During the question-and-answer portion of The Boring Company’s information session in Los Angeles, CA, Elon Musk revealed that Not-a-Flamethrower deliveries would start within the next two weeks. What’s more, the portable firestarters will be delivered by SpaceX employees driving Boring Company vans.
Musk admitted that the delivery and shipment of the Not-a-Flamethrowers had been delayed. According to Musk, The Boring Co. encountered some challenges, since shipping items with propane turned out to be a tricky affair. Musk and SpaceX engineer Steve Davis, however, noted that the tunneling startup had come up with a solution.
“We have a solution — custom delivery to your house or business; with a Boring Company delivery van. Yeah, we’re just gonna get some vans and some people and deliver it to you,” Musk said.
Amidst laughs from the audience, Davis lightly noted that he, together with other employees, would be the ones doing the deliveries.
“Me and Jen (a Boring Co. employee) are gonna show up in your house. This is true; with a flamethrower, I mean, Not-a-Flamethrower,” Davis said.
Musk provided a timeline as to when reservation holders for the device should expect their Not-a-Flamethrowers.
“We’re starting deliveries in two weeks,” Musk said
The Boring Company Flamethrower, later named Not-a-Flamethrower due to issues with customs agencies, raised $10 million for the tunneling startup. Production of the fiery devices was limited to only 20,000 units, with each selling for $500. The Not-a-Flamethrowers sold out within four days.
Prior to Musk’s announcement, there were signs that the deliveries of the Boring Company Not-a-Flamethrower will begin soon. Just recently, reservation holders for the Not-a-Flamethrower began sharing screenshots of the device’s terms and conditions. In classic Boring Company style, the terms and conditions for the Not-a-Flamethrower were equal parts witty and unorthodox. There’s even a safety pledge included, which was written in the form of an intentionally mediocre limerick.
I will not use this in a house
I will not point this at my spouse
I will not use this in an unsafe way
The best use is creme brulee…
… and that exhausts our rhyming ability.
The terms and conditions also noted that The Boring Company would not be responsible for anything “genius or stupid” that owners of the Not-a-Flamethrowers might do. Among these are “smoking near the not-a-flamethrower,” “setting things on fire,” and “showing off to my friends and romantic interests.”
After Musk’s announcement that the device will be called “Not-a-Flamethrower,” he also stated that each order would come packaged with a free Boring Company fire extinguisher, as well as a unique serial number.
Despite its cool appearance, The Boring Company Not-a-Flamethrower is actually more of a low-powered propane torch, similar to the Weed Dragon, a device that can be purchased at any local hardware store. The high-profile nature of the devices resulted in some controversies nonetheless, however, with California assemblyman Miguel Santiago (D-Los Angeles) expressing outrage at Musk’s portable firestarters.
