Tesla Model Y rendered to life as anticipation mounts for official unveiling

Tesla community members have taken it upon themselves to bring the Model Y to life ahead of Thursday’s official unveiling event.

Redditor J380 shared a rather lifelike Model Y rendering that took an image of a Model 3 and stretched its proportions over Tesla’s teaser image of the upcoming all-electric crossover. By transposing Model 3’s headlight and roofline to an image of Model Y’s silhouette, and one might be able to visualize a vehicle that somewhat resembles a miniature version of a Model X.

The second photo shared by another Reddit user “filled in” the same shadowy email-sourced pic, portraying the crossover EV with a wider hood and curvier overall appearance than the Model 3-based render. That same image was then further altered to brighten the appearance, increasing overall visibility.

This isn’t the first time the Tesla community has taken to Photoshop to render a Model Y to life. Motivated by a similar teaser image that was first shared by Tesla CEO Elon Musk in 2018, Tesla enthusiast and graphic artist Miguel Massé envisioned a crossover with generous ground clearance and an aggressive stance. Massé also imagined a $25,000 Tesla subcompact sedan, first mentioned by Musk during an exclusive interview with tech reviewer and social media influencer MKBHD.

(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});

Tesla Model Y is expected to generate more demand than Model 3 and sell at a rate of nearly 1 million units per year. According to Musk, Model Y will also have far lower production costs than any other vehicle in its fleet and achieve a rapid production ramp based on it sharing 75% of its components with Model 3. Previously, the company had planned on building the crossover on a completely new architecture and from a dedicated factory, but after Tesla’s executive team brought Musk back from the “cliffs of insanity“, it was decided that the Model 3 would be the core architecture for the new vehicle.

The Model Y is set to be unveiled on March 14th via a livestreamed event. Keeping with the pattern of prior company events, the Tesla community has further speculated that more than just the new vehicle will be announced. Some suggestions have included the company’s all-electric pickup truck as a bonus reveal. Supercharger V3 stations have also been spotted being installed at the LA Design Center, leading to speculation that the Model Y will be able to support a charge rate of 1000 miles per hour.

Tesla installing Supercharger V3 at LA Design Center ahead of Model Y event

Tesla is installing a number of Supercharger V3 stations at the LA Design Center ahead of the upcoming Model Y unveiling event this coming Thursday.

Photos taken of the ongoing buildout reveal that the new charging stalls are replacing a bank of existing V2 Superchargers. Most of the area is effectively closed off, and sources familiar with the ongoing construction have told Teslarati that the chargers being built at the Design Center are indeed V3 stalls.

Following are some pictures of the ongoing Supercharger V3 buildout at the LA Design Center.

(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});

The presence of the new liquid-cooled chargers will likely play a role in the upcoming Model Y unveiling event. Just like the Model 3, Model Y units that will be used by the company in test drives during the launch will likely be able to support Supercharger V3’s 250 kW power output and charge at 1000 miles per hour.

Tesla’s third-generation, high-power charger for long distance was launched last week, with the company pleasantly surprising the electric car community with a new charging infrastructure’s specs. The first station, installed at the company’s Fremont-based Supercharger station on Kato road, is one of several that Tesla will be installing throughout California. Supercharger V3 stations also boast a notable improvement over V2 in the way that they no longer need to split power with neighboring vehicles.

“Supercharger stations with V3 hardware are designed to enable any owner to charge at the full power their battery can take – no more splitting power with another vehicle connected to your cabinet. This combination of higher peak power and dedicated vehicle power allocation across the site enables you to charge in half the time,” notes Tesla in the latest over-the-air software update to owners in their Early Access Program.

This results in faster charging times for Tesla owners, with the company estimating that up to 75 miles of range could be replenished in just five minutes. This makes it far easier for members of the Tesla community to go through long trips, as their stops will be shorter with the V3 in place. The faster charging rate also allows more vehicles to be charged per site, which helps the company support an ever-growing fleet. With high-volume vehicles like the $35,000 Model 3 entering the picture, the advantages of V3’s speed will likely become evident.

Supercharger V3 is seeing an initial rollout today, and reports from the Tesla community point to the company not retrofitting its existing network with V3 hardware. This does not mean that there will be no improvements to the current Superchargers, as Tesla has announced that it will be unlocking 145kW charge rates at over 12,000 V2 stations across the world within the coming weeks.

