Tesla releases Navigate on Autopilot for China as regulations ease for EV registrations


A storm is brewing in China, and it could end up playing into Tesla’s favor. Amidst the company’s release of Navigate on Autopilot for Chinese markets, government regulations for electric vehicle registrations have also been updated, paving the way for a flood of EVs such as the Model 3 to be sold and delivered at numbers never seen before.

With the near-completion of the factory shell of Gigafactory 3 in May, Tesla has been putting the pedal to the metal in its marketing efforts for the Chinese market. So far, the company has rolled out a compelling loan and leasing program, as well as opened pre-orders for locally-made Model 3, which will be manufactured in Gigafactory 3. On Thursday, Tesla also released Navigate on Autopilot for the Chinese market, allowing its local customers to enjoy the company’s most robust driver-assist feature to date.

In what could very well be a stroke of luck, the China National Reform and Development Commission also released a new policy barring local governments across the nation to enact restrictions on electric vehicle registrations. Prior to this update, Tier 1 cities such as Beijing and Shanghai have adopted strategies such as license plate quotas to control the number of vehicles registrations per year.

Beijing, for example, generally required prospective car buyers to get license plate numbers through a lottery. EV buyers are given a bit more leeway, since they are only required to queue up their license plate applications. Considering that the city has a quota of 60,000 EVs per year under the prior system, EV buyers could end up waiting a long time before they are issued a license plate for their electric cars.

While inconvenient, it should be noted that this wait time is still far more convenient than what is experienced by buyers of internal combustion vehicles in Beijing. Apart from having to participate in a lottery for license plates, buyers of ICE cars are also required to follow “limit days,” where their vehicles are forbidden on roads at certain days of the week.

Under the terms of the new regulations, local governments and enterprises are required to give policy support for electric vehicles in terms of purchase restrictions, and even parking fees, among others. Previous restrictions have also been cancelled. This update could ultimately open a torrent of new electric car purchases in China’s Tier 1 cities, as buyers are now more incentivized to purchase an EV. This, of course, could significantly benefit Tesla.

Tesla is currently saturating the Chinese market with the Model 3, though it should be noted that the company is only partly done with its push into the lucrative Chinese market. With Gigafactory 3’s workers seemingly shifting their efforts to the facility’s interior, Tesla might very well reach its goal of producing Made-in-China Model 3s by the end of the year. If Tesla accomplishes this, then the company’s future in China might very well become even brighter.

Tesla immerses itself in Chinese culture as Gigafactory 3 sees machinery setup


On the heels of the near-completion of Gigafactory 3’s factory shell, Tesla appears to be setting itself up as an electric car maker that is down-to-earth and respectful of China’s culture. As Tesla joins China in celebrating a national holiday, reports have emerged pointing to machinery in Gigafactory 3 already being set up inside the facility.

China recently celebrated its Dragon Boat Festival, a national holiday that is largely connected to the death of Qu Yuan, one of the country’s most notable poets who was accused of treason by the ruling class. Legend states that the poet committed suicide by drowning instead of allowing himself to be captured by the authorities, but his body was saved after locals raced out in boats (hence the Dragon Boats) to scatter rice in the water, preventing fish from desecrating his corpse.

References to this legend were present in greetings that Tesla sent out to everyone on the company’s mailing list in the days leading up to the national holiday. One poster, in particular, featured the unmistakable figure of a Dragon Boat, while another resembled the sticky rice dumplings that are eaten to celebrate the holiday.

Also notable was Tesla’s initiative to tap into the younger Chinese demographic. This Friday and Saturday, China is holding its national college entrance examination called the Gaokao, which is widely considered as one of the toughest tests in the world. Considering that the scores of students taking the Gaokao all but determine their chances at higher education (such as where they are allowed to study or what courses they could take), high schoolers are known to face a ton of stress when preparing for the nationwide test.

