Rivian’s RJ Scaringe talks on-site farming plans for employees, battery storage solutions


Rivian CEO RJ Scaringe recently shared insights about the company’s psychology in a livestreamed conversation with professional rock climber Alex Honnold and Rich Roll, a long-time wellness advocate and endurance athlete. As Rivian develops the manufacturing capabilities necessary to build its all-electric R1T pickup truck and R1S SUV at market scale, serious consideration is going into how to harness their team’s energy into an industrial system that works for everyone involved.

“So, industrial systems you have very often are very much class-based system – the white collar workforce, the blue collar workforce – there’s a whole host of things that lead those two sides to often having friction. We see how unions have come in to sort of help try to make those two work a little bit better together. But, a big part of what we’re doing right now is actually mapping out and thinking about the psychology of our company and the psychology of this facility,” Scaringe detailed during the event.

One of the unique things Rivian has inherited during its growth into a full-fledged auto manufacturer is the work force from the 2.6 million square foot plant the company purchased from Mitsubishi. Scaringe described the human story of the facility as “remarkable”, citing how many of the people currently there were part of the original launch team that later had to shut the facility down.

“So, 1989-1990, there are people that are 21-22 years old, they launched the facility….25-30 years go by, they’re part of the team running it, building it, now have to shut this facility down,” Scaringe described. “When we bought the facility, we not only just got the hardware, the acreages of land…[Now] we’ve got a team of people that’s passionate about restarting the facility.”

The company hopes the motivation to restart the plant under a Rivian badge will carry over into a win-win for all involved.

“It’s really remarkable. I mean, I think we’ve got a gift to work with in terms of that level of energy and that passion to bring it back to life,” the CEO said. “As we think about how do we take this gift that we’ve been given in terms of a workforce that’s so motivated, and how do we challenge a lot of the conventions that have been built up in terms of industrial systems…we’re doing a lot of things in the facility to really take that energy and supercharge it, really harvest it.”

One of the ideas Rivian is working to benefit on-site employees utilizes the resources inherited from the plant itself. The acreage surrounding the actual facility isn’t entirely needed for production purposes, so the car maker is planning to partner with local universities for food production from ground to plate.

“We have 508 acres at the plant, a very small percent of which actually has the plant occupying it – most of it’s just grass. We’re gonna be turning a lot of that into an area to grow food. And we’re gonna run that in partnership with some of the local universities through their agriculture programs to grow food locally on our site…and then that food’s gonna be served in our facility with students that are learning from top chefs we’re bringing in to run the food services in our facility, and we’re gonna provide incredible food to our plant team regardless of what part of the plant you work in,” Scaringe revealed.

“[That way]…there’s true equity. Every employee is part of this mission of bringing this facility back up. And that positive energy that we’re establishing at the plant, we want it to be a benchmark for how industrial systems are run – the collaboration, the communication between groups, between our other facilities.”

The conversation with Rich Roll and Alex Honnold primarily involved another part of the company’s psychology – helping to accelerate widespread adoption of renewable energy. Rivian has partnered with the Honnold Foundation to use the electric truck maker’s “second-life” auto batteries for a micro-grid solar system in Adjuntas, Puerto Rico. Through this project and others in the future, older battery cells that are no longer efficient for electric vehicles are repurposed into stationary energy storage units.

Adjuntas was selected as their first project site due to the town’s need for energy assistance after struggling in the wake of Hurricane Maria in 2017. The Honnold Foundation and Rivian will be using 135 kWh battery packs from R1T and R1S development vehicles for that particular grid project; however, cells going into Rivian’s production vehicles have been purposefully designed to have a “second life” in energy storage. The move towards energy projects marks a huge step for Rivian, signaling its expansion beyond the manufacture of all-electric luxury adventure vehicles.

Rivian’s first vehicle deliveries to customers are still planned for the end of 2020. Scaringe said during the event that around 800 members of their preorder community, i.e., reservation holders, were in attendance at the event with Roll and Honnold, so a further manufacturing update was provided with that in mind.

“There’s a lot of stuff happening [at the plant]. We’re moving equipment, we’re putting new equipment in. We’ve got amazingly talented people working day and night to bring that facility up and start delivering cars as quickly as possible,” he promised.