Rivian swappable components come to life in new renderings

The new (and patient) Rivian community has taken a recently published company patent one step further from its concept drawings by creating beautifully colored “digital previews” to bring its described “swappable” modules to life. In five renderings, the team running RivianForums imagined a basic flatbed, two recreational caps/toppers, a side rail module (with and without dirtbikes), and a cargo box utility module.

The patent in question presented a customizable, modular concept for its cars: As imagined, cargo bed components can be swapped out per driver preference, and the cars automatically adjust to whatever is installed. Whether the driver needs a set up for delivery, recreation, etc., there’s a modular component specially designed to provide a solution.

It certainly seems that the Michigan-based company’s portrayal of its vehicles as part of an “electric adventure” lifestyle has been happily taken up by its fast-growing fan base; a narrative wherein nature beckons the thrill-seeking traveler to muddy the wheels of their battery-powered Rivian R1T truck or R1S SUV.

Last week, the company’s official Twitter account shared a personality-filled photo of an R1T sitting inside their Plymouth location with a caption stating it was “smiling for the camera”. The subsequent responses to the image further demonstrated an audience excited for Rivian’s future.

A sign above the overhead door behind the happy R1T tweet-pic read, “Of all the paths you take in life, make sure a few are dirt”, which is of course very much in line with the feeling Rivian has been promoting. The EV startup recently posted a mood-inspiring series of cinematic videos chock-full of snow, mountain, and trail imagery. It seems that after nine years in stealth mode, this up-and-coming auto maker really wants everyone to keep the idea of an outdoors + EV lifestyle fresh in their minds with Rivian at the helm. They’ve even adopted the #electricadventure hashtag to go with it, and a quick search for the tag generates results full of impressive and exciting images of Rivian’s vehicle lineup that’s set to begin production next year.

(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});

The Rivian R1T and R1S have been designed with “megapack” batteries to provide up to 400 miles per charge, and their high-powered quad-motors have been touted to give a 0-60 mph acceleration time of 3 seconds. To support the flexible, adventurous lifestyle of its target market, Rivian has also been developing longer range power solutions for its vehicles, as seen by another recent patent application. For a starting price of $69,000 for the R1T pickup and $72,500 for the R1S SUV before incentives, Rivian’s customers will be treated to both innovative new electric vehicles and a company committed to supporting their travel-centered lifestyle.

As with Tesla orders, a $1000 deposit via Rivian’s official website will secure a prospective buyer’s place in line for one of the company’s outdoor-focused vehicles. Also keeping in line with what customers have somewhat come to expect during the vehicle pre-order process, Rivian has also begun offering perks as a reward for buyers’ vote of confidence. An invite went out to their “preorder community” this week to attend a private vehicle viewing and celebration in a run-up to the company’s appearance at the 2019 New York International Auto Show. Cocktails, hors d’oeuvres, and a greeting by the company’s CEO and founder, RJ Scaringe, were promised to be part of the event.

Elon Musk and Tesla’s legal team take a stand against SEC in bold response

Elon Musk and his legal team are taking a stand against the Securities and Exchange Commission’s (SEC) motion to hold the CEO in contempt of court.

Responding to an imposed March 11 deadline by U.S. District Judge Alison Nathan, Musk’s legal team argued that the CEO’s actions on Twitter did not violate his previous settlement with the SEC at all. The filing also argues that Musk correctly used his discretion to determine that the February 19 tweet did not contain information that could be reasonably considered material to Tesla. Instead, the tweet and its following clarification are better understood as a “proud and optimistic restatement of publicly disclosed information.”

Musk’s legal team not that the Tesla CEO had significantly cut back his Tesla-related Twitter habits following his settlement with the SEC last year, showing that he is taking the terms of his agreement seriously. The lawyers also pointed out that the SEC’s interpretation of its settlement with Musk raises First Amendment issues.

(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});

“The Order as the SEC interprets it would raise serious First Amendment issues and implicate other constitutional rights. The SEC seeks to rewrite the Order to eliminate Musk’s discretion, effectively requiring Musk to seek pre-approval of any tweet that relates to Tesla, regardless of its significance, prior dissemination, or nature. Such a broad prior restraint would violate the First Amendment. Moreover, the SEC seeks to procure through a contempt proceeding enforcement power that is far broader and less clearly defined than the power Congress has granted it via statute. The Court should construe the Order narrowly to avoid applying it in a way that would raise significant constitutional concerns,” Musk’s lawyers wrote.

