Tesla adds Model 3 Cabin Air Filter to online shop

Tesla has added Cabin Air Filters for the Model 3 sedan to the company’s online shop. The filters are currently up for purchase individually, although the vehicle requires two filters to filter the air within the cabin properly.

Available for $17 on the company’s online shop, the filters are the first available Tesla manufactured cabin filters available for the Model 3. The company currently sells High-efficiency particulate air, or HEPA, grade filters for the Model S and Model X, but Model 3 filters were never available through the Tesla.com shop until now.

The filters Tesla has released for the Model 3 are not HEPA grade, but they can protect those in the vehicle from outside sources of pollution. The description of the Model 3 Filter suggests it can “prevent pollen, industrial fallout, road dust, and other particles from entering the cabin through the vents.”

(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});

Previously, Tesla Model 3 owners who required a cabin filter replacement were to purchase it from third-party distributors like Amazon or eBay. Some even opted for a much more expensive HEPA option from notable Tesla enthusiast Rich Rebuilds’ website, evtuning.com.

While the Model 3 does not have Tesla’s Bioweapon Defense Mode feature, it does not mean the car cannot protect owners from polluted air outside the vehicle. One Model 3 owner with a standard air filter, the vehicle’s “recycle air” setting turned on, and the fan set to speed 5 reported an improvement in-cabin air quality from 135 μg/m3 to 5 μg/m3 within nine minutes during California’s intense wildfires in 2018. Not bad for a vehicle with a filter that Elon Musk described as “good.”

Tesla has also described step-by-step instructions on how owners can remove old filters and replace them with newly purchased ones. Tesla states each owner should replace the filters every two years to keep the air inside the cabin as clean as possible.

Owners on the r/TeslaModel3 subreddit have speculated as to why the electric car maker has decided to sell the filters individually, even though the Model 3 requires two filters to filter cabin air properly. One user stated this could end up being more convenient for owners if the vehicle has a damaged filter for any reason; the owner will only have to purchase the number of filters they need.

To keep air quality to a maximum within the cabin, Tesla recommends that Model 3 owners “set manual recirculating air and turn up the blower speed.”

Tesla owners will now have the original equipment manufacturer air filter available to them because of the carmaker’s decision to release an in-house cabin filtration system. The filter can be purchased on Tesla’s shop website here.

Tesla’s fight for price parity is also taking shape in the sustainable food industry

Tesla’s mission for sustainability and goal to reach price parity with its petrol-powered competition in the transportation industry is also starting to take shape in the food industry. The world of meat alternatives is currently competing with animal products to achieve the same goal: price parity to promote environmental sustainability in food, an item crucial for everyday survival.

Since the release of Tesla CEO Elon Musk’s Master Plan, the goal has always been to offer affordable and environmentally sustainable options to drivers everywhere. To do this, Tesla’s ultimate goal is to drive the cost down of batteries to $100 per kWh and close the gap between the cost of electric vehicles and gas vehicles.

Similarly, meat alternatives are fighting for the same price parity in their own way. The goal of meat alternative companies like Beyond Meats and Impossible Foods is to offer options to traditional beef products at equal prices so the average consumer will consider buying sustainable and more environmentally-friendly foods that satisfy their cravings. After CNBC reported Impossible Foods’ prices were slashed by 15% earlier this week because manufacturing efficiencies and large scale production, price parity is closer than ever.

The argument against electric cars and sustainably-produced foods has always been price. As electric vehicles, Tesla’s, in particular, started expensive, they have slowly dropped in price while increasing performance and efficiency. Batteries that power the cars have become a mass-produced item, thus forcing the price of cells to drop dramatically. Eventually, this will lead to batteries being produced at the $100 kWh target, inducing price parity.

(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});

This story is no different than meat alternatives. When Beyond Meats and Impossible Foods were formed in 2009 and 2011 respectively, the goal was to create products that would give people “meat” without the adverse environmental or health effects that come from eating real beef. The battle with the new “meat” products was that they were expensive to produce; thus, many people did not see the advantage of buying them.

However, the environmental movement has grown considerably because of the increased awareness of climate change. People are now willing to cut some meat out of their diets to fight industrial farming and are replacing it with meat alternatives. As many people across the world have embraced these new meat alternatives, large scale businesses like Burger King have adapted the products because of increased demand.