Tesla’s owner-volunteers from China mobilize to help end-of-Q2 deliveries


Tesla’s second-quarter deliveries in China are getting a rather unexpected boost, thanks to a number of electric car owners who are volunteering their time to help the company hand over as many vehicles as possible before the end of the month. Tesla is currently attempting to set new delivery records this Q2, and it would take every one of its delivery teams across the globe to dig deep to achieve its goal of beating Q4 2018’s numbers. The fourth quarter, after all, was a time when Tesla delivered more than 90,000 vehicles globally.

Reports from local Model 3 owners in China indicate that several owners have already become more involved in Tesla’s end-of-quarter delivery blitz. Similar to their counterparts in the United States, the Beijing-based Model 3 owners are helping new buyers get familiarized with their new vehicles. Some electric car owners have been doing this in actual delivery centers, while others are doing their part by providing useful information online. One Model 3 owner, who took delivery of his vehicle back in March, has even remarked that the cars coming to China today exhibit improved build quality.

Tesla has a tendency to accelerate deliveries towards the end of a quarter, and this has allowed the company to hit delivery records multiple times in the past. Even in the first quarter, which saw the company deliver significantly fewer vehicles than expected, Elon Musk noted that a good part of the company’s deliveries happened in the last two weeks of March. During a similar time last year, something rather remarkable happened.

Tesla was in a much different situation back in Q3 2018. Model 3 production was finally hitting Musk’s goal of around 5,000 vehicles per week then, and with thousands of cars to deliver every week, Tesla experienced what the CEO described as “delivery logistics hell.” This resulted in some Model 3 deliveries being pushed back multiple times, since Tesla’s delivery teams were, quite simply, overwhelmed. It was at this time when a Tesla owner-enthusiast and Ride the Lightning podcast host Ryan McAffrey suggested that electric car owners could offer some help in handing over vehicles to new owners. Musk loved the idea.

This started what could only be described as a community-powered delivery blitz that saw Tesla owners volunteering their time to help new owners get familiarized with their vehicles. Others even brought food and refreshments for new owners and fellow volunteers. YouTube influencers, longtime Tesla owners, and new Model 3 owners alike all volunteered their time. Together with Tesla executives such as Musk, who also delivered vehicles himself, these initiatives helped the company reach then-record delivery figures, eventually beating Wall St. revenue estimates by posting $6.8 billion in revenue with a GAAP profit of $312 million.

As could be seen in the efforts of Tesla owners in China, this willingness to help the company is not only true for electric car owners in the United States. Even in a place such as China, where the Model 3 only started deliveries earlier this year, owners are volunteering their time to help out the company. This is quite remarkable, and it all but shows the strength of Tesla’s brand. Slowly but surely, and despite the negative narrative surrounding the electric car maker, it appears that Tesla is transitioning from a disruptive electric car company to an idea, or even a movement of sorts. And this could very well be one of Tesla’s biggest strengths today.

SpaceX’s first flight-proven Falcon Heavy Block 5 rocket ready for static fire test


According to NASASpaceflight.com, SpaceX is just ~48 hours away from Falcon Heavy Flight 3’s critical static fire test, in which all 27 of the rocket’s Merlin 1D engines will be briefly ignited.

If the routine test goes as planned, SpaceX’s third completed Falcon Heavy will be ready to lift off as early as 11:30 pm ET (03:30 UTC), June 24th. Atop the massive rocket will be the US Air Force’s Space Test Program-2 (STP-2) mission, a collection of 24 small satellites from a variety of US government agencies and academic institutions. Practically speaking, STP is often more of an engineered excuse to launch, involving satellites and customers that are willing to accept higher risk than more valuable payloads, making it far easier for the US military to certify new technologies and new commercial launch vehicles.

As previously discussed on Teslarati, STP-2 is an extremely ambitious mission that aims to simultaneously certify or pave the way towards certification of critical capabilities. First and foremost, it will (barring serious anomalies) give the US military the data it needs to certify SpaceX’s Falcon Heavy rocket for all national defense launches, giving ULA’s Delta IV Heavy its first real competition in a decade and a half.

Each of those three rocket nozzles is roughly 2.5m (8 feet) across, plenty of room for all but the tallest humans to stand up in.