Musk’s legal team further pointed to the SEC’s mention of the CEO’s 60 Minutes interview, where he stated that he respects the law but not the SEC, as a sign that the agency appears to be retaliating against Musk. “This contempt action, following Musk’s sincerely-held criticism of the SEC on 60 Minutes, also reflects concerning and unprecedented overreach on the part of the SEC,” Musk’s lawyers added.

Elon Musk’s strong response to the SEC will likely be polarizing. Musk and the SEC have butted heads in the past, and each time it happened, TSLA stock was affected. When the SEC asked a judge to hold Musk in contempt on February 26, Tesla stock was adversely affected, plummeting over 3% after-hours after the announcement. Ironically, Musk’s Twitter announcement on February 19 did not appear to affect the company’s stock at all, as the posts were uploaded after trading hours.

The SEC’s recent row with Elon Musk started after the CEO posted a series of tweets on February 19. In one of the posts, Musk stated that “Tesla made 0 cars in 2011, but will make around 500k in 2019.”  A few hours later, Musk posted a clarification, stating “meant to say annualized production rate at end of 2019 probably around 500k, i.e., 10k cars/week. Deliveries for (the) year still estimated to be about 400k.” The figures were mentioned by Musk during Tesla’s first-quarter earnings call when he stated that Tesla could probably produce “maybe in the order of 350,000 to 500,000 Model 3s” this 2019.

Elon Musk’s response to the SEC’s recent request to hold him in contempt could be accessed here.

Tesla’s electric cars are well-loved by owners, but service network needs work: survey

A recent survey among Tesla owners has shown that while the company’s electric cars are definitely well-loved, the electric car maker has notable areas of improvement with regards to its service network.

The annual survey was conducted by Bernstein, and this year, it involved input from 2018 Tesla owners. The study showed that 87% of the respondents admitted that they “love” their vehicles, a slight rise over the previous year’s 85%. More than 2/3 of the owners surveyed this year also stated that they bought an electric car to replace a “mainstream” vehicle, suggesting that Tesla is starting to make some waves beyond the luxury market.

While Tesla’s vehicles are well-loved by their owners, the company does have areas of improvement in its service network. Bernstein analyst Toni Sacconaghi outlined these points in a note to clients on Monday. “Tesla’s service and customer experience remain a relative weak spot, with little improvement in most areas and deterioration in several metrics versus our survey results from 2017,” he wrote.

(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});

According to the results of the survey, 42% of the respondents rated their service center experience as “excellent.” This represents a 15% decline over the previous year’s results, when 57% of the surveyed Tesla owners gave an “excellent” rating for their service center experience. Particularly telling is that respondents who visited the company’s service centers in the last three months were less satisfied with their experience due to issues such as longer wait times.

In contrast to the owners’ ratings for Tesla’s service network, the company’s mobile service received a very positive response among the participants of Bernstein’s survey, with 70% of respondents rating their experience as “excellent.”

As the company’s fleet of vehicles grows with the introduction of high-volume electric cars like the $35,000 Model 3 and the Model Y, Tesla rolled out initiatives to improve its customers’ service experience. Last year, the company opened in-house body shops in a number of locations across the United States, which allowed minor repairs to be addressed more efficiently. Earlier this month, Tesla also rolled out an update to its mobile app that showed owners live status updates on the work being done on their vehicles.

Tesla has further committed to increasing its investment in its service system until it can deliver same-day, if not same-hour turnaround times for customer concerns. The company outlined this in a blog post when it announced the $35,000 Model 3. “Most service (will be) done by us coming to you, rather than you coming to us. Moreover, we guarantee service availability anywhere in any country in which we operate,” the company wrote.

Bernstein has a “Perform” rating on Tesla stock (NASDAQ:TSLA), with a price target of $325 per share.

Tesla Model S and X owners face discrimination at dealer-run auto show

A number of Tesla owners are calling foul on the organizers of the 2019 Kansas City Auto Show after the event’s organizers, the Automobile Dealers Association of Greater Kansas City (ADAKC), showed discrimination against a Model S and Model X by forcing the electric cars out of the event.

The annual exhibition is being held at the Bartle Hall convention center, and since the auto show itself did not fill the entire venue, the ADAKC allocated the south end of the exhibit hall to the Kansas City Auto Museum. The museum reached out to the local auto enthusiast community to look for volunteers who wish to display their vehicles as part of the event. Numerous locals answered the call, bringing their cars over to be part of the show. Among these vehicles were a Tesla Model S and Model X.