In the days leading up to the Gaokao, Tesla shared a number of fun Physics reviewers on Chinese social media, giving students a refresher on concepts that are relevant to the company. While these campaigns might seem minor to territories outside China, such a strategy all but ensures that Tesla becomes a familiar brand to the country’s teens, who will be the nation’s car buyers in a few years.

Tesla’s recent gestures all but suggest that the company is taking careful steps to ensure that it immerses itself in Chinese culture without making any missteps. China is a substantial market for automobiles, and other, more established companies have made mistakes of their own in the past. Mercedes-Benz, for one, simply entered China under the brand name “Bensi” (a direct translation of its Western name), only to realize later on that the name they chose literally meant “rush to die.”

Peugeot ended up committing a notable blunder as well, naming itself “Biāozhì” in China. The name generally translated to “beautiful,” which was not bad, but the carmaker ended up neglecting the fact that in some areas of the country, the word “biǎozi” was the word for “prostitute.” This resulted in Peugeot becoming the subject of immense ridicule online.

As the country celebrated its Dragon Boat Festival, work in Gigafactory 3 seemingly continued as well. As noted by China-based Tesla owner Dennis Chang, who visited the Gigafactory 3 site at night, machinery was already being set up in the facility’s interior. Workers at the factory have reportedly noted that initial operations are set to begin sometime in August at the earliest.

Gigafactory 3 has exceeded expectations in terms of the speed of its buildout. When Elon Musk participated in the facility’s groundbreaking ceremony in January, he noted that he expects Model 3 production to start at the end of the year. Considering the speed of the facility’s buildout so far, Musk’s timeframe might actually end up being conservative.

Tesla Model 3 dubbed as fastest charging car in Europe by Top Gear


Tesla might be a young carmaker that is yet to master all the processes honed by its more experienced competitors in the auto industry, but it is arguably a company that has honed the subtleties of electric vehicle manufacturing and design over the years. One of the best examples of this lies in its vehicles’ charging capabilities, which remain among the best in the world.

If popular auto publication Top Gear’s word is any indication, it appears that the charging capabilities could very well be the best in the industry. The publication recently dubbed the Tesla Model 3 the “fastest charging car in the world,” and for a good reason. Thanks to a firmware update that Tesla is rolling out this weekend, European Long Range Model 3 variants will be capable of charging at 200 kW when they are connected to the region’s “ultrafast chargers.”

A charging rate of 200 kW roughly equates to around 850 miles per hour, which should significantly reduce the times it takes to charge a Tesla during long trips. This is a notable breakthrough for the company’s vehicles, as they have taken a valuable step forward in closing the gap between the charging time of an EV and the refueling time of an internal combustion car.

What is rather remarkable is that the Model 3 is actually capable of charging faster than 200 kW. Tesla recently rolled out its Supercharger V3 network, which supports peak rates of up to 250 kW per vehicle. This allows Long Range Model 3 variants to gain 75 miles worth of range in just 5 minutes at a rate of up to 1,000 miles per hour. Tesla highlighted this in a statement to Top Gear, pointing out that “When our own V3 Supercharger technology is introduced, these cars will be able to charge even faster at 250kW peak charge rates.”

Tesla’s Supercharger V3 network is already starting its rollout, but even the company’s V2 chargers have received improvements from the electric car maker. Recent updates rolled out by the company have unlocked charge rates of up to 150 kW from the V2 stations, which, together with on-route battery warmup features, allow the Model S and X to reduce their charging times by 25%.

Tesla is among the electric car makers today that had enough foresight to establish an extensive rapid charging network for its vehicles years before manufacturing its first high-volume car. With Supercharger V3’s rollout, improvements to the V2 network, and the Model 3’s compatibility with the region’s 200 kW ultrafast chargers, European Tesla owners can be assured that their vehicles are less likely to experience a lack of charging stations.

