Tesla employee at Design Center opens up about smart, aggressive innovation


Tesla has a unique success story that can be largely attributed to the creative innovations the all-electric automaker fosters at its Design Center in Hawthorne, California. Pawel Pietryka, Creative Manager of User Interface Design at Tesla, was recently interviewed by job-centric website WorkWithUs and provided some insight on what it’s like working behind the scenes with Tesla’s creative teams. Overall, there’s an “aggressive” approach to innovation that comes from the unprecedented nature of Tesla’s mission in the automotive industry.

“This place is like nowhere else,” Pietryka is quoted at the introduction to the interview. “Driving a Tesla is honestly the most fun thing you can do – and we get to design that experience every single day.”

The team creating the experience that customers have come to expect from their Model S, Model 3, and Model X vehicles, along with related products like Superchargers, is a mixed group of car designers, vehicle engineers, software engineers, ergonomics specialists, visualization specialists, clay modelers, digital modelers, and prototypers. Producing technology-centric cars known for being fun and unconventional requires a special kind of work environment that fosters creativity, and Tesla’s approach to this involves collaboration and a high bar for candidates.

“Our teams are very small and that requires everyone to be ultra-collaborative, non-competitive and just plain smart,” Pietryka commented. “We…like to dabble in creative technologies and come up with some crazy ideas. It’s always exciting to create something new that doesn’t exist.”

Tesla’s Design Studio also has an environment that produces supportive relationships among its team members which includes accessibility to management, i.e., to Franz von Holzhausen, Tesla’s Chief Designer.

“I value the camaraderie most of all. We care for each other as much as the products we design, and I don’t mean that in a corny way. You really feel something special when you’re here, everyone says that,” Pietryka detailed. “We…have this incredible ability to shift focus and realign priorities in an instant. We’re lean by design and a byproduct of that is vastly more responsibility for everyone.”

The former Art Director for Apple recounts his decision to embark on a new journey with Tesla. “The only other company that I was excited to work for was Tesla, honestly. I care deeply about our sustainability mission and our aggressive focus on innovation, and what we’re doing here is completely unprecedented. I’ve worked on many digital experiences, but none as exciting as an entire car,” notes Pietryka in his interview with WorkWithUs. “Every single day is different. It could start with a lot of meetings or start with a lot of deadlines. Unpredictable, and no two days are the same, which is pretty amazing. It’s challenging at times, for sure, but also very rewarding.”

Vehicle design is obviously very important to Tesla, and the teams that form the foundation of its success in the market have proven their worth time and time again.

“Everyone knows good design needs to be functional, simple, intuitive. But more than anything it needs to deliver a great user experience,” says Tesla’s Creative Manager, Product Designer. “That means sometimes an experience needs to be fun, sometimes unconventional, and sometimes that means beautiful typography or other unexpected characteristics. I see a lot of good product and UI designers focus too much on the former. What’s the point of good, clean design if customers are not engaged or bored by it?”

Earlier this month, classified advertising firm Auto Trader dubbed Tesla as the Most Loved Brand in the industry in its 2019 New Car Awards. A survey of 60,000 vehicle owners using 16 key metrics to rate their cars saw Tesla rise to the top of the list by a community of enthusiastic owners that were particularly passionate about the brand. Auto Trader noted that technology was a prominent theme among the feedback from Tesla’s customers, and the style and usability of that technology is a big part of why it’s so valued.

Tesla’s vehicle design has even won over car enthusiasts that are primarily fans of traditionally-powered cars. In December last year, Henry Payne of The Detroit News purchased a Long Range RWD Model 3 and was immediately enthusiastic about the all-electric midsize sedan. His comments made in an appearance on Autoline TV focused on the Model 3’s remarkable combination of driving dynamics and software integration.

“Musk re-imagined the car like Steve Jobs re-thought the phone — as a study in design minimalism that is both gorgeous and more efficient than established platforms. Privately, other automaker execs tell me they admire Tesla for innovations that are pushing the industry forward: over-the-air updates, better connectivity, better user interfaces,” Payne commented.

Tesla’s Design Studio may not be in the spotlight very often or be very forthcoming with details about its operations, but the results it produces in the company’s vehicles certainly speak well of the work that’s going on inside.