Tesla enthusiast James Ransom prepared the two electric cars for the auto show, dropping them off at the exhibition’s location. The next day, he received a call from the event’s organizers informing him that the Teslas are not welcome in the event. Ransom explained the circumstances in a statement to The Drive.

“I was called on Wednesday evening and asked to remove the Teslas. I was told that the cars were not allowed to stay because they were not part of the Dealers Association. Something about a higher-up in the association who said that the Teslas could not be at the show due to the manufacturer not using dealerships for their sales,” Ransom said.

(Photo: James Ransom/The Drive)
(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});

Fellow Tesla owner and prominent Kansas-based auto enthusiast Ken Smiley, whose 1956 Jaguar XK140 and 2016 Porsche GT4 are on display at the show, noted in an email to Teslarati that the ADAKC’s excuse for the removal of the two electric cars was questionable at best. Smiley mentioned in an email that there were several other vehicles on display from manufacturers who were not part of the ADAKC, such as Noble, Pontiac, Ariel, and Lamborghini. All these vehicles were welcomed and allowed to remain.

To address the situation, Ken sent an email to the organizers, calling them out on the discriminatory practice. Below is the Tesla owner’s email in full.

Dear Larry and Natalie,

It has come to my attention that a particular make of automobile is being singled out for unfair discrimination at the KC Auto Show this year and that the owners of these cars were asked to remove them from Bartle Hall. The vehicles in question were two used Tesla automobiles owned by private individuals and put on display as part of the KC Auto Museum’s variety of cars display at the KC Auto Show. As an officer/member in multiple car clubs in Kansas City (Porsche, Jaguar, All British, Tesla) I find this action reprehensible and urge you to immediately reconsider your actions before something like this goes viral and brings negative publicity to the car show.

I understand that with regard to NEW cars that Tesla does not have a dealer network and does not participate in the Automobile Dealer Association of Greater Kansas City. I would understand if your association told Tesla that they could not bring new cars down and could not be represented at the show unless they joined the organization. However, this is NOT what is happening in this instance. These two cars are privately owned used cars brought by their enthusiastic owners to help support the KC Auto Museum display at the auto show. There were owners who brought Pontiacs, a Noble, a couple of Ariel Atoms and Lamborghinis ALL of which are NOT members of the ADAKC. So if you are going to discriminate against non-members, then you need to do it equally and ask that ALL non-member cars leave the show, not simply single out Tesla.

Please let me know whether or not the Teslas are welcome to come back or if the unfair discrimination against these owners and their vehicles is going to continue. Speaking of the owners, the people you are hurting are automotive enthusiasts, not the audience you want to hurt. These individuals took their time to clean up their cars and transport them down to Bartle Hall only to be told a few hours later that they had to take them back out. While I currently have two cars on display at the show (1956 Jaguar XK140 and 2016 Porsche GT4) I am not sure that I will be willing to support a show in the future that unfairly discriminates against a certain model car. I hesitate to think how Marion Battaglia would react if I told him that either my Jag or Porsche was being discriminated against and being asked to leave the show. As I mentioned, this unfair discrimination isn’t hurting Tesla the car company, which the association may have an issue with, but rather hurting individual automotive enthusiasts.

Sincerely,

Ken

The auto enthusiast notes that the ADAKC has not responded to his email yet. Due to the incident and the blatant act of discrimination, Ken notes that numerous car fans and Tesla owners are boycotting the event to show their frustration at the organizers. An ADAKC spokesperson did issue a statement to The Drive, but based on the organization’s stance, it appears that they are putting the blame on the offended Tesla enthusiasts.

“This is a non-story. Ken Smiley is simply bringing this up because he seems to be angry and wants to stir the pot,” the spokesperson said, adding that the two Teslas do not fit the “Classic Car” theme of the exhibition. When pressed by the publication why other modern vehicles from non-ADAKC members, such as Ariel Atoms and Lamborghini Huracans, were allowed to remain, the spokesperson was less certain, stating that they “had to talk to the show’s producer.”

The 2019 Kansas City Auto Show was held from March 6-10, 2019.

Tesla will keep stores open, vehicle price increase coming after March 18

Tesla has revised its plan to wind down many of its retail stores in favor of keeping more stores open, but at the expense of increasing the price of Model S, Model X, and some Model 3 variants after March 18.

The update follows Tesla’s recent announcement that it would be shifting to an online-only sales model and closing many of its stores as a cost-cutting measure to support the new $35,000 Model 3.