Included under the umbrella of that catch-all certification is a sort of torture-test validation of the long-coast capabilities of SpaceX’s Falcon upper stage. To successfully complete STP-2, the upper stage will be subjected to “four separate upper-stage engine burns, three separate deployment orbits, a final propulsive passivation maneuver, and a total mission duration of over six hours.” It will likely be SpaceX’s most technically-challenging launch ever.

Finally, the US Air Force has decided that STP-2 presents an excellent opportunity to begin the process of certifying flight-proven SpaceX rockets for military launches. The STP-2-related work is more of a preliminary effort for the USAF to actually figure out how to certify flight-proven commercial rockets, but it will still be the first time the a dedicated US military mission has flown on a flight-proven launch vehicle. Down the road, the processes set in place thanks – in part – to STP-2 and Falcon Heavy may also apply to aspirational rockets like Blue Origin’s New Glenn and ULA’s “SMART” concept for Vulcan reuse.

Still, New Glenn is unlikely to be ready for flight-proven military launches until the mid-2020s, while ULA has no plans to even attempt to implement Vulcan’s “SMART” reuse until ~2026, meaning that military certification probably wont come until 2028-2030 at the earliest. SpaceX has thus earned roughly half a decade where it will be the only viable US launch provider that can offer certified flight-proven hardware with an established record of reliability. Although the Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) had a lone smallsat aboard SpaceX’s February 2019 launch of PSN-6 and Spaceflight’s GTO-1 mission, STP-2 will be the first time a dedicated Department of Defense mission has flown on flight-proven launch vehicle hardware since 1992 (STS-53).

Aside from flight-proven Falcon Heavy side boosters B1052 and B1053, STP-2 is expected to use a new center core, B1057. SpaceX is in the late stages of vehicle integration and should be nearly complete by Monday, June 17th in order to support a June 18th static fire. The specific static fire window is not yet public but Falcon Heavy will likely roll out to Pad 39A no less than 12 hours before.

Tesla Model S P100D up for grabs in Dream Giveaway’s first EV prize, June 25 deadline


Dream Giveaway, just as the company’s name suggests, is in the business of giving away vehicles that one would classify as a “dream car.” Starting with two Chevrolet Corvettes in 2008, the Florida-based organization has expanded its national sweepstakes initiative over the year. By popular demand, the organization has turned its sights on another American muscle car this year: one that boasts 920 lb-ft of torque and a 0-60 mph time of 2.2 seconds – the Tesla Model S P100D.

The world’s fastest production car happens to be Dream Giveaway’s first all-electric vehicle prize, which the company is set to give in July. The last day to enter will be June 25, 2019.

More than an organization that gives away America’s most-desired vehicles, Dream Giveaway also supports several humanitarian causes. Tesla Model 3 performance duels Dodge Viper GTS in multiple rolling races


A Tesla Model 3 Performance recently challenged one of America’s most iconic muscle cars, a 2001 Dodge Viper GTS with a fully-built engine. The Dodge Viper holds an esteemed and notorious place among muscle cars, mainly due to its reputation as a racecar for the streets.

Tesla Model 3 owner and car enthusiast DamienG Videos! of YouTube previously tested his 1997 Viper against his all-electric sedan from Silicon Valley. In his previous test, which could be accessed here, the Model 3 proved dominant, walking all over his Viper during multiple rolling races. So impressed was the auto enthusiast (and so strong was the reaction from the Viper community) that he issued an invitation to other Vipers that may be interested in racing his electric car.

It did not take long before a Viper owner took up the offer. This time around, the vehicle was a yellow 2001 Dodge Viper GTS with a fully-built motor. The muscle car has not been tested on a dyno, but the owner of the car noted that the vehicle had at least 500+ whp. This makes the muscle car very impressive, considering that a stock version of the 2001 Dodge Viper GTS features a bold 450 horsepower V-10 engine, which allowed it to hit 60 mph in just 4 seconds flat.

The vehicle’s racecar DNA is also evident in its credentials, as shown by the car’s race-modified siblings: three consecutive European FIA GT-2 championships, two consecutive class championships at the 24 Hours of Le Mans, the inaugural American Le Mans championship, as well as a historic overall championship at the 2000 24 Hours of Daytona. The vehicle, which performed very well both on and off track, was well-received by the US auto community, though it also got a reputation for being a dangerous car to drive.