Tesla is preparing Fremont factory for Model Y, Model S refresh production: report


Tesla is reportedly refitting parts of its Fremont factory in CA to make way for the upcoming production of the Model Y and a Model S refresh, which will feature an updated interior that is similar to that of the Model 3. The updates were related by a number of current and former Tesla employees, according to a recent report from CNBC.

The publication’s sources claim that Tesla is only beginning to place orders for the machinery required to manufacture the Model Y. It should be noted that neither Tesla nor CEO Elon Musk has confirmed that the Model Y will indeed be produced in the Fremont factory. The idea even seemed to have been shot down by Musk at one point last year, when he stated that site was already “packed to the gills” with the Model S, Model X, and Model 3 lines.

In order to make way for the Model Y, Tesla is reportedly looking to combine Model S and Model X production into a single line. This should allow the electric car maker to accommodate the new production facilities for the Model Y.

Apart from Model Y production in Fremont, the publication’s sources also claim that the electric car maker is preparing to roll out an interior refresh for the Model S that will give it the same minimalistic theme as the Model 3. The sources further noted that the refreshed Model S would utilize the same drive units and seats as the higher-end Model 3, as well as a battery pack that is capable of delivering up to 400 miles of range in a single charge.

Initial production for the Tesla Model S refresh will reportedly start sometime September, according to CNBC’s sources. Tesla, for its part, has declined to issue a comment.

An interior refresh for the Model S has been expected by the Tesla community for some time, mainly as the electric car maker appears to be moving towards the Model 3’s design theme, as shown in the interior of the Model Y, the Tesla Semi, and even (up to a point) the next-generation Roadster. With the Model S being given a refreshed interior, it would likely be only a matter of time before the Model X gets the same treatment as well.

Tesla appears to be set on starting the production of the Model Y as early as possible. Elon Musk noted during the vehicle’s unveiling that the all-electric SUV would enter production sometime next year. If Fremont is already being prepared for the arrival of the SUV, this timeframe could be accelerated. Together with a refreshed Model S, having the Model Y start production late this year or even early next year should help Tesla boost the demand for its vehicles even more.

Tesla to open pre-orders for locally-made Model 3 in China on May 31


Tesla has revealed that it will be opening pre-orders for locally-made Model 3 in China starting this Friday, May 31, 2019. The announcement was posted on the electric car maker’s official Weibo account, and it included a teaser image of a Tesla Model 3 facing the nearly complete factory shell of Gigafactory 3.

Tesla’s Weibo pre-order announcement included a short history of the company’s vehicles over the years, from the original Tesla Roadster to the Tesla Model 3. Following is a rough translation of Tesla’s Weibo post for its Chinese customers on Wednesday.

“In 2008, Tesla’s first electric car, the Roadster, was officially released. Its record-breaking acceleration, performance, cruising range, and driving performance proved to the world that electric vehicles could be superior to traditional internal combustion engines.

In 2012, Tesla launched the Model S, a pure electric luxury sedan, with its 17” touchscreen becoming an industry-leading design. In addition, the elegant shape and performance of the Model S completely overturned the expectations of the 21st-century car.

“In 2015, Model X landed on the market with an uncompromising attitude, perfecting a high-performance, safe, and intelligent SUV, and it was awarded by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) with a 5-Star Safety Rating.

In 2017, the more intimate Model 3 impressed countless consumers with its future-oriented design and excellent driving, and it became the US luxury car champion in 2018. May 31, 2019 – Made in China Model 3 will open soon. Expecting to meet you.”

Tesla has hinted at an announcement for the locally-made Model 3 over the past few days. On Monday, Tesla enthusiasts in China were saturated by a cryptic teaser that included the words 储势,待发 (roughly translates to “building up momentum, getting ready to launch”) and a date (May 31, 2019). The company did not provide any other details about its teaser, though it provided a follow-up the next day.

On Tuesday, Tesla released another teaser in the form of a fun Model 3 guessing game. The rules of the game were simple. From a set of hint numbers, Tesla fans were asked to guess and decode the list price of locally-produced Model 3. A report from Bloomberg which cited a source familiar with the matter suggested that Tesla will likely price the China-made Model 3 between 300,000 RMB ($43,400) and 350,000 yuan ($50,600) before subsidies.

Tesla’s decision to open pre-orders for China’s locally made Model 3 on May 31, 2019, is a bold move for the electric car maker. For one, it could result in some potential Model 3 buyers holding out for the arrival of the more affordable versions that will be coming out of Gigafactory later this year. This also puts incredible pressure on the company to get Gigafactory 3 ready for production as early as possible.