“We will be closing some stores, and there will be a reduction in headcount…Unfortunately, there’s no way around it,” said Tesla CEO Elon Musk in a conference call. “We’re sort of in a binary choice. Reduce headcount and sell the $35,000 car and have fewer people, or not provide a $35,000 car.”

However, amid recent store closures and related staffing cuts, Tesla announced on Monday that it has decided to reopen some stores that are in high visibility areas.

(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});

“A few stores in high visibility locations that were closed due to low throughput will be reopened, but with a smaller Tesla crew.” noted Tesla. The company will evaluate the performance of approximately 20% store locations over the next few months before determining if they should remain open or close.

Tesla explains that by keeping more stores open, the company will need to raise the price of Model S, Model X and the more expensive Model 3 variants.

“As a result of keeping significantly more stores open, Tesla will need to raise vehicle prices by about 3% on average worldwide. In other words, we will only close about half as many stores, but the cost savings are therefore only about half.”

Tesla was expected to further reduce the price of Model S and Model X after realizing a 5-6% cost reduction from its transition to online-only sales. However, the vehicle price increase coming after March 18 will likely offset those plans until additional store closures take place.W

A copy of Tesla’s blog post explaining the new store and pricing update has been provided below.

Update on Tesla Stores and Pricing

The Tesla Team March 10, 2019

Last month, we announced that we would be winding down many of our stores and moving to online-only sales in order to pass the savings along to our customers.

Over the past two weeks we have been closely evaluating every single Tesla retail location, and we have decided to keep significantly more stores open than previously announced as we continue to evaluate them over the course of several months. When we recently closed 10% of sales locations, we selected stores that didn’t invite the natural foot traffic our stores have always been designed for. These are stores that we would have closed anyway, even if in-store sales made up our entire sales model. A few stores in high visibility locations that were closed due to low throughput will be reopened, but with a smaller Tesla crew. In addition, there are another 20% of locations that are under review, and depending on their effectiveness over the next few months, some will be closed and some will remain open.

As a result of keeping significantly more stores open, Tesla will need to raise vehicle prices by about 3% on average worldwide. In other words, we will only close about half as many stores, but the cost savings are therefore only about half.

Potential Tesla owners will have a week to place their order before prices rise, so current prices are valid until March 18th. There will be no price increase to the $35,000 Model 3. The price increases will only apply to the more expensive variants of Model 3, as well as Model S and X.

To be clear, all sales worldwide will still be done online, in that potential Tesla owners coming in to stores will simply be shown how to order a Tesla on their phone in a few minutes. And the generous return policy of 1000 miles or 7 days, whichever comes first, should alleviate the need for most test drives. However, cars will still be available for test drives at stores at the potential Tesla owner’s request. Stores will also carry a small number of cars in inventory for customers who wish to drive away with a Tesla immediately.

Tesla side cam captures speeding Mercedes in a near-miss during heavy rain

In a spectacular display made visible by Tesla’s recently improved Dashcam feature, a Mercedes E-Class is spotted dangerously swerving several times across three highway lanes in San Francisco. As seen in a video shared on Reddit, the Model 3’s built-in side and front cameras captures the Mercedes’ ultimately recovering from a potentially terrible accident.

In a recent over-the-air software update, Tesla gave vehicles the ability to record and store video from their onboard side cameras. With near 360-degree video surveillance capabilities, users can save 10-second video clips by tapping the Dashcam icon in the upper right-hand corner of the center touchscreen.

(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});

Tesla’s rollout of Sentry Mode is partially to thank for the upgraded camera recording abilities. Although the extended Dashcam feature was provided as part of a larger software update at the end of February, the idea of having Tesla’s Autopilot cameras to also double as a dashcam recording device is something that’s been in discussion for over a year since CEO Elon Musk first hinted at the upcoming feature.

Along with playing loud music and recording video after an intrusion detection, Sentry Mode can upload footage directly to Tesla’s servers as a backup, thereby protecting owners against thieves knowledgeable to remove the USB data storage drive before a break-in.

Several videos like the one capturing the Mercedes’ near-miss highway incident  have previously popped up on the Internet, including ones that capture attempted robberies and accidents in action. Given the enhanced perspective on events now made possible with Tesla side cameras, the possibility of recording video from the remaining side pillar and rear cameras on appropriately equipped vehicles would likely be a welcome feature down the road.