Burger King added the Impossible Whopper to its menu in 2019. After prices for BK’s plant-based Whopper were noticeably higher than the company’s regular flagship sandwich, it was labeled a “premium” product. As demand for the Impossible meats rose, the cost of the went down. Now the Impossible Whopper is available on BK’s 2 for $6 menu.

The increase in demand for meat alternatives has led to lower prices. Just like electric vehicle batteries, mass production has contributed to a decrease in price, and eventually, this will lead to price parity with real meat. Beyond Meat CEO Ethan Brown predicts his company will reach price parity with natural beef products in 2024, one year after analysts believe EVs will reach parity with gas vehicles.

In the grand scheme of things, the goal between battery vehicles and meat substitutes is the same: increase environmental sustainability by offering products that are equivalent to the things people have been using for their whole lives. Turn people away from things that harm the environment and make sustainable alternatives just as affordable as their competitors, eliminating the argument that battery cars or meatless options are “too expensive” and “unaffordable.”

SpaceX nails 50th rocket booster landing ahead of Crew Dragon takeover

On its fifth launch of 2020, SpaceX has nailed its 50th Falcon rocket booster landing and sent Cargo Dragon (Dragon 1) en route to the International Space Station (ISS) on its final mission, paving the way for Crew Dragon’s imminent takeover.

At 11:50 pm EST (4:50 UTC), a flight-proven Falcon 9 booster and twice-flown Cargo Dragon spacecraft lifted off from SpaceX’s LC-40 Cape Canaveral Air Force Station (CCAFS) launch pad, sending the Dragon 1 spacecraft on its third and final orbital launch. Things went as planned and the booster nailed its second landing, coming to a rest at Landing Zone-1 (LZ-1), while Falcon 9’s second stage successfully placed Dragon in orbit and deployed the vehicle. Now safely in orbit with both solar arrays deployed, Cargo Dragon will use built-in maneuvering thrusters to tweak its orbit, ultimately rendezvousing with space station no earlier than the morning (EDT) of March 9th.

Hopefully wrapping up a decade of success, the CRS-20 mission will be SpaceX’s last under NASA’s Commercial Resupply Services (CRS) Phase 1 contract, marking Cargo Dragon’s 20th successful space station rendezvous and 19th operational resupply mission. Over those 19 CRS missions, SpaceX – once CRS-20 has safely berthed – will have delivered nearly 45 metric tons (100,000 lb) of cargo to the space station and returned another 31 metric tons (>70,000 lb) to Earth, remaining the only operational spacecraft capable of doing so. While Dragon 1 will cease operations after capsule C112’s planned reentry and splashdown sometime next month, the vast wealth of expertise SpaceX has derived has already been funneled directly into Crew Dragon (Dragon 2), its successor.

As Falcon 9 often does, the rocket’s booster and upper stage engine plumes interacted to produce a spectacular light show, often compared to an artificial nebula. (SpaceX)
(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});

Carrying about 2050 kg (4500 lb) of cargo, Cargo Dragon capsule C112 and its expendable trunk section will spend about a month in orbit after berthing with the space station this Monday. The mission may be the last time in history a SpaceX spacecraft berths with the International Space Station, a process that the Dragon 2 spacecraft will soon replace outright once it takes over. Instead of berthing, which refers to the process of astronauts manually ‘grappling’ a visiting vehicle with the space station’s massive robotic arm, SpaceX’s next-generation spacecraft relies on docking, meaning that it does all the work itself.

Docking is thus somewhat riskier and more technically challenging, but it also requires far less input from the station’s crew and can be done almost entirely autonomously, further simplifying the rendezvous process. Once it gets to that point, SpaceX’s massive Starship spacecraft will likely rely on the same docking technology if or when it comes time for it to mate with the ISS – the vehicle is simply too big for anything else.