Tesla Sentry Mode catches man spraying acid on Model 3 over parking disagreement


Tesla’s Sentry Mode has once again captured an act of vandalism, this time identifying a Model 3 owner’s neighbor inconspicuously spraying acid on the side of their vehicle at night in Anaheim, California. The motivation for the incident is thought to be related to parking disagreements between the suspect and the owner.

In video footage captured shortly after vehicle Mode was activated and later uploaded to Twitter, a man is seen slowly encircling the car with a bottle in hand, spraying its contents around the circumference of the vehicle. The substance in the container was not specifically identified, but the owner described it as a skin irritant similar to battery acid. At this time, a report has been filed with local police on the matter, and a damage assessment and repair estimate are pending completion before additional courses of action are pursued.

In a tweet describing the reporting process experienced while seeking justice for the vandalism, the Model 3 owner stated that the police recommended an assessment be completed first. “They said. And these are the exact words. Do you want to press any charges? If so you will have to find out how much the damages are then it will go from there,” he detailed on Twitter. Of particular interest is whether the acid used ate through the car’s ceramic coat. If the paint under the coat was damaged, the repair cost will be significantly higher than if not.

Sentry Mode has proven itself to be incredibly useful for Tesla owners. Since its release, it has assisted in identifying vandals, thieves, and hit-and-run suspects, as well as prevented insurance fraud claims. The security feature was created partly in response to a string of break-ins that seemed to be specifically targeting Tesla cars, and it operates primarily by automatically saving video footage from before and after a possible threat to the vehicle is sensed by its cameras. If an intrusion is detected, it plays Johann Sebastian Bach’s Toccata and Fugue in D Minor at a loud volume to bring as much attention to all-electric car as possible.

Other features have been added since Sentry Mode’s initial release to make it easier to use. A dedicated button matching the “eye” of the HAL-9000-styled screen displayed when the feature is active was added to the center touchscreen, and the feature can also activate when the car is put in park. More recently, voice command activation was also provided via an over-the-air update that allows Sentry Mode to be set using the phrase “Keep Summer Safe” from the Rick and Morty cartoon. Both of these updates are a nod to CEO Elon Musk’s fondness of including fun pop culture references in Tesla vehicles.

Sentry Mode now also has location-based activation options such “Exclude Home” and “Exclude Work”, among others. These options assure that Tesla owners’ vehicles will not trigger the security system while it is parked in places like their garage. As made obvious by this recent attack, however, some owners don’t seem to have a place where Sentry Mode can take a break.

Next-gen Tesla Model S/X rumored to have 3 electric motors, 400+ mile range


In a recent report, news publication CNBC noted that Tesla is rejiggering parts of its Fremont factory to make way for both the production of the Model S and X refresh and the Model Y. According to the publication, the information about Tesla’s updated Model S and X vehicles was related by multiple sources.

Just recently, some details of Tesla’s Model S and Model X refresh were shared by a Tesla insider to owner-enthusiast YouTube channel Like Tesla. In a short video, Kim, the channel’s host, outlined a number of details that the Tesla insider shared about potential improvements coming to the Model S and Model X. These include updates to the flagship vehicles’ motors, batteries, and charging systems, to name a few.

First off, the Model S and Model X refresh that the electric car maker is preparing to introduce later this year will potentially feature a tri-motor design, with one small motor in the front and two larger motors at the rear. The upcoming vehicles will further establish Tesla’s lead in terms of range as well, with the Model S refresh reportedly going for an EPA rating north of 400 miles (644 km) per charge, and the Model X nearing the 400-mile per charge mark.

The refreshed flagship vehicles will potentially be fitted with larger and lighter battery packs, which will provide a bit of increased performance and even more range. Tesla is reportedly adopting a new cooling system for the Model S and Model X refresh’s motors and batteries too. These new cooling systems are currently being tested under extreme heat in areas such as the Mojave Desert and Death Valley, according to the Tesla insider.