Tesla to replace ‘Pole Position’ with another racing game, says Elon Musk

Tesla CEO Elon Musk has assured the Tesla community that the company will be rolling out another racing game to its vehicles soon, following the removal of Pole Position from TeslAtari’s lineup of titles. Musk posted the announcement on Sunday, following Tesla’s update on its store closures and the newest adjustments to its vehicles’ pricing.

Reports from the Tesla community after recent software updates indicated that the beloved racing game, which was fondly renamed Mars Madness by Tesla, was no longer present on their vehicles. Musk explained the game’s removal in a Twitter post. “Couldn’t resolve all the rights issues. Will add another racing game soon,” he said.

(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});

Elon Musk mentioned the inclusion of the iconic racing game as part of Tesla’s “gamification” of its user experience last year. Prior to Pole Position‘s rollout, the company started with other titles such as Missile Command, Lunar Lander, Asteroids, and Centipede when it began releasing Software Version 9.  The racing game, with its Tesla-specific mods, was among the most fun among the company’s lineup of titles, as the game could be controlled through a car’s actual steering wheel.

TeslAtari is arguably one of the most Elon Musk-esque Easter Eggs currently available, especially since games and the CEO go a long way back. Way before making his fortune for his work at Zip2, X.com/PayPal, Tesla, and SpaceX, Musk was a nerdy kid that simply loves computers. So enamored was Musk with games that he created his own title called Blastar when he was just 12. The 12-year-old Musk would make around $500 for his creation, seemingly foreshadowing his future as one of the world’s most successful entrepreneurs.

Musk’s mention of another, upcoming racing game is quite exciting. Beyond Pole Position, there are other classics, fun games that the electric car maker can introduce to its fleet of vehicles, including Sega’s Outrun, Konami’s WEC Le Mans, and even older titles such as Night Driver. This new racing game will hopefully join other titles that Musk has responded to on Twitter, including the AI-apocalypse-themed Blazing Chrome, a shoot-em-up game that will likely make waiting inside a vehicle even more fun.

Tesla is looking to push the gamification of its fleet. In the company’s jobs online alone, positions such as Gaming Software Engineers are present, highlighting Tesla’s deeper gamification in the coming months.

Tesla in talks with potential Gigafactory 3 battery supplier for China’s Model 3: report

Tesla is reportedly looking into China-based Contemporary Amperex Technology Co Ltd (CATL) as a potential battery partner for Gigafactory 3, which is expected to start producing electric cars by the end of the year. CATL is among China’s most prominent battery suppliers, and it is on track to become the nation’s biggest manufacturer of lithium-ion batteries.

Bloomberg notes that the update was provided by people familiar with the discussions, who asked to remain anonymous due to the talks still being private. According to the publication’s sources, the two companies are discussing the possibility of a partnership for Gigafactory 3, but there is no guarantee yet that an agreement will be met.

Tesla has been showing signs that it is in the process of looking for battery suppliers for the upcoming facility, which is expected to produce both the Model 3 and Model Y for the local Chinese market. The company did mention a “fully qualified” vendor in its latest annual report, though Tesla also highlighted that it is working on adding more. This “qualified vendor” appears to be referenced by the recent report’s sources, who note that CATL is already discussing the required specifications of the battery cells with Tesla.

This is not the first time that rumors emerged about Tesla’s potential battery partner for Gigafactory 3. Last January, reports emerged pointing to Tesla allegedly signing a preliminary agreement with China’s Tianjin Lishen for the Shanghai-based factory’s batteries. The rumor was short-lived, with Tesla stating that no preliminary arrangements have been reached. It remains to be seen if the electric car maker will respond similarly to the recent CATL reports.

Having a formidable battery partner is a necessity for Tesla’s expansion plans in China. For the company to saturate the country’s electric car market, it should be able to manufacture affordable, high-volume vehicles that leave no compromises in terms of quality. For this to happen, Tesla must be able to make premium battery packs at scale. This is something that the company’s Chinese battery partner must keep in mind, as Panasonic, Tesla’s partner that supplies the cells for the Model S, 3, and X, admitted last year that some of the slowdowns in Gigafactory 1’s production could be blamed on its inability to meet the electric car maker’s demand. “The bottleneck for Model 3 production has been our batteries,” Panasonic’s automotive business head Yoshio Ito said.

Tesla’s Gigafactory 3 is showing a notable amount of progress over the past months, with recent statements from a Shanghai official estimating that the facility will be completed by May. Just as initially scheduled, tooling of the factory is expected to commence immediately after, allowing Tesla to produce its first locally-made Model 3 by the end of 2019.