An overview of the expected modifications needed to turn a Crew Dragon into a Cargo Dragon 2. (NASA OIG)
SpaceX’s Crew Dragon flawlessly performed the company’s for autonomous space station docking back in March 2019. (SpaceX)

A slightly tweaked version of Crew Dragon, SpaceX’s future Cargo Dragon 2 spacecraft will replace its human passengers with the same supplies Cargo Dragon currently ferries to and from the ISS. According to Vice President of Build and Build Reliability Hans Koenigsmann, SpaceX has already begun building its first Cargo Dragon 2 spacecraft back at its Hawthorne, California headquarters. That vehicle’s launch debut is scheduled no earlier than (NET) “fall” 2020 and will support CRS-21, SpaceX’s first NASA resupply mission under its CRS Phase 2 contract.

Cargo Dragon 2’s “launch debut” should thankfully be quite the non-event. Crew Dragon – nearly identical – will have hopefully flown at least two (and perhaps three) orbital missions to the space station by then, dramatically reducing risk. The spacecraft will also use Falcon 9, currently classed as one of the world’s most reliable launch vehicles. CRS-20 marked the rocket’s 54th consecutively successful launch, as well as SpaceX’s 50th successful booster landing since December 2015.

B1059 touched down for the first time on December 5th, 2019, coming to a rest on drone ship Of Course I Still Love You (OCISLY). 91 days later, B1059 completed its second launch and landing (CRS-20). (SpaceX)

For now, though, Cargo Dragon C112 still needs to make its way uphill to rendezvous with the ISS for the final time. Stay tuned for updates on the spacecraft’s last orbital mission.

Tesla Model Y goes up for grabs in new climate action raffle

There is something extra special about being one of the first owners of a vehicle that has the potential to change the auto industry as we know it. The Tesla Model Y is such a vehicle, and you can be one of the first owners of this all-electric crossover thanks to an initiative by a leading voice in the ongoing and escalating fight against climate change.

The CCAN Action Fund is a nonprofit created to inspire climate-friendly changes in public policy at the local, state, and national levels to directly address the ever-prevalent threat of global warming. The group’s activities span several programs, from voter education, lobbying, and direct participation in the electoral process.

Among the issues that concern the nonprofit is the electrification of the transportation sector. Cars, trucks, and other forms of transport account for almost 30% of the United States’ climate pollution. Thus, electric vehicles like Teslas, which only get cleaner over time, contribute to lowering the overall emissions of the transportation sector. For the CCNA Action Fund, it only makes sense to hold a fundraising raffle and give away one of the most highly-anticipated all-electric cars today: the Tesla Model Y.

Support climate change and enter in a chance to win a Tesla Model Y via CCAN Action Fund, the advocacy arm of the Chesapeake Climate Action Network

Following last year’s fundraising success, helped by the Tesla community’s efforts to raffle off a new Tesla Model 3, the CCAN Action Fund is back this year looking to raise another round in its fight against climate change.

In partnership with Teslarati, CCAN supporters have a chance to take home a rare Tesla Model Y Dual Motor AWD! Winners of the raffle will have the option to customize their Model Y according to their preference, with the nonprofit allotting its prize money for the purchase of a Dual Motor AWD vehicle with 19″ Gemini Wheels, all-black interior, and blue, silver, black, or white paint. CCAN will also cover the federal tax payments associated with the prize.

Credit: Teslarati

The Tesla Model Y Dual Motor AWD is expected to be one of the most important electric cars that will be released in recent years. Priced aggressively like its Model 3 sedan sibling and equipped with bleeding-edge tech and a range of 315 miles per charge, the Model Y has the potential to disrupt the crossover industry, which just happens to be one of the market’s fastest-growing segments today. Based on sightings from the Tesla community, Model Y deliveries are likely to start very soon.

Tickets for the CCAN Action Fund’s Tesla Model Y raffle are worth $100 each, and only 3,000 will be allocated before being sold out. Because this is a fundraising effort for climate action, the Tesla Model Y will be raffled off regardless of the number of tickets sold, making the odds of winning anywhere from an incredible 1 in hundreds chance of winning to an amazing 1 in 3000 chance.

The Tesla Model Y drawing will be held on May 1, 2020 at 4:54 EST, regardless of the number of tickets that are purchased.

Interested participants in the CCAN Action Fund’s Tesla Model Y raffle could click here.

Some of our teammates have been friends with members of the Chesapeake Climate Action Network over the past few years. In support of their cause and through a sponsorship with their climate action fund, Teslarati has been helping our friends raise much-needed funds that will help their mission to institute climate policies with local governments.