The specifics of the Model S and Model X refresh’s updated batteries were not disclosed by the Tesla insider, though it was mentioned that the upcoming vehicles would be compatible with the Supercharger V3 Network. This should allow the flagship sedan and SUV to charge at 250 kW, just like its smaller sibling, the Model 3. The refreshed Model S and Model X are reportedly expected to be unveiled sometime later this year.

While Elon Musk has largely downplayed a potential refresh for the Model S and Model X, the company has been taking active steps to improve its flagship vehicles. Last April, Tesla rolled out updates to the flagship sedan and SUV, with the former being given a range of 370 miles per charge, and both vehicles receiving a revamped adaptive suspension setup. Perhaps Tesla is preparing to feature the refreshed Model S and Model X another in another surprise reveal at the Tesla pickup truck reveal? One can only hope.

SpaceX Cargo Dragon capsule ends its second flawless trip to space and back


On June 4th, SpaceX Cargo Dragon capsule C113 departed from the International Space Station 250 miles (400 km) above Earth’s surface, tapped its thruster ‘brakes’, and reentered the atmosphere soon after.

After a month spent in orbit, the uncrewed Dragon returned more than 1900 kg (4200 lb) to Earth, currently the only operational spacecraft on Earth capable of doing so. Per usual, Cargo Dragon splashed down off the coast of California, was picked up by SpaceX vessel NRC Quest, and arrived at Port of Los Angeles a few hours later. Captured by Teslarati photographer Pauline Acalin in spectacular detail, C113’s second successful orbital mission serves as excellent foreshadowing for a follow-up launch – CRS-18 – that could come as soon as July 21st.

Orbital-class marshmallows

As per usual, Cargo Dragon received a healthy dose of charring during its orbital-velocity Earth reentry, barreling through the atmosphere at a blistering 7.7 km/s (4.8 mi/s, Mach 23). The capsule’s orientation during reentry is essentially seared into its hull by its own heat shield-generated plasma trail, creating the distinct dark-brown and black streaks visible in photos.

Although the visible wear and tear might look dramatic, the reality is SpaceX’s Dragon spacecraft are specifically designed to survive the ordeal of Earth reentry in excellent shape – the ablative heat shield takes nearly all (~99%) of the heating-related stress. Cargo Dragon (and Crew Dragon, for that matter) are just shy of encased in a cocoon of a different type of foam-like thermal protection material, visible as Dragon’s pearly white skin prior to reentry.

CRS-18 crests the horizon

NASA and SpaceX have already scheduled Cargo Dragon’s next launch to the International Space Station on July 21st, a brisk 85 days after CRS-17’s successful launch. To make that date, preparations are already well underway and Cargo Dragon will likely ship from California within the next two weeks if it’s not already in Florida. Having successfully supported Cargo Dragon’s CRS-17 mission one month ago, Falcon 9 B1056.2 is scheduled to become the first flight-proven Block 5 booster to launch a dedicated NASA mission and the space agency is even open to using B1056 for a third time on CRS-19.

Beyond NASA’s Block 5 booster reuse milestone, there is also a good chance that CRS-18 will mark SpaceX’s first launch of an already twice-flown and refurbished Cargo Dragon capsule. Since CRS-10 (February 2017), just one of SpaceX’s seven subsequent Cargo Dragon launches has flown with a new capsule, and all of the company’s remaining CRS missions are expected to use refurbished spacecraft. Although one mystery Cargo Dragon capsule (C107) remains publicly unaccounted for, chances are quite good that CRS-18 will mark the first time a commercial space capsule has reached orbit three times.

Assuming SpaceX’s third refurbishment follows the fairly consistent two-year time scale of past Dragon reflights, Cargo Dragon C106 – the first Dragon SpaceX reused – will likely be CRS-18’s capsule.

First look at Tesla’s updated Enhanced Summon in action


An updated version of Tesla’s Enhanced Summon – a set of new capabilities that allow drivers to operate their vehicle through the Tesla mobile app – has been released in software version 2019.20 for owners in the Early Access Program. A recent video showing the feature in action on a Model 3 reveals a smoother and faster journey to its summoned location compared to the feature’s prior releases.