In a way, the Dodge Viper could be considered the very antithesis of the Tesla Model 3 Performance. While the Viper is loud, the Model 3 is stealthy. While the Dodge has a penchant for being a deadly machine in the hands of inexperienced drivers, the Tesla proudly stands as one of the safest vehicles on the road. While these two vehicles do have their differences, the Viper and Model 3 Performance also have similarities. After all, they are both insanely fast cars.

The Model 3 Performance is equipped with dual motors that produce a combined 450 hp and 471 lb-ft of torque. This allows the vehicle to accelerate from 0-60 mph in just 3.2 seconds. The electric car is also equipped with a dedicated Track Mode feature, making it the only vehicle in Tesla’s lineup that is made to be driven in a closed circuit.

Similar to the first test involving a 1997 Dodge Viper, the Model 3 owner opted to do a series of rolling races. This levels the playing field for the Viper somewhat as both cars are already moving at a steady pace before the race even begins. As the Model 3 Performance and the 2001 Dodge Viper GTS went head to head in multiple rolling races, it became evident that the results would be quite similar as before. The Model 3 dominated the Viper GTS, and it was only until both vehicles started at 60 mph that the Detroit-made muscle car was able to overtake the Silicon Valley-made electric car.

The Tesla Model 3 Performance, while essentially being a computer on wheels, has the makings and spirit of a classic American muscle car. It has a lot of torque, it accelerates impressively, and its handling is top-notch. This combination of strengths, together with its capability to get improved through over-the-air updates, has allowed the electric sedan to outrun vehicles like the Dodge Demon and the Ferrari 458 on the 1/8-mile.

First Tesla Model 3 right-hand drive deliveries underway in the UK


If recent sightings are any indication, Tesla Model 3 right-hand drive (RHD) variants will soon be in the hands of anxiously awaiting customers in the UK.

A recent photo posted to the Tesla Motors Club forum, later shared on Twitter, revealed a semi truck transporter loaded with Model 3 RHD cargo on a highway headed towards London. The two visible all-electric midsize sedans in the the first image were Red Multi-Coat, sporting white interiors and carbon spoilers already installed. A second photo of another delivery hauler shared later revealed a mix of black and Deep Blue Metallic Model 3 vehicles, notably without Aero Wheel covers attached.

Further evidence that the Model 3 cargo en route to London is intended for customers, not simply show rooms for test drives, comes in the form of text messages from Tesla that several local customers have reported receiving. As revealed on Tesla Motors Club (TMC), the messages read as follows:

Congratulations, you will be among the first to take delivery of Model 3 in the UK. Your delivery is scheduled for 20/6 14:00 in London, Heathrow. We will contact you shortly to confirm the final details. Please log in towww.tesla.com/teslaaccount to complete your delivery profile as soon as possible.

If the Model 3 cargo in the recent photos isn’t intended for initial customer deliveries after all, several shipments are reportedly arriving in the UK soon specifically for the purpose. One reservation holder and TMC member detailed a call received from Tesla which provided upcoming shipment information. Specifically, out of 1,000 cars on the cargo ship Grand Mark, 150 of them are Model 3 RHD set for delivery at the end of June. Grand Mark is estimated to arrive in the Port of Zeebrugge, Belgium on June 19th, according to MarineTraffic.com. Following that shiment are two other ships with 2,000 RHD cars each set for deliveries in July and August, per the call from Tesla.

Tesla also reportedly shared certain criteria the company is using to determine the order in which customers will take delivery. First is customers’ place in the order queue, second are the specifications of the cars as ordered (assumingly the more popular/standard packages will be first), and third, the detail completion on customer account pages.

Tesla originally debuted the Model 3 (left-hand-drive) in the UK in July 2018 at the Goodwood Festival of Speed, making impending RHD deliveries a long time coming for prospective customers. An RHD variant was first spotted on a California highway near Tesla’s Fremont factory back in March, which was shortly after VINs identifying that particular driving position indicated the cars had been recently built. The Model 3 online configurator for UK customers opened on May 1, as promised by CEO Elon Musk.