Please consider helping. Entering in a raffle with amazing odds to take home a Tesla Model Y doesn’t hurt either 🙂

General Motors claims its battery tech is the ‘Android’ to Tesla’s ‘iPhone’ batteries

Amidst Tesla’s dominance in the electric vehicle market, General Motors has claimed that its new battery design could help it catch up to, or even surpass, the Elon Musk-led company within a few years. It appears that GM truly believes its batteries could dent Tesla’s industry dominance, similar to how Android devices gained the ability to compete head-on with Apple’s iPhone.

GM unveiled its $20 billion plan to begin producing a competitive lineup of fully electric vehicles on March 4. CEO Mary Barra and fellow executives noted that a lot of its efforts has to do with batteries that have reduced cobalt content. The battery design GM plans to implement also can be modified in size or layout, making it versatile enough to fit into a variety of vehicles, from small cars like the Chevrolet Bolt to massive trucks like the Hummer EV.

GM executives noted that designing a cost-effective and range-efficient battery is crucial to the success of its upcoming electric vehicle lineup. Barra stated that a range of 300 miles per charge is vital before consumers even consider buying an electric car. If a company can accomplish this in an affordable package, success will likely be within reach.

(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});

Tesla’s dominance, especially amidst the rise of the Model 3, is comparable to iPhone’s emergence in 2007. The iPhone arguably started the movement away from flip and candy bar-style mobile devices towards sleek, touch-based phones. Android-powered devices came along soon after, offering features that Apple’s iPhone simply did not have.

Tesla’s recognition as the “iPhone” of the electric car industry and GM’s pitch as the “Android” of EVs suggests that the veteran automaker is willing to explore its options to give competition for the experienced EV maker. GM recognizes batteries are the key to making a mark in the sector, and its customizable modular battery pack design is believed to be the company’s answer to Tesla’s industry-leading batteries.

“What matters more than anything is battery cost. If you can get cost down, you can get better range. The big automakers like GM have an advantage in scale, and global reach,” Head of Transport Analysis for BloombergNEF Colin McKerracher said.

While GM currently has electric cars like the Bolt, the Audi e-Tron, and Jaguar I-PACE, and Tesla’s lineup of vehicles have continuously outsold the legacy automaker. This is due to several factors, part of which includes GM dealerships’ conservative push for the otherwise great vehicle.

Whether GM can solve the puzzle and begin making a move towards Tesla’s dominance in the electric vehicle sector remains to be seen. Competition between automakers can provide one thing for the future of sustainable transportation: a surefire way to increase technology as manufacturers aim to one-up each other. And when this happens, it is usually consumers who win in the end.

Tesla delivers on Elon Musk’s driver seat-activated Bluetooth feature

Tesla’s latest software update 2020.8.1 (full release notes) that started rolling out earlier this week introduced a Bluetooth improvement that makes phone-to-car audio transitions seamless.

Instead of a Tesla automatically connecting to a paired smartphone when one opens the door or goes near the car, the vehicle will only connect to the paired phone after one occupies the driver’s seat and all the doors are closed.

This feature follows the confirmation of Tesla CEO Elon Musk in January that such improvement will soon be implemented. The idea came about when Tesla owner Rob Hoehn shared a suggestion from Reddit to Elon Musk, which involved the detection of a person in the driver’s seat before switching to Bluetooth.

(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});

“When a Tesla is unlocked and you’re in the middle of a call, it’s pretty eager to switch the audio from the phone over to the car. This can be frustrating when you’re in the middle of a call and you are not even inside the car yet. Or when you’re near the car and someone else gets in the car a similar thing happens,” Hoehn wrote.

Musk promptly replied with “Thanks for mentioning! We should’ve done this ages ago.”

The Bluetooth improvement might sound very simple but it is a very practical update that would save Tesla owners from frustration when their mobile device automatically connects to the car via Bluetooth even when they don’t need to. The seamless pairing of mobile devices would also lower the risk of distractions.

Countless features have been added to Tesla vehicles following Musk’s interaction with owners via Twitter. Last January, he also confirmed that a never-before-seen in-cabin camera can be used with Sentry Mode to help protect Teslas from vehicle break-ins.