Optimistic estimates for Gigafactory 3’s initial Model 3 production suggest that the first vehicles could be manufactured in the Shanghai-based plant as early as September, though a long list of pre-orders for the domestic Model 3 will likely push the company to go for an even more aggressive timetable. Nevertheless, such a strategy will keep the Model 3 and Tesla visible to Chinese consumers, which would most likely benefit the electric car maker.

Gigafactory 3 is expected to produce the affordable versions of the Model 3 and Model Y for the Chinese market. By doing so, Tesla would be able to compete in China’s fast-growing and lucrative electric car segment using vehicles that are more competitive in price against offerings from local electric car companies.

Tesla Model S, 3, X takes on Audi e-tron in Autobahn range and efficiency test


German electric vehicle rental company nextmove recently conducted what could only be described as the ultimate Autobahn efficiency and range test, pitting the Tesla Model S, 3, and X against the upstart Audi e-tron and the bang-for-your-buck Hyundai Kona Electric. Following the EV rental firm’s test, it was evident that veteran automakers such as Audi still have a long way to go before they catch up to Tesla’s experience in electric cars.

Eight vehicles were used for nextmove’s test: a Model S 100D (equipped with 19” winter tires), two Tesla Model X 100D (one fitted with 19” winter tires and the other fitted with 20” summer tires), one Tesla Model 3 Dual Motor AWD (equipped with 19” summer tires), two Audi e-tron (one with digital side mirrors and another with classic mirrors; both equipped with 21” summer tires), and two Hyundai Kona Electric (one fitted with 17” summer tires and the other fitted with 17” winter tires). Each vehicle’s tire pressure was set according to manufacturer specifications, and each was driven by an experienced electric car driver.

Several rules were observed to keep the Autobahn test as controlled as possible. Cruise control was only utilized once the target cruising speed of 130 kph (81 mph) and 150 kph (93 mph) was reached. Features such as Regenerative Braking were also avoided, and heating was largely disabled. Thet route was 85 km (52.8 miles) long, with the vehicles traveling 130 kph one way and 150 kph in the other.

The results of both the 130 kph (81 mph) and 150 kph (93 mph) tests revealed that the Tesla Model 3 was the most efficient vehicle among the eight that the EV rental company evaluated. Following the Model 3 was the Hyundai Kona Electric in summer tires, which is, in turn, followed by the Tesla Model S 100D. The largest vehicle in the group, the Tesla Model X, proved less efficient than the Model 3, Model S, and Kona Electric, but it proved notably more efficient than the Audi e-tron.  

The Audi e-tron and the Tesla Model X had already gone head-to-head in a nextmove test in the past. During the previous test, the EV rental company utilized a pre-production version of the Audi e-tron, and it proved to be the electric equivalent of a gas-guzzler, being 23% less efficient than the larger, heavier Tesla Model X.

While the Audi e-tron performed much better against the Tesla Model X than its pre-production counterpart in the recent test, the all-electric SUV still proved less efficient than the Silicon Valley-made crossover. Quite interestingly, the difference in energy consumption between the Tesla Model X and Audi e-tron was more prominent at lower speeds than at higher speeds.

Tesla’s Model S, 3, and X cleared the house in terms of range. During the 130 kph test, the Model S 100D showed a range of 480 km (298 miles), the Model X 100D showed a range of 409 km (254 miles), and the Model 3 managed a range of 406 km (252 miles). The Hyundai Kona Electric turned in a respectable 322 km (200 miles), and the Audi e-tron, in last place, managed 301 km (187 miles).

The results of the 150 kph test were quite similar. The Model S, X and 3 proved superior once more with a range of 428 km (265 miles), 359 km (223 miles), and 358 km (222 miles). The Hyundai Kona Electric managed 283 km (176 miles), while the Audi e-tron achieved a range of 275 km (171 miles). With these results in mind, it appears that veteran automakers such as Audi still have their work cut out for them in terms of designing electric vehicles that offer a balance of power, efficiency, and range.

It should be noted that the Tesla Model X utilized by nextmove in its Autobahn efficiency test was a 100D unit, and thus, the vehicle was not yet equipped with the company’s updated high-efficiency drive units. With a “Raven” Model S and Model X in the equation, the German EV rental company’s test could very well have ended in a far more lopsided manner.