Delivery logistics will obviously be the next challenge for Tesla since large shipments to the UK are now underway. The experience the all-electric car maker has gained over the last few months, especially in China where Tesla’s service teams were working around the clock to deliver vehicles, will hopefully ensure a fairly smooth hand over process for all RHD customers.

Tesla Model 3 Performance tries to overheat in high speed Autobahn test, aces it instead


Tesla owner and longtime electric car advocate Bjorn Nyland recently took his Model 3 Performance to the Autobahn in order to test the vehicle’s limits in sustained high-speed driving. More specifically, the Tesla enthusiast wanted to see if his Model 3 will overheat when it’s being floored for miles on end. The results of the test, to say the least, were incredibly surprising and impressive.

Bjorn Nyland has a lot of experience with Teslas, having owned both a Model S and a Model X. He is also known for pushing his vehicles beyond their expected capabilities, as shown in his winter off-roading sessions with his all-electric SUV. Being a longtime Tesla owner, Nyland is familiar with how the Model S and Model X reduce their power after a while during spirited driving sessions. Thus, for his recent video, he wanted to see if his Model 3 Performance had the same limitations.

It did not take long for the Tesla owner to notice that his all-electric sedan was behaving in a different manner compared to his previous vehicles. The Model 3 Performance proved incredibly resilient, largely maintaining speeds above 120 mph (200 km/h) without any issues. The car also had no problems hitting speeds beyond 140 mph (230 km/h). What really surprised the Tesla owner was that the Model 3 did not overheat at all. There were times when the Model 3 Performance seemed to be limiting its speed to around 120 mph, but after a few moments, the vehicle was ready to hit top speed once more.  

The Model 3 Performance might not be equipped with the gut-wrenching acceleration of its larger sibling, the Model S and Model X Performance, but the electric sedan does have its unique attributes. The vehicle, for one, is Tesla’s only track-capable car in its current lineup, with the Performance variant even getting a dedicated “Track Mode,” which helps the all-electric sedan maintain its optimum performance during closed circuit driving. Tests of the Model 3 Performance with Track Mode have shown that the vehicle can outdo high-performance cars such as the BMW M3 around the track.

These capabilities might soon be rolled out to the Model S and Model X, as well, if recent rumors are any indication. According to a recent leak from a reported insider from Tesla, the electric car maker is working on an update for the Model S and Model X, which will give the vehicles increased performance and more range. The “refreshed” electric vehicles will reportedly be adopting a new cooling system for their batteries and motors too, which could potentially open the doors to even more extended periods of high-speed driving, minus any overheating tendencies.

Tesla (TSLA) bull maintains $500 price target amid ‘overblown’ demand worries


When Tesla (NASDAQ:TSLA) Chair Robyn Denholm addressed the attendees of the recently-held Annual Shareholder Meeting, she expressed her thanks at the courage of the company’s investors. “You need to have a certain amount of intestinal fortitude as an investor, and you have that in spades,” she said. Denholm’s comments are in relation to Tesla’s stock being incredibly volatile, partly thanks to the negative narrative surrounding the company.

Among these is the pervading TSLA bear thesis which claims that demand for the Tesla’s electric cars such as the Model 3 is getting soft. This sentiment, at least according to Berenberg analyst Alexander Haissl, has been overblown.

In a recent note, Haissl argued that the negative sentiment that surrounds Tesla today is “decoupled from reality,” adding that the market seems to be failing to understand the electric car maker’s “technological and cost advantage.” Haissl proved optimistic on his note, giving TSLA stock a price target of $500 per share, which implies an over 100% upside within the next year.

“We maintain our bullish view on Tesla and see no reason to walk away from our price target of $500. Demand worries are overblown, as the Q1 volume weakness was largely self-inflicted by logistic problems, uncertainty about store closures and changing pricing structure, and not indicative of the underlying demand situation.

“Q1 weakness does not change our positive fundamental view, as it is not indicative of the underlying strength of the business,” he wrote. “The demand debate is likely to remain an ‘on paper’ battlefield between bulls/bears and will only be resolved once hard facts are reported, as management is given little credibility for any reassuring commentary,” the Berenberg analyst wrote.