Below is the portion of the 2020.8.1 firmware release notes about the Bluetooth improvement:

To improve the audio transition from phone-to-car when entering your vehicle, Bluetooth now connects to your paired phone only after you are sitting in the driver’s seat and all doors are closed. As a reminder, you can pair your phone to Bluetooth by touching the Bluetooth icon on the top of your touchscreen and then “Add New Device.”

Tesla Model 3 Performance on car carriers spotted departing Giga Shanghai

Tesla China appears to be shipping Model 3 Performance sedans from Giga Shanghai, based on recent photographs captured by the country’s electric car enthusiasts. Tesla China also received approval from the country’s regulators to begin selling longer-range Model 3 variants.

Photographs of the Model 3 Performance were uploaded by Tesla enthusiast @JayInShanghai. The pictures clearly show not only the Chinese Tesla insignia that comes standard on all vehicles produced at Giga Shanghai but also the red-underlined “Dual Motor” badge. This badge, as well as red brake calipers on the sedans at the trucks, confirms that the sedans are Performance vehicles.

(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});

The only Model 3 variant that was formally announced for Giga Shanghai so far is the Model 3 Standard Range+. Tesla China does list the SR+, and Dual Motor Long Range and Performance variants for sale on its website, though no announcements have been made about the next Model 3 trim that will be produced at the Shanghai-based facility.

As the Model 3 Performance starts getting shipped from Giga Shanghai, the Financial Post reported that Tesla also received approval from the Chinese government’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology on March 6 for the vehicle’s Long Range RWD variant.

The approval states that new vehicles will have a range of more than 600 kilometers or about 327 miles. The SR+ variant offered to Chinese customers since Giga Shanghai’s first days of production provides 445 kilometers of range per charge. The Long Range and Performance variants provide 590 and 595 kilometers of range, respectively.

(Credit: JayinShanghai/Twitter)

Giga Shanghai has a current reported run rate of 3,000 vehicles per week. There is no shortage of demand from Chinese customers. The company’s Chinese production site is managing to keep up with an influx of orders and deliveries thanks to quickly improving production efficiency.

There has also been no shortage of challenges that Giga Shanghai faced since it began delivering Model 3s to customers in January. As the global coronavirus epidemic remained present throughout China right after the country’s Spring Festival, Tesla shut its doors, halting production and delaying deliveries for a short period.

However, the company has caught back up and is now planning to not only deliver the fastest variant of the Model 3 but begin manufacturing vehicles with longer ranges. The approval from the Chinese government indicates that Tesla is working on producing longer-range options of the car from its Shanghai-based site, especially as the company continues to offer more miles per charge to customers through Over-the-Air software updates.

Tesla Giga Berlin is becoming a sweetheart with politicians in Germany

The Brandenburg Social Democratic Party (SPD) in Germany wants to use 10 million euros ($11.29 million) to help spread the “Tesla effect” across the country.

Brandenburg SPD parliamentary group chairman Erik Stohn wants to use the funds for smaller projects that would help residents of the area. He referred to projects such as buses for the public, electric charging stations, or clinics where a doctor in Brandenburg can monitor the health of the local residents, German publication LR Online reported.

“We want to take the Turbo Tesla pace across the country,” said Stohn. The lawmaker alludes to the “Tesla Speed” seen when the carmaker built Giga Shanghai in China where it only took about 10 months to build the car factory and turn on its production lines on a muddy property, and took a few months more to deliver the first vehicles to local customers.

SPD also expects Giga Berlin to attract more investments into the region. This is consistent with Brandenburg Economics Minister Jorg Steinbach’s statement before that the Tesla car factory will open opportunities for Germany’s young workers.

(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});

Around a billion euros ($1.13 billion) is expected to be spent across the region for infrastructure and future technologies. The SPD, after a closed-door meeting on Thursday, revealed that about 40 million euros ($45.19 million) of projects will be initiated this year.

While Tesla has received support from the local and federal government to build Giga Berlin, it had to deal with some kinks along the way. The Brandenburg government allowed Tesla to prepare a portion of the 300-hectare industrial property for its Phase 1 construction but the clearing was temporarily halted when environmental groups, businesses, and local residents expressed their worries about the water supply in the area. The German court, later on, clarified the matter as the state government began infrastructure planning. This included spending 90 million euros ($101 million) next year for various projects around Giga Berlin.