Tesla Model 3 owner catches Autopilot acting bizarre only to find it saved him


A Tesla Model 3 owner is thanking his electric sedan’s driver-assist system for saving him from getting sideswiped on the freeway. Surprisingly, the Model 3 owner only realized this hours after the incident happened, when he was reviewing footage from his vehicle’s built-in dashcam.

Jeff McQuinn had only taken delivery of his Tesla Model 3 a couple of days before his vehicle was involved in the close call. While driving on the freeway during moderately heavy rain on Autopilot, McQuinn felt his Model 3 swerve into an adjacent lane. He initially thought nothing much of the incident, attributing his Model 3’s rather bizarre behavior to something that might have affected Autopilot.

Based on the footage of the incident, it was evident that the Model 3 actually avoided a potential accident after a truck in an adjacent lane swerved into the electric sedan’s lane. This resulted in the Tesla engaging evasive maneuvers to avoid the other vehicle. The Model 3 owner described his experience in the description of his vehicle’s dashcam footage, which he shared on YouTube.

“My Tesla Model 3 was only two days old, and it saved me from getting sideswiped in moderately heavy rain. I first thought there was something wrong with my car, or Autopilot was not working well in the rain when it swerved hard into the other lane. It gave all the warnings, but I thought maybe rain got onto the camera lens. It wasn’t until I looked at the dashcam (footage) that (I realized that) it saved me (from) a moderate accident,” McQuinn wrote.

More than a convenient driver-assist system, Tesla’s Autopilot is a safety system designed to protect drivers on the road. Autopilot uses a suite of cameras, radar, and ultrasonic sensors, and artificial intelligence to observe a vehicle’s surroundings, and all these came into play when McQuinn’s Model 3 avoided getting sideswiped by the truck. Ultimately, the Model 3 owner’s experience is something that would likely become more common in the future, as Tesla rolls out more vehicles with Autopilot as a standard feature.

Tesla has been releasing vehicle safety reports for Autopilot over the past quarters, and so far, results suggest that the driver-assist system makes driving significantly safer. In the first quarter of 2019, for example, Tesla registered one accident for every 2.87 million miles driven in which drivers had Autopilot engaged, while one accident for every 1.76 million miles driven was recorded for vehicles that did not have Autopilot engaged. By comparison, the NHTSA’s most recent data reveals that in the United States, there is an automobile crash every 436,000 miles.

A recently leaked email from Tesla CEO Elon Musk has revealed that the electric car maker is seeing strong demand for its vehicles, though it would have to catch up to deliveries if it were to be definitively successful this quarter. Musk further noted that he would be holding regular calls with delivery teams from the United States, Asia, and Europe, to understand what is needed to optimize vehicle deliveries even more.

While our demand is strong, we have a lot of vehicle deliveries to catch up to in order to have a successful quarter.

Starting tomorrow, I will be holding skip-level calls with America, Asia, and Europe delivery teams every 2 days to understand what’s needed to accelerate the rate of deliveries.

We also need to address the total cost of getting a car from our factory to the customer. Last quarter, there were many expedites (sic) fees and routing inefficiencies that led to higher than expected delivery costs. This makes it much harder for Tesla ro (sic) break even.

Per my earlier email, if we execute well, Q2 will be an all-time record for Tesla vehicle deliveries and an awesome victory!!

Musk’s emphasis on accelerating deliveries and adopting efficiencies to get vehicles to customers faster suggests that Tesla is dead serious about avoiding the same pitfalls it encountered in the first quarter. During Q1 2019, Tesla’s deliveries experienced difficulties as the company began saturating international markets with the Model 3. This ultimately caused Tesla to engage in an intense delivery blitz in March that ended with over 10,000 vehicles in transit at the end of the first quarter.

This recently leaked email all but highlights a point mentioned by Musk in a previous message to employees, where he noted that Tesla is seeing strong demand for its electric cars this quarter. In that email, Musk pointed out that Tesla is on track to exceed its record delivery figures from Q4 2019, a quarter that saw the company deliver over 90,000 vehicles to customers. Nevertheless, Musk noted that to accomplish this, Tesla would have to hit a sustained Model 3 production rate of 1,000 units per day.