This latest video doesn’t challenge the Model 3 with obstacles on its path; however, a previously published demonstration of the feature showed accurate detection of obstacles in a busier parking lot. Vehicle movement was rigid and much slower then, however, whereas the feature in the 2019.20 release drives with more confidence. Similar to previous releases of the feature, the Model 3 in the 2019.20 Enhanced Summon demonstration simply followed the shortest route to its operator.

The current iteration of Summon utilizes a vehicle’s ultrasonic sensors to move forward and backward in a straight line, whereas the new version utilizes data from Autopilot cameras to allow the car to drive itself to a destination. It also has a maximum call distance of 150 feet. Self-parking and reading parking lot signs to determine whether a space has any restrictions are expected to be part of the feature next year with a further update.

Tesla CEO Elon Musk teased last month that the final release of Enhanced Summon was ‘almost ready’ and that he was personally testing the feature. It should be noted that “soon” has been the timeline for release of the feature since last year, but since Tesla is already rolling out the beta version, wider public releases are likely to come sooner rather than later this time. Clarification on the name should also come, too. Musk has responded to references and/or referred to the feature as “enhanced”, “advanced”, and “smart” on various occasions.

Tesla’s Enhanced Summon, together with the company’s Navigate on Autopilot with unconfirmed lane changes, is part of the company’s Full Self-Driving suite, which CEO Elon Musk expects to be “feature complete” by the end of the year. Musk has ambitious plans for Enhanced Summon, stating that in the near future, a Tesla “should be able to drive around a parking lot, find an empty spot, read signs to confirm it’s valid & park.”

SpaceX Falcon 9 and $1B satellite trio set for first California launch in months


After the better part of both half a year of launch delays and launch pad inactivity, SpaceX and Falcon 9 are ready to return the company’s California-based SLC-4 facilities to action with the launch of the $1 billion Radarsat Constellation Mission (RCM).

Built by Maxar for the Canadian Space Agency (CSA), RCM is a trio of remote-sensing spacecraft designed with large surface-scanning radars as their primary payload. Having suffered years of technical delays during Maxar’s production process, RCM was initially available for launch as early as November 2018. In an unlucky turn of events, issues on the SpaceX side of things took RCM’s assigned Falcon 9 booster out of commission and lead to an additional seven or so months of launch delays. At long last, RCM is just one week away from heading to orbit, scheduled to launch from Vandenberg Air Force Base (VAFB) no earlier than 7:17 am PDT (14:17 UTC), June 11th.

The Goldilocks booster

Once the three RCM satellites were effectively complete, a series of unfortunate circumstances combined to delay the constellation’s launch almost indefinitely. The first domino fell in December 2018, when Falcon 9 Block 5 booster B1050 – having successfully supported Cargo Dragon’s CRS-16 launch – suffered a failure that prevented a successful landing. Incredibly, the booster did survive its accidental Atlantic Ocean landing and is now sitting in a SpaceX hangar, but B1051 is unlikely to ever fly again.

This posed a problem for Maxar and the Canadian Space Agency (CSA), who seem to have contractually requested that RCM launch on either a new or very gently flight-proven Falcon 9 booster. The problem: SpaceX had none of either option available for RCM after B1050’s unplanned swim and needed to balance the needs of several other important customers. Several Block 5 boosters were technically available but all had two or even three previous launches under their belts.

Moving into 2019, SpaceX is likely just months away from its next triple and quadruple-reuse milestones.

Meanwhile, SpaceX’s booster production had been almost entirely focused (and would remain so months after) on building four new Falcon Heavy boosters and the first expendable Falcon 9 Block 5 booster, reserved for the US Air Force and a long-delayed customer. Since those five boosters were completed and shipped out, just one additional booster (B1056) has been finished, launching Cargo Dragon’s CRS-17 mission just one month ago.