During the height of the protests last month, Giga Berlin also won the heightened support of the Federal Economics Minister Peter Altmaier. “The construction of the Tesla automobile plant in Brandenburg has been of great importance for more climate protection and one of the most important industrial settlements in the new federal states for a long time,” Altmaier said.

In addition, there were calls for the speeding up of the approval procedures for industrial plants– which are often slowed down by long planning processes, objections, and protests — in the country. The Federal Association of German Industry (BDI) and the Institute of Germany Business (IW) warned that the delay of such big projects might scare away investors from doing business in Germany.

German publication Berliner Morgenpost also reported about calls to form a regional council for Brandenburg and Berlin to involve the people in deciding on how to develop the region.

Giga Berlin is expected to do the groundbreaking later this month and Tesla CEO Elon Musk has confirmed his presence. If all goes well, the first car factory of Tesla in Europe will begin production of the Model Y by July 2021.

The Gigafactory in Grunheide is expected to create 12,000 jobs and produce 10,000 vehicles per week.

SpaceX on track for last Cargo Dragon launch, first Falcon 9 land landing in months

SpaceX is hours away from its Cargo Dragon (Dragon 1) spacecraft’s last space station resupply mission, a historic launch that will also include a Falcon 9 booster’s first land landing attempt in more than half a year.

Scheduled to lift off no earlier than 11:50 pm EST (04:50 UTC) on March 6th (March 7th UTC), flight-proven Falcon 9 booster B1059 rolled out to SpaceX Launch Complex 40 (LC-40) – part of Cape Canaveral Air Force Station (CCAFS) – on Thursday afternoon. Carrying twice-flown Dragon capsule C112, set to smash SpaceX’s orbital spacecraft turnaround record, tonight’s launch will mark SpaceX’s last International Space Station (ISS) mission under its first NASA Commercial Resupply Services (CRS) contract – awarded in 2008.

Aside from Cargo Dragon’s historic final launch and record spacecraft turnaround time, CRS-20 will also mark SpaceX’s first attempted land landing – meaning a Falcon 9 booster landing at LZ-1 or LZ-2 – since July 2019. Thanks in part to SpaceX’s Starlink launch priorities and Falcon Heavy’s intermittent launch cadence, the sonic booms of Falcon booster reentries have been a relative rarity at Landing Zones for the last half-year. CRS-20 will thankfully end that faux-drought and may even be followed just weeks later by a second Falcon booster return to LZ-1.

The last Cargo Dragon (Dragon 1) capsule scheduled to launch was likely shipped to from California to Florida in mid-February. (SpaceX)
(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});

A decade of success in orbit

Over Dragon 1’s decade of service, the spacecraft has successfully delivered more than 40 metric tons (90,000 lb) of cargo to the International Space Station (ISS) and returned almost as much from the station to Earth – still the only operational spacecraft capable of doing so since the Space Shuttle’s 2011 retirement.

If CRS-20 goes as planned, NASA will have awarded SpaceX a total of $3.1B for its finished CRS Phase 1 contract, translating to an average of $147M apiece for 21 missions (including the CRS-7 failure and Dragon’s first space station demo mission) to the ISS.

Pictured here, Cargo Dragon C102 became the first commercial spacecraft to rendezvous and berth with the ISS in May 2012. CRS-1, Dragon’s first operational resupply mission, launched six just months later. (NASA)

In other words, each kilogram of cargo Falcon 9 and Dragon delivered to the space station wound up costing NASA a bit less than $80,000, admittedly eye-watering but quite favorable compared to the Space Shuttle’s ~$340,000/kg (assuming program cost of $240B (c. 2020) and STS-135’s ~5300 kg of cargo).

Small steps towards full reusability

SpaceX’s CRS Phase 1 successes have also helped NASA cautiously accept flight-proven commercial rockets and spacecraft as the company has gradually introduced Falcon 9 booster and Cargo Dragon capsule reusability. Now, more than two years since SpaceX’s first capsule (June 2017) and booster reuses (December 2017) on NASA CRS missions, the company has launched two Dragon capsules to the space station for the third time and flown Dragons on flight-proven boosters four times.

