Beim Laden an einem Supercharger in Belgien ist an diesem Wochenende ein Model S von Tesla in Brand geraten und zerstört worden. Auch der Supercharger, an dem es angeschlossen war, wurde von den Flammen beschädigt. Wie belgische Medien meldeten, konnte der Brand nach Eintreffen der Feuerwehr rasch gelöscht werden. Laut der Website des Fernsehsender VRT hatten die Besitzer des Autos bereits vor der Abfahrt in den Niederlanden einen Brandgeruch wahrgenommen.
Nach den Berichten hatte der Tesla-Fahrer sein Auto am Samstagabend zum Aufladen an der Supercharger-Station Antwerpen abgestellt. Als er wenig später zurückkehrte, waren das Auto und die Ladestation in Brand. Er rief die Feuerwehr, die das Feuer laut den belgischen Medien rasch unter Kontrolle brachte. Dazu versenkte sie das Model S für den Rest der Nacht in einem Container voll Wasser. Diese Technik wird von manchen Feuerwehren neuerdings bei Elektroautos angewendet, um ein Wiederaufflammen nach dem Löschen auszuschließen.

Bereits im Jahr 2016 hatte ein Model S in Norwegen an einem Supercharger Feuer gefangen und war ausgebrannt. In den vergangenen zwei Monaten gab es zudem vier Fälle von Model S, die anscheinend ohne äußere Einwirkung in Brand gerieten. Tesla hatte daraufhin „als reine Vorsichtsmaßnahme“ eine neue Batteriemanagement-Software angekündigt. Brände von Elektroautos seien extrem selten, allerdings wolle man eine Zahl von null Fällen dieser Art anstreben, erklärte das Unternehmen.
Zu den näheren Umständen des Falls in Belgien wurde zunächst nicht bekannt. Nach einem Bericht des Senders VRT hatte die Fahrt des verbrannten Model S in den Niederlanden begonnen, wo die Besitzer bereits einen Brandgeruch festgestellt hätten; eine Quelle für diese Angabe wurde jedoch nicht genannt. In anderen Berichten ist sie nicht enthalten.