Haissl’s price target for TSLA stock is roughly 110% higher than the median forecasts of Wall Street analysts, which currently stand at $238 per share. Nevertheless, the Berenberg analyst is not alone on his sentiments, as Tesla has also received support from Roth Capital Partners analyst Craig Irwin, who recently upgraded TSLA stock from a “Neutral” to a “Buy.” Baird analyst Ben Kallo, a longtime TSLA bull, recently maintained an optimistic $340 price target on Tesla shares, citing the “overly negative” narrative and bear arguments that could be disproven in the “coming weeks and months.”

As of writing, Tesla stock is trading -1.01% at $211.75 per share.

Tesla Sentry Mode captures man seemingly trying to cause a Model 3 accident


Recent footage from a Tesla owner in Flesland, Norway has revealed a rather shocking video of a man seemingly trying to cause a Model 3 accident. The video, which was recorded through the electric sedan’s Sentry Mode feature, showed the man deliberately removing the nuts on the Model 3’s rear wheels, which could have resulted in the vehicle’s wheels falling off during driving.

In a post on Norway-based Tesla-themed Facebook group Teslanytt, Kees Ihlhaug‎, the vehicle’s owner, noted that the incident happened earlier this week at a parking lot in Lilandsveien, near Bergen Airport at Flesland. After driving his Tesla for about 10 meters, Ihlhaug‎ noticed that his car was behaving strangely. Upon checking his Model 3’s wheels, he found that all but one nut on each of his vehicle’s rear wheels have been taken off. The last nut on each wheel was loosened considerably as well, and it would have easily fallen off had the Tesla owner driven his Model 3 a bit further.

Ihlhaug‎ promptly called a local tire company that fortunately was able to help him out. With new nuts on his vehicle’s wheels, the Model 3 owner was able to drive away safely. When he checked the footage from his electric sedan’s Sentry Mode feature, he was rather shocked to see a man, face hidden with a mask, deliberately removing his Model 3’s rear wheel nuts. Based on the video, it appears that after Sentry Mode was activated midway through the incident, the perpetrator fled the scene.

Footage of the incident was turned over to the police. Unfortunately, the man’s face was covered, making it challenging to identify the perpetrator. There were no security cameras in the parking lot where Ihlhaug‎ left his Model 3 as well. Speaking to local news agency NRK, Section leader Kristine Pettersen at Bergen South Police District noted that the incident could have resulted in something very dangerous. “It is serious when someone bumps with the wheels of a car. It is, of course, not safe to drive when four out of five nuts are off. The damage potential is great if the driver had not been vigilant,” she said.

While the man’s motivations behind his actions remain unclear, and while Ihlhaug‎ himself noted that the person might have simply wanted to steal his wheels (his Model 3 is equipped with aftermarket rims), the fact that the man seemingly opted to leave one nut on each rear wheel suggests that the perpetrator’s motivations might have been more sinister. The man did not use any tools to lift and support the vehicle, for one, which would have made removing the Model 3’s wheels very difficult. Thus, as unfortunate as it may seem, it appears that the perpetrator might have been deliberately attempting to cause the Model 3 to crash.

An extensive look into the treatment of Tesla owners in Norway by NRK late last year has revealed that some of the electric vehicles are seeing some harsh treatment on the road. According to Tom Alfred, a longtime driver and Model X owner, Teslas and other electric cars are starting to attract aggressive drivers. Citing an EV-centric Facebook group that he interacts with, Alfred told the publication that critics had dubbed Tesla and EV owners as “lowest ranking social parasites,” and “spammers who are sponsored by us who drive diesel cars,” among others.

Alfred has noted that these sentiments are spilling over to how he is being treated on the road. “It has become more difficult to merge. I often lie behind other cars. And I have experienced traffic-dangerous situations I have never experienced before. It may be just something I feel about, since I know what kind of prejudice people have. Or it’s because I have a Tesla,” he said. The Model X owner noted that due to these experiences, he has begun avoiding talking about his car in social gatherings. “I still hold a lower profile now than before. I’m trying to avoid talking about having a Tesla,” he said.

SpaceX CEO Elon Musk hints at Starlink’s global reach at Tesla shareholder event


Speaking at Tesla’s annual shareholder meeting, CEO Elon Musk – also CEO of SpaceX – briefly segued to his spaceflight company’s ambitious Starlink program and discussed how he believes the satellite constellation can support no more than 3-5% of the global population.