CRS-20 will mark the third time a Cargo Dragon capsule (C112) flies a third orbital resupply mission, as well as the fifth time a CRS mission will launch on a flight-proven booster (B1059). Compared to the sheer scale and ambition of SpaceX’s next-generation, fully-reusable Starship and Super Heavy launch system, Dragon and Falcon 9 may seem rather diminutive. However, it’s hard to exaggerate just how much reusability expertise SpaceX has gained through their development.

And after launch. (Richard Angle)
B1059 returned to Port Canaveral on December 7th, 2019 and will launch CRS-20 – its second Dragon mission – almost exactly three months later. (Richard Angle)
Cargo Dragon C112 launched for the second time in December 2018, supporting NASA’s CRS-16 resupply mission. (Teslarati)
A great deal of work undoubtedly remains, but SpaceX’s Dragon spacecraft and Falcon rockets are the foundation upon which Starship will (hopefully) one day succeed. (SpaceX)

Set to take over resupply missions and ferry astronauts to and from the space station, SpaceX and CEO Elon Musk already considered Dragon 2 (Crew Dragon) to be dramatically simpler, faster, and cheaper to reuse. Starship will ultimately build off those significant improvements, enabling another leap (or several) forward. Perhaps just as importantly, Falcon and Dragon reuse will likely continue to make profound political and bureaucratic inroads over the next 5-10 years, gradually eroding and reshaping the status quo. Their progress will thus hopefully set both the technical and societal stages for widespread success and acceptance by the time Starship can be declared operational.

Weather is currently 60% GO for CRS-20, and the rocket and spacecraft are likely just hours from going vertical at the LC-40 launch pad. As always, tune into SpaceX’s official webcast approximately 15 minutes before liftoff to catch the Falcon 9 launch and landing live.

Tesla Track Mode V2 Release Notes: Third-Party Charging, Bluetooth update included

Tesla has started rolling out software 2020.8.1 that includes Track Mode V2 for Model 3, third-party charging stations, improvements to Model S and Model X regenerative braking, and a host of other features.

YouTuber Tesla Raj explored the latest software update using the Model 3 Performance of Wade Anderson (@TeslaSocialC) to demonstrate features for Track Mode and discuss what’s new. The 2020.8.1 firmware includes improvements to Navigation, Driving Visualization, Bluetooth, regenerative braking, voice command reliability, third-party charging station options, plus minor updates on language support.

Track Mode V2 for Model 3

The latest version of the Track Mode for the Model 3 started rolling out as a free over-the-air (OTA) update earlier this week and coinciding with the launch of the Model 3 Track Package for racing enthusiasts.

Track Mode V2 gives Model 3 owners the option of customizing settings for Handling Balance, Stability Assist, Regenerative Braking, among others.

“Track Mode has been improved to make it easier to monitor the status of your car, create custom track mode settings profiles and record your track day data,” the 2020.8.1 firmware release notes read.

Tesla Raj, upon getting the latest software update, tested the Track Mode V2 on the Model 3 and switched the car to rear-wheel drive with no stability assist.

“I have never… I don’t have much experience in a Performance Model 3 but I’ll tell you one thing. My heart, lungs, and liver, and all my body parts are all here in my chest,” said Tesla Raj.

Tesla Raj and Tesla Social also switched to full front-wheel drive and then to 50-50 to feel how the car would perform.

Track Mode allows owners to create 20 profiles that perfectly suits their preferences and driving scenarios. Users can also customize the settings for a specific track.

Track Mode V2 also allows you to monitor the status of the car’s motors, brakes, and tires. The latest firmware also allows one to see a real-time accelerometer via the G-meter. Likewise, the map now includes a Lap Timer.

Model 3 owners can also save a video and other data of their driving sessions while on Track Mode. One has to assign a folder named “TeslaTrackMode” in the plugged USB flash drive where all the files would be saved. Track Mode will also store telemetry data, car status, speed, acceleration, and use of accelerator on the flash drive.

Bluetooth, Driving Visualization, And More

Tesla also tweaked how Bluetooth audio transitions from one’s phone to the car with this latest update. Now, Bluetooth connects a paired phone only after sitting in the driver’s seat and once all of the vehicle’s doors are closed.

More users can now enjoy the improved driving visualizations showing stoplights, stop signs, and select road markings, which was only available before to Tesla owners in the United States.

