, a police department in the town of Bargersville in Indiana also added a Tesla Model 3 to their patrol fleet in August. This electric patrol car joined four Dodge Chargers with the primary aim of reducing operation cost sans fuel and maintenance usually involved in gas-powered patrol cars.

Teslas do not just magnet the attention of the local police departments but also attracts the attention of foreign police forces.

Luxembourg acquired two Tesla Model S high-speed police cruisers in 2018 that are primarily used as quick-response vehicles.

Without any surprise, the Tesla Cybertruck is also beginning to attract attention as a potential police vehicle. Dubai authorities have signified interest to add the dystopian all-electric truck to its police patrol fleet. The mayor of a town in Mexico also expressed his interest to get the Cybertruck for his police force and to use it for some heavy tasks such as pulling water pipes or even garbage containers.

Tesla to increase imported Model 3 prices in China: report

Tesla will reportedly up the prices of imported Model 3 vehicles in China starting in January 2020.

The move affects imported Model 3 Performance and Model 3 Long Range that is currently priced in China at roughly $72,400 and $62,500, respectively, according to a report by Reuters quoting unnamed sources.

The price increase comes amid news that Made-in-China (MIC) Model 3 first customer deliveries are imminent and this strategy can be seen as a way to encourage the greater Chinese electric vehicle market to purchase the more affordable and locally-assembled Model 3 units.

Earlier reports say that Tesla plans to sell the MIC Model 3 units for $50,000 while government subsidies can potentially save consumers around $3,500 after China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology included two variants of the Model 3 on the list of new electric vehicles qualified to receive incentives. The locally-made Model 3 units will most likely be Model 3 Standard units that do not come without Autopilot and a Standard Range Plus that comes with basic Autopilot.

(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});

As Tesla China prepares initial deliveries of locally-made Model 3 vehicles, the electric car manufacturer updated its China-specific Model 3 configurator and removed the phrase in Chinese that reads “MIC Model 3 is subject to regulatory approval.”

Prior to the website update, transport trucks carrying MIC Model 3 units were seen leaving the Gigafactory Shanghai where they are produced. The parking lot of the production facility also quickly filled up with Model 3 days after Tesla secured a permit to sell.

Gigafactory 3 construction started in January and Tesla was able to ready its production lines after 10 months and in November, Tesla released the first official images of MIC Model 3 units sporting a badge in Chinese characters that mean Tesla on its left rear while donning a Model 3 bad on the right rear.

Tesla’s entry into China, the biggest automotive market in the world, serves as an acid test to CEO Elon Musk who wants to prove that the brand can sustain profitability in the global market.

In 2017, Chinese consumers bought 777,000 electric vehicles and these numbers jumped to  1.1 million in 2018, or roughly more than 55 percent of EVs sold across the globe. While the sales of electric cars in China dropped earlier this year, the sales of automobiles will rebound come 2020 as automakers including, Tesla, roll out new products and as more supportive government policies come into play. Local manufacturers see the entry of China as a catalyst to lure in more consumers to the electric vehicle segment.

Tesla looks to add HBO, Twitch, and more video streaming apps to in-car entertainment

Tesla owners may soon have HBOGo, HBO Now, Comedy Central, Twitch, Crunchyroll, and a number of other streaming apps in their in-car entertainment system. Tesla owner and hacker @greentheonly spotted the unused assets in the carmaker’s operating system and he’s predicting that these streaming apps may roll out in an upcoming software update, perhaps sooner rather than later.

Aside from the streaming apps mentioned above, the links also include video game streaming platforms Twitch and Mixer, and there are also Chinese video streaming services such as Tencent, YouKu, and iQiyi. Green also spotted Monty Python, which already pops up as an Easter Egg with V10 provided that Tesla owners rename their vehicles after characters in the iconic comedy franchise.

As Tesla continues to bolster its roster of games and video streaming apps, the electric car maker is creating an ecosystem for in-car entertainment that will only scale into the future. Beyond the benefit of creating an additional revenue stream from a ‘Premium Connectivity’ subscription plan, having popular consumer services easily accessible will emphasize an unparalleled level of in-car entertainment experience.