These recently leaked updates from the Tesla CEO refutes one of the most persistent bear thesis against the company, which suggests that its vehicles are seeing an alleged “demand cliff.” If Musk’s internal emails are any indication, it appears that Tesla’s electric cars remain popular among consumers despite the company’s lower-than-expected figures in the first quarter.

Tesla Model 3 protects owner by shaking off near-crash with swerving semi


A Tesla owner is thanking her Model 3’s safety features and stability after a near-miss with a swerving semitrailer in Nebraska. The harrowing incident resulted in the Model 3 fishtailing at high speed and driving into a median, then finding its traction and getting back on the road — grass, mud, bugs and all.

Vivianna Van Deerlin was driving her Long Range RWD Model 3 about 70 miles from Lincoln NE on I-80 when she encountered an unsettling sight on the road. Ahead of her, a massive semitrailer was swerving from side to side. She tried to overtake the semi carefully, but just as she was midway through the maneuver, the large truck swerved into her lane. The Model 3 was on Autopilot then, and she opted to take control of the vehicle to avoid the truck.

This caused her to fishtail and skid into the median. The incident happened while the Model 3 was traveling at 80 mph, but despite this speed, the vehicle refused to spin or roll over. Covered in grass from top to bottom, the car was able to get back on the road without any problems. None of the Model 3’s passengers were harmed, and the sedan proved tough enough to drive all the way to a service center where it could be checked for any needed repairs.

Looking at pictures of the aftermath and footage of the incident, it was evident that the Model 3 owner escaped what could very well have been a serious accident. Unfortunately, the video also revealed that the driver of the semitrailer, which caused the incident, didn’t stop to check up on the Model 3 or its passengers. It just drove on, seemingly oblivious of what transpired behind it.

The Tesla owner credits several aspects of her Model 3 for saving her and her husband’s life during the close call with the semi. She noted that her vehicle showed remarkable stability as she drove into the median thanks to its low center of gravity, and it promptly gained traction as soon as she floored it to avoid getting stuck on the muddy grass. Particularly notable was that the vehicle was an RWD version, which only had one electric motor.

In hindsight, Vivian noted that she might not have driven into the median had she not disengaged Autopilot. Past videos of Autopilot avoiding accidents, after all, show that the driver-assist system might have avoided the swerving semi without leaving the road. “Probably would’ve been better off letting AP continue but hard to know that in the moment. My reflexes just took over when the truck crossed over the white line, unfortunately there just wasn’t any shoulder to move into,” she wrote in an update on Twitter.

Fortunately, the vehicle incurred no damages from its grassy encounter. There was a ton of grass to be cleaned out and some remarkable dashcam footage to save, but apart from these, the Model 3 was completely fine.

Vivianna Van Deerlin is an active member of the Tesla community, organizing the Tesla Boot Camp program for new electric car owners. She and her husband Peter are also longtime Tesla owners, being one of the customers who placed a reservation for the Model S back in 2009 and taking delivery of the sedan in 2012. Apart from her Long Range RWD Model 3, she and her husband also own a Model 3 Performance and a rather rare 2010 Tesla Roadster Sport. In this particular trip, the Van Deerlins were taking a 3,000-mile journey from New Jersey to California to give their Long Range RWD Model 3 to their son. Thanks to the durability of the Model 3, the parents’ journey will continue.

Rivian really wants you to envision adventure with R1T’s mobile kitchen


Rivian has been on the move with publicity efforts surrounding a specialized kitchen set designed for their R1T truck’s gear tunnel that was unveiled at this year’s Overland Expo West in Flagstaff, Arizona. Several posts focused on the accessory have been published online recently to help jog potential customers’ imaginations and perhaps inspire a trip or two of their own with food at the forefront. It’s not just an idea being used as a photo prop, either. Rivian has confirmed the kitchen set will be available for sale when its R1T truck and R1S SUV are also hitting the market.

Shortly following the kitchen prototype’s debut, Rivian sent two company team members out on a Memorial Day overland trip to Sedona with the R1T wherein the portable dining station was put to use in the real world. Photos from the journey were subsequently shared via Rivian’s official social media, complete with Arizona’s red dirt and incredible mountain landscape in view. It’s probably safe to say the promo was successful in convincing audiences that the gear tunnel kitchen is a pretty cool accessory to have.