According to the release notes, Tesla has also improved voice command reliability even in areas with poor connectivity.

Tesla owners in select sites in the San Francisco Bay Area can now find third-party charging stations via in-car navigation. Users in other locations in the US will also be able to enjoy this feature soon.

Regenerative Braking Improvements and New Navigation for Model S and Model X

Firmware 2020.8.1 also gives Model S and Model X owners increased regenerative braking that improves the overall driving experience and increases the amount of energy actively returned to the vehicle’s battery when slowing down.

The latest update also introduces a new navigation system with improved routes, more accurate arrival times, and a more responsive instrument cluster.

The full release notes for Firmware 2020.8.1 can be found below:

Introducing new Navigation (Beta)

Only Model S and X

Introducing a new navigation system for your vehicle that provides improved routes, more accurate arrival times, and a more responsive instrument cluster view to better display upcoming maneuvers.

For China: This release also includes new maps on the touchscreen. You can now view the maps in satellite view and see nearby points of interest.

Driving Visualization Improvements

This has been added for more regions, previously just the US.

The driving visualization can now display additional objects which include stop lights, stop signs and select road markings. The stop sign and stop light visualizations are not a substitute for an attentive driver and will not stop the car. To see these additional objects in your driving visualization, tap Controls > Autopilot > Self Driving Visualization Preview.

Track Mode Improvements

Only Model 3 (Performance)

Track Mode has been improved to make it easier to monitor the status of your car, create custom track mode settings profiles and record your track day data.

Monitor the status of your car motors, battery, brakes and tires, allowing you to adjust your driving in real time. G-meter, a real-time accelerometer, can now be viewed in the Cards area of the touchscreen. The map now displays a Lap Timer. Follow the onscreen instructions to place a start/finish pin on the map. At the completion of each lap, the Lap Timer displays the duration of the lap. It also displays the times associated with the previous and best laps in the driving session.

Track Mode allows you to save up to 20 Track Mode profiles to suit your preferences or driving scenario, or customize for a specific track. A new settings profile can be created by tapping Track Mode Settings > Add New Settings, entering a name for the settings profile, then adjusting settings including Handling Balance, Stability Assist, Regenerative Braking, Post-Drive Cooling and Compressor Overclock. Refer to the Owner’s Manual for more information regarding each setting.

You can now save a video and data of the Track Mode driving session to a plugged in USB flash drive which must contain a folder named “TeslaTrackMode” (without the quotation marks). When “Save Dashcam for Laps” is enabled, Track Mode stores a video of each lap in a driving session when using the Lap Timer. Track Mode also stores the car status and telemetry data including details about the vehicle’s position, speed, acceleration, and use of accelerator which is stored as a .CSV file on the USB flash drive.

Third-Party Charging Stations

Only vehicles in California.

Now you can find third-party charging options with your in-car navigation – select sites in the San Francisco Bay Area are available now with additional locations across the US coming soon. To access, press the lightning bolt icon on the bottom of your touchscreen, scroll down and select a Supercharger, Destination Charging or third-party charging location to navigate to.

Bluetooth Improvement

To improve the audio transition from phone-to-car when entering your vehicle, Bluetooth now connects to your paired phone only after you are sitting in the driver’s seat and all doors are closed. As a reminder, you can pair your phone to Bluetooth by touching the Bluetooth icon on the top of your touchscreen and then “Add New Device”.

Regenerative Braking

Only Model S and X

Regenerative braking force has been increased to improve the driving experience and increase how much energy is actively returned to the battery when slowing down.

Improved Voice Command Reliability

We have improved voice command reliability, including in areas with poor connectivity. Note: to use voice commands, simply tap the right steering wheel button and speak your command after the beep – there is no need to press and hold the button.

Additional Language Support

Your touchscreen is now available in additional languages. To change the language, simply go to Controls > Display > Language. Please note that your vehicle must be in PARK to enable this selection.

Additional Owner’s Manual Languages

The Owner’s Manual on your touchscreen is now available in Romanian, Hungarian, Slovenian, and Hebrew. As a reminder, you can change the language of the Owner’s Manual by tapping Controls > Service> Owner’s Manual and select your preferred language from the dropdown menu.

This release contains minor improvements and bug fixes.