On May 23rd, SpaceX successfully launched 60 “v0.9” Starlink satellites – weighing as much as 18.5 tons (~41,000 lb) – into LEO, a first step unmatched in ambition in the history of commercial satellites. Delivered to an orbit of ~450 km (280 mi), all but four of the 60 spacecraft have managed to successfully power up their electric ion thrusters and 55 have already raised their orbits to ~500 km (310 mi). For what is effectively a technology/partial-prototype demonstration mission, the record of Starlink v0.9 performance is extremely impressive and bodes well for a quick and relatively easy design optimization (to “v1.0”) before true mass production can begin.

In general, Musk was more than willing to acknowledge some of the potential limitations of a Low Earth Orbit (LEO) broadband satellite constellation at Tesla’s 2019 shareholder meeting. Most notably, he bluntly noted that Starlink is not designed to service densely populated areas and will predominately be focused on low to medium-density populaces. Triggered by an investor’s question about the possibility of integrating Starlink into future Tesla cars, Musk reiterated that SpaceX’s first-generation Starlink user terminals (i.e. ground antennas) will be roughly the size of a “medium pizza”.

Although pizza sizing is not exactly ISO-certified, Starlink’s user antennas will presumably be around 12-14 inches (30-36 cm) wide and come in a square form factor. Thanks to the use of what Musk believes are the most advanced phased array antennas in the world, neither the antennas on Starlink satellites or user terminals will need to physically move to maintain a strong signal. Still, as Musk notes, an antenna the size of medium pizza box would still stick out like a sore thumb on the typically all-glass roof of an of Tesla’s consumer cars, although built-in Starlink antennas might actually make sense on Tesla Semis.

Elon Musk’s specific comment indicated that Starlink – at least in its current iteration – was never meant to serve more than “3-5%” of Earth (population: ~7.8 billion), with most or all of its users nominally located in areas with low to medium population densities. This generally confirms technical suspicions that Starlink (and other constellations like OneWeb and Telesat) is not really capable of providing internet to everyone per se.

For SpaceX, each Starlink satellite – per official statements that the first 60 satellites represent more than 1 terabit of bandwidth – likely offers bandwidth of roughly 17-20 gigabits per second. In simpler terms, this means that one Starlink satellite overhead could theoretically support as many as 4000 users simultaneously streaming YouTube videos at 1080p/30fps, a figure that sounds impressive but glosses over the sheer number of people that live in cities. Importantly, every single Starlink satellite at ~550 km will likely have a service radius of several thousand – if not tens of thousands of – square kilometers.

Even though the US is exceptionally large and spread out relative to most other countries, a single square kilometer of New York City, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Boston, Miami, Seattle, or dozens of other cities could effortlessly saturate a Starlink satellite’s bandwidth. Even the smallest of towns and cities could easily use most or all of ~20 Gbps at peak hours. In short, Starlink is going to be extremely bandwidth-constrained. Even if SpaceX can double or triple each satellite’s bandwidth and have 10-100 satellites overhead and capable of delivering internet at any given moment, it’s hard to imagine that Starlink will ever be able to serve every person that falls under its coverage area.

Additionally, this means that there is a strong chance that Starlink internet customers will be subject to relatively strict bandwidth limitations and throttling at peak hours. Thankfully, these limitations will be made entirely out of technical necessity, standing in stark contrast to the arbitrary, greed-motivated carriers and ISPs Americans are almost universally accustomed to. In an absolute worst-case scenario, Starlink’s already-connected US customers would get roughly the same quality of service they are used to at roughly the same price. However, they would be able to rest assured that their money was going to SpaceX instead of filling the pockets of the robber-baron-esque shareholders and executives that run American ISPs.

Ultimately, the estimates provided above are exceptionally conservative and generally assume worst-case scenarios. SpaceX could very well beat expectations and develop unique and innovative ways of efficiently using its available bandwidth, while also tirelessly working to improve its technology and expand the carrying capacity of newer satellites. In general, CEO Elon Musk’s comments serve as an excellent temper to the hype surrounding Starlink. SpaceX isn’t going to initially be breaking the backs of Comcast or Time Warner but there’s no reason to believe that that day will never come.