In short, had Maxar/CSA waited for a new booster, RCM’s launch would likely be delayed at least another 30-60 days beyond its current target of June 11th. Instead, they downselected to Falcon 9 B1051, then in the midst of several months of prelaunch preparations for Crew Dragon’s launch debut (DM-1). DM-1 went off without a hitch in early March, after which the gently-used B1051 underwent a brisk ~45 days of inspection and refurbishment before heading west to SpaceX’s VAFB launch pad.

Billion Dollar Babies

From an external perspective, forgoing a twice or thrice-flown Falcon 9 Block 5 booster after nearly a dozen successful demonstrations does not exactly appear to be a rational decision. However, whether it was motivated by conservatism, risk-aversion, or something else, Maxar and CSA likely have every contractual right to demand certain conditions, as long as they accept the consequences of those requirements. In the case of RCM, the customers accepted what they likely knew would be months of guaranteed delays to minimize something they perceived as a risk.

To some extent, it’s hard to blame them. After going more than $400M over budget, the Maxar-built trio of upgraded Radarsat satellites are expected to end up costing more than $1 billion. CSA’s annual budget typically stands around $250M, meaning that this single launch is equivalent to four years of space agency’s entire budget. A failed launch would be a huge setback. Additionally, RCM will likely become the most valuable payload ever launched by SpaceX, beating out the Air Force’s ~$600M GPS III SV01 spacecraft by a huge margin. For RCM, mission assurance is definitively second to none.

If all goes as planned, Falcon 9’s RCM launch should also mark the second use of SpaceX’s West Coast landing zone (LZ-4), christened during the October 2018 launch of SAOCOM 1A – coincidentally, also a radar-carrying Earth observation satellite. This means that press photographers (including Teslarati’s Pauline Acalin and Tom Cross) will have their second chance ever to capture remote images of a SpaceX booster landing.

Tesla (TSLA) rebounds as Model 3 sales start crushing ‘demand problem’ narrative


Tesla stock (NASDAQ:TSLA) continued its recovery on Thursday amid Wall Street’s seemingly improving sentiments on the company and the existing demand for its vehicles, particularly the Model 3. Far from the incredibly negative coverage that Tesla received in recent weeks, analysts such as Morgan Stanley’s Adam Jonas have revised their stance on the electric car maker, stating that Tesla could be poised to pleasantly surprise in the second quarter.

In a note to investors on Wednesday, Jonas stated that the month of May saw Tesla continue to “to extend its lead vs. a still-small group of true electric vehicle competitors.” The analyst added that Tesla’s estimated total US sales in May, which is speculated to be around 11,300 vehicles, was 2.6 times the combined total of competitors such as the Audi e-tron, Jaguar I-PACE, BMW i3, Nissan Leaf, and the Chevy Bolt EV, a vehicle once-dubbed as a potential “Tesla Killer.”

Jonas’ note on Wednesday struck a different tone than his previous bearish note on the company, where he gave TSLA stock a “worst case” price target of just $10 per share. During his previous note, Jonas remarked that Tesla is no longer seen as a growth story, but rather, a “distressed credit and restructuring story.” Most of these sentiments were quite absent in the analyst’s note on Wednesday.

JMP Securities analysts Joseph Osha and Hilary Cauley also adopted an optimistic stance on Tesla in a recent note to investors. According to the analysts, Tesla’s performance from April to May, particularly with regards to Model 3 registrations, were encouraging. “More Model 3s were registered in April and May than during all of the first quarter. It is evident that Tesla’s Q2 volume should recover significantly from Q1,” the analysts wrote.

With his more optimistic stance, Morgan Stanley expects Tesla to deliver between 360,000 to 400,000 vehicles this year, which represents an “increase of approximately 45% to 65% compared to 2018,” according to the analyst. JMP, for its part, noted that it expects Tesla’s 2019 deliveries to “very slightly to 378,900 units from 379,600,” in relation to the increasing volume of lower-priced vehicles such as the Standard Range Plus Model 3 and the potential decline in higher-end electric cars like the Model S and Model X.