The R1T’s retractable kitchen includes two induction burners, cookware, utensils, and a sink with 5 gallons of water storage to both prep meals with and wash dishes. As demonstrated by Rivian’s Memorial Day road trippers, a ready-made way to cook up onions and peppers to enjoy with avocado and a desert sunrise definitely looks to be a scene that most of Rivian’s primary audience would enjoy. Overall, it’s a creative and convenient way to really tap into all the extra space Rivian’s flagship truck has to offer.

The debut of the kitchen accessory at an event like the Overland Expo makes sense for Rivian’s brand as well as an overland trip with the set itself. After all, overlanders are a creative bunch that embrace all the vehicle-supported living concepts they can imagine to get the most out of their travel experiences, and Rivian is promoting an electric adventure lifestyle in its product development and marketing. The company has also noted that the Overland Expo inspired its vehicle designs, and team members have attended prior expos to help fine tune their products to what future owners would be looking for.

Rivian’s gear tunnel itself gets a lot of coverage these days, and rightly so. Since the R1T doesn’t need to make room for all the extra parts needed for gas and diesel-powered engines, there’s tons of extra space for cargo, and a storage area separate from the truck bed provides the best of both traditional worlds for backend vehicle storage. The bed is great for hauling, as expected, and the gear tunnel is great as a “regular” trunk for things that are better suited to a more contained environment. The added convenience of using the gear tunnel’s door as a seat or stool is a bonus, and a significant one at that.

With the debut of the portable kitchen set, it looks like the Michigan-based startup has decided to tap into gear tunnel enthusiasm in the form of an add-on available direct from the factory. Albeit, with as creative as Rivian’s designs seem to be already, the aftermarket will probably fill up with numerous crazy and/or useful concepts that might be difficult to even imagine right now.

As Rivian’s brand expands, so will its loyalty and audience seeking custom parts and accessories, something that other auto makers with similar marketing focuses like Jeep have fostered over the years. Considering the highly visual and product-centric marketing efforts Rivian has already undertaken, a bright future of inspired utilization definitely looks to be ahead.

SpaceX Starship website spotted ahead of Elon Musk’s June rocket update


It appears that SpaceX is preparing a dedicated website for its proposed Starship point-to-point transport system, potentially capable of transporting dozens of passengers anywhere on Earth in just 30-60 minutes.

Assuming this website is actually a prelude to a SpaceX reveal (it could be completely unrelated), it seems likely that Starship.com will go live sometime around CEO Elon Musk’s planned June 20th update on Starship and Super Heavy. Much like Starlink.com went live on the day of SpaceX’s first dedicated launch, the company may be ready to tease more substantial details and fleshed-out plans for its aspirational Starship airline.

Big Falcon Challenge

Regardless of the theoretical viability of SpaceX’s Earth-to-Earth transport aspirations or the company’s readiness to kick off the publicity for the service, the fact remains that maturing Starship/Super Heavy (formerly BFR) into a system with reliability approaching that of airliners will take at least 5-10 years, if not decades. The idea itself – using reusable rockets to transport customers anywhere on Earth in 30-60 minutes at a cost comparable to business class tickets – is undeniably alluring and theoretically achievable. However, the list of “iff” statements that must first be satisfied for is immense and full of an array of technological firsts, any one of which could be a showstopper.

The greatest challenge of affordable, reliable point-to-point transport relates directly to the need for affordability and reliability. Put simply, rockets are in many ways far more complex than modern airliners, requiring margins of design and error and that would make commercial aircraft engineers blush. Modern FAA regulations currently expect manufacturers and operators to design, build, and fly passenger aircraft such that the chances of catastrophic failure (generally a fatal crash and total hull loss) average one in one billion flight hours. That may sound downright unachievable, but modern airliners routinely reach levels of reliability measured in hundreds of millions of flight hours between loss-of-life failures.

The best records of rocket reliability are currently held by Ariane 5 and Atlas V, reaching success streaks without catastrophic failure of 86 launches and 81 launches, respectively. It’s difficult to compare airliners and rockets, as rockets feature multiple stages and are typically only active for 30-90 minutes. Under the generous and inaccurate assumption that the average Ariane 5 mission accounts for 90 minutes of “flight time”, the most statistically reliable launch vehicle ever built is roughly 1,000,000 to 10,000,000 times less safe than the FAA’s present-day certification requirements. It would be more accurate to compare the distance traveled per catastrophic failure, but that would still indicate that the proven safety record of launch vehicles is perhaps 20,000 to 200,000 times worse than that of modern passenger aircraft.