(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});

With the release of more streaming services for Tesla’s in-car entertainment, users will likely consume more data on the go, and this is where Tesla’s new “Premium Connectivity” service becomes pertinent.  While it will set back customers roughly $10 a month, Premium Connectivity allows access to popular in-car features such as video streaming, Caraoke, music streaming, and internet browser even when Wi-Fi is not available. Tesla has started emailing customers about their in-car data subscription. Premium Connectivity expiration warnings via Software Menu have also been reported on vehicles’ displays.

In a previous statement, managing director at Wedbush Securities and Tesla analyst Dan Ives said that the electric carmaker is bringing the infotainment center into a whole new level, putting the company miles ahead of other manufacturers. “Consumers are used to the technologies they see in their smartphone, they see in their living room, but yet they go into their automobile and they have a flashback to 1988. They want the technology that they see in 2019 in their car,” Ives said in an interview

During an earnings call, Elon Musk admitted that Tesla has not really thought of a way to monetize in-car entertainment. Nevertheless, Brian Moody of Autotrader said that this might not be the case in the future, especially when infotainment systems will likely become one of the biggest factors in the economics of automakers. “As the driver becomes less necessary, there will be more options for in-car purchases and partnering with outside vendors so that you can buy stuff from inside the car, probably even buy stuff for the car from inside the car,” Moody said.

As we see Tesla add more features and services to its in-car entertainment system, the brand will have the opportunity to explore the possibilities of using their vehicles as a platform to deliver services that consumers are willing to spend on. As Will Kaufman of Edmunds suggests, “If Tesla gets to the point where they’re moving millions of units annually, their control over their platform gives them leverage.” And that only means one thing for Tesla — more $$$ to attain its ambitious goals.

Tesla Cybertruck ‘Boat Mode’ grants Elon Musk’s amphibious car dreams in fan-made render

A three-dimensional rendering of the Tesla Cybertruck floating in the ocean has emerged on Instagram showing a man in the truck’s “vault”, enjoying a day on the water in a futuristic car-boat.

The video by hypercarislands gives passionate fishermen an idea of how Tesla’s first pickup could double as an amphibious car in “Boat Mode.” The man in the back of the Cybertruck in the rendering is visibly happy, enjoying beautiful weather while catching fish in a floating Tesla.

Underwater vehicles are something Musk has been vocal about in the past, especially when it comes to the idea of a submarine car. While Tesla vehicles in the past have performed impressively when confronted with deep water, no Tesla vehicle has ever taken on a body of water as large as an ocean.

After a Model S easily navigated through a flooded tunnel in Almaty, Kazakhstan in 2016, Musk tweeted that while “We *def* don’t recommend this, but Model S floats well enough to turn it into a boat for short periods of time. Thrust via wheel rotation.” In May 2019, another Model S “floated” through a flooded neighborhood somewhere in the United States.

During the annual Shareholder meeting in 2019, Musk shared Tesla’s design for an all-electric submarine vehicle, much like the one from the 1977 James Bond film, “The Spy Who Loved Me,” recognized as “Wet Nellie.” Musk enjoyed the idea of an underwater vehicle so much, purchased the car, a Lotus Espirit S1, in 2013 for £550,000.

After being asked by an individual shareholder if the company would ever develop and release a car that would work underwater, Musk said, “You can actually have a submarine car — it’s like technically possible. I think the market for this will be small. Small but enthusiastic. It would be a bit of a distraction but maybe we’ll make one as a show car.”

A man of many passions, Musk has successfully created a car company that produces high-performance electric vehicles, and a separate entity responsible for sending ships into outer space. With that information, it seems completely feasible that the head of Tesla and SpaceX could create a car, or boat, that would operate in water deep enough to fish in. While much of the world is still taking in the Cybertruck and its many features, it is unlikely it will be the subject of a redesign making it optimal for a day out on the water.