Tesla’s steep decline over the past weeks centered in no small part on pervading concerns about the alleged demand problems being experienced by the company’s vehicles. With sales figures showing the opposite, and with reports from Tesla owners hinting that the company is currently putting preference to custom orders, it appears that the winds are now changing for the electric car maker.  Eddie Yoon, a think tank and advisory firm founder, recently observed that the current state of TSLA stock resembles that of Netflix back in 2011, right before the streaming giant started an eight-year rise that propelled it to record heights.

As of writing, Tesla stock is trading +5.55% at $207.51 per share.

Rivian R1T and R1S will feature vehicle-to-vehicle charging, says CEO


Rivian CEO RJ Scaringe recently shared some new insights about the R1T pickup truck and the R1S SUV in an interview with auto publication The Drive. During his interview, Scaringe discussed Rivian’s battery technology, the company’s plans for the vehicles charging systems, and the media’s usual comparisons between himself and Tesla CEO Elon Musk.

Rivian’s trucks are luxury adventure vehicles, and they are designed to carry several people in off-road conditions. As such, it is pertinent for Rivians to have the best battery technology available. When asked by the publication about the R1T and the R1S’s capability to charge its batteries, the CEO noted that the all-electric trucks would be capable of putting 200 miles of range in 30 minutes. With their 180 kWh battery packs, Scaringe pointed out that a 400-mile range is very feasible.

In the event that Rivian owners find themselves in remote areas without easy access to a charging station, Scaringe noted that the company is preparing solutions that will enable drivers to recharge their vehicles off the grid, such as auxiliary battery packs. The CEO also added that the company would allow vehicle-to-vehicle charging, allowing two Rivians to charge each other. “We’ve designed the vehicle so you can have auxiliary battery packs. You can also charge Rivian-to-Rivian, which is a neat thing. You connect the two vehicles, and then I could hand you some electrons,” Scaringe said.

These solutions will most definitely make Rivian’s vehicles an attractive purchase for the luxury adventure demographic, particularly among overlanders, who are known for taking long trips off the grid. Using Rivian’s vehicle-to-vehicle charging system, groups of overlanders can simply utilize a Rivian truck loaded with auxiliary battery packs as a designated charger for other vehicles that will be used primarily for camping, or even cooking, for that matter.

Being an electric car maker and having a striking physical resemblance to Clark Kent, Rivian CEO RJ Scaringe has been compared to Tesla’s Elon Musk, whose bold, ambitious, and rockstar CEO persona has brought comparisons to billionaire-superhero Tony Stark. Back in February alone, Forbes even wrote an article about Scaringe, dubbing him and Rivian as “Tesla’s worst nightmare.” In his recent interview, the Rivian CEO noted that this is far from the truth.

“In so far as we both build electric cars, we’re similar. Other than that, we’re building very different types of products for different companies. I say that with the deepest admiration and respect for what they’ve done. Tesla has really helped make electric cars exciting. They’ve helped shift the world towards electrification. We as Rivian, and we as the planet, owe them a thank you. But I think there’s a need for more flavors.

“The world needs more than one new electric and new innovator within the space, and we’ve been thoughtful also to not try to compete directly in the space they’re in. If we’re going after that type of a use case, I think it doesn’t make any sense. There are companies that are doing that. There’s a number of Chinese backed companies that are doing products that are very similar to the brand experience and sort of product experience that you get with Tesla,” he said.

Since unveiling the R1T pickup truck and the R1S SUV last year, Rivian has received overwhelming support from the electric car community, thanks in part to the design and capabilities of its two vehicles. The company has also been receiving support from large investors such as Ford and Amazon, both of which have helped Rivian raise over $1 billion in investments.