BFR may have changed radically (and gained a new name) since its 2016 reveal, but SpaceX executives have continued to indicate that Earth-to-Earth transport remains a serious ambition for the company.

Extreme reusability: extreme reliability?

Additionally, most modern rockets are expended, although SpaceX is doing everything it can to flip that equation. The only conceivable way to sustain a real commercial market for suborbital, hypersonic passenger transportation – aside from guaranteeing that passengers are unlikely to die – is to implement a level of rapid reusability that is entirely unprecedented in spaceflight. As it turns out, regardless of any Earthbound spaceliner ambitions the company may have, SpaceX’s ultimate mission is to accomplish precisely that goal, albeit in order to colonize Mars in a practical timeframe.

What has never explicitly been a part of SpaceX’s goal, however, is achieving that level of extreme reusability simultaneously alongside airliner-class reliability. Accepting high levels of risk has always been front and center to Elon Musk’s presentations on SpaceX’s BFR-powered Mars ambitions, with the CEO often indicating that chances of death would be quite high on early missions to the Red Planet. Of course, surviving and building a colony on Mars is a fair bit riskier than anything specifically centered around Earth and suborbital flight regimes.

To make it to Mars, Starship will have to launch, refuel 3-10 times in Earth orbit, undergo a 3-6 month journey through deep space, put extreme stress on its heat shield during Mars aerobraking and reentry, and then land on another planet. For Earth-to-Earth missions, Starship would be subjected to comparatively gentle reentries of ~7.5 km/s, lower than orbital velocity. (SpaceX)

All of this is to say that SpaceX may or may not succeed in its ambition of developing a spacecraft/booster that is as extraordinarily reliable as it is reusable, just as SpaceX may or may not publish a website dedicated to Earth-to-Earth Starship transport sometime next month. First look at Tesla’s adaptive suspension for the Model S and X refresh


A recent video from a Tesla owner-enthusiast has provided a first look at the electric car maker’s newly-introduced Adaptive Suspension system for the “Raven” Model S and Model X. When Tesla announced Adaptive Suspension, the electric car maker described it as a system designed to give drivers an “ultra-cushioned feel when cruising on the highway or using Autopilot, and a responsive, exhilarating confidence during dynamic driving.”

Tesla owner-enthusiast DÆrik was fortunate enough to get his hands on a recently-bought Tesla Model S Long Range (formerly the 100D), which was equipped with 21” wheels. A comparison between the suspension on older Model S and the new “Raven” Model S clearly showed that the new vehicle had a completely different suspension setup. Quite interestingly, the Adaptive Suspension system in the Model S Long Range looks quite similar to Maxwell Technologies’ own Active Suspension system

Tesla described Adaptive Suspension in the new Model S’ user manual:

“ADAPTIVE SUSPENSION DAMPING: Choose from STANDARD or SPORT to adjust the feel of the suspension system. STANDARD provides a softer and more fluid ride whereas SPORT provides a firmer, more controlled ride that increases driver engagement and connection to the road.”

A road test comparing the vibration levels of the newer Model S and an older Model S showed that the newer vehicle was capable of offering a much comfortable ride. The Tesla owner-enthusiast tested the new Model S on both Sport and Standard Adaptive Suspension settings, and both were notably smoother than the ride offered by an older Model S. The “Raven” Model S used in the test was equipped with 21” wheels as well, which are not optimized for comfort. With 19” wheels, the new Model S would likely have offered an even smoother ride.

As with many of Tesla’s new features for its vehicles, Adaptive Suspension is specifically designed to be upgradeable through over-the-air software updates. As such, more improvements to the system could be expected in the near future.

Being closely related to the Model S and Model X’s ability to “sense” the road, the system could work very well with Tesla’s neural network improvements. Tesla describes Fully Adaptive Suspension as a system where the car’s software will determine a vehicle’s dampening based on calculations of road conditions. A neural network trained to determine these road conditions ahead of time, and then preemptively adapt the suspension without input, would be a perfect matchup for the technologies. This could ultimately ensure that when Tesla rolls out its Full Self-Driving suite, Model S and Model X owners can be assured that their ride will be as comfortable as possible.
